One non-game related note that I got last night. Did anyone else think this? Glen Mason sure doesn't seem to harbor any ill-will towards MN. He is almost over the top nice about the program. It's kinda weird. The whole game I was waiting for it but it never came.

Jeff he's been like this ever since he left, still lives in Minn and goes to watch practice now and then

Leidner was ok, really will need to smooth out some things tho.

We need better than "OK" out of Leidner. This is his 3rd year in the program with 4 starts under his belt. It felt a lot like watching Nelson last year.....around 50% completion pct and 100-150 yards passing each game. These easier teams are where we need to work on improving the passing game and I'm not sure we did that last night. Also, some injuries on the Dline, we will see how those end up.

Many good things though, especially getting the W.

Agree that Leidner needs to be better. But I keep on wondering now how much of it has to do with the remarkably vanilla passing scheme. Would opening up the playbook give him more confidence to read defenses and make decisions? Admittedly, it could also lead to worse decisions and less confidence, but watching multiple QBs look incompetent for the last few years has me wondering...

I get the idea that Kill just wants to power run and just throw to get defense off balance. That's why Nelson wanted out.

Btw ... I keep hearing everyone say that we should be 4-0 heading to Ann Arbor
Is that wise with TCU in there? On the road?
Good test, if nothing else

"Should". The talk around here is that even when they were good/great, it was because they played a bunch of crap teams all the time.

Thanks Fargo, didn't know that. Looking back at it, he was one of the better coaches we've ever had. He just never got over that proverbial hump. I wonder what he could have done with the facilities we have now?

TCU is no joke. I'm pretty sure that Vegas will peg us as at least a TD dog in that game. Not saying we can't win it, but I'm with you..... Going down there and pulling off a win would be a big step in the right direction.

As for the game last night, I too was disappointed in the offense. Leidner hopefully was really jacked up and will improve. Even his TD pass to Jones was about a foot away from being a pick 6 the other way. To even match the 8 wins of last year, I believe we will need much more production out of the QB position. I think Leidner can do it, but last night hopefully will be one of his worst games of the season.

Defense looked outstanding!! I just love the way that Kill's defensive staff coaches. Very aggressive with blitzes, sure tackling, secondary usually close to the ball, and good pursuit all over the field.

Excellent point drew
Its the coaching philosophy that makes me feel better than ever on defense.
Better athletes for sure on that side of the ball. Use em. Let em loose.

TCU is picked to finish 7th in their conference. Nobody should look at them as a sure win like the other teams in the preseason schedule, but TCU is a very winnable game even on the road.

Mason is pretty much an unabashed Jerry Kill fan. He pretty much loves every aspect Kill's approach from his philosophy on building, to how recruits, how he coaches and how he disciplines.

I think the 3 easy late TD's took a lot of the luster off the performance. B is about as good as they deserved for that.

Certainly no higher than B overall. The team they were playing seemed determined to hand Minnesota the game - not once but twice botching a shotgun snap, one resulting in an 18 yard drive killing loss, the other a turnover deep in their own territory. Blocked punt for a TD, another punt that looked like a 5th grader in the P.P and K. competition. Dumb penalties, on and on.

To the Gophers credit, they were handed a win and gladly took it. No need to apologize for that. One team made mistakes, the other team didn't. They played OK but it seemed mostly like a continuation of last year. I'd like to see the passing game stepped up this year, but that didn't really materialize. Leidner looked OK. Poised, made good decisions. But I want to see him clicking with the receivers more this year.

Most fun was seeing Berkeley Edwards off and running with 2 TD's. That long run especially was very nice the way he broke it to the outside and turned on the jets AD style.

Last year they had sloppy moments in non conference also and played better football once the Big 10 Season started

Fair question, although Leidner did admit to some nerves after the game.

Can't recall what game it was last year, but late in the game the offense needed a few first downs to run out the clock. Instead of the typical Gophers (or Vikings, for that matter) strategy of running it up the gut into a wall, they called several pass gutsy pass plays that got the first downs (can't recall if it was Nelson or Leidner behind center).

Long story short: I have some faith in the coaching staff on this front (although they have to keep proving it).
