By landing them is the first step to getting your program established is all I'm saying.

And no it will not be easy. Pitino has to sell them on his vision.

I know what you're saying Bill. The problem is that while Pitino is selling is vision and un-built new practice facility to Gary Trent Jr., Coach K. is in here selling selling multiple national championships and tons of NBA 1st round draft choices produced, including fellow in state product Tyus Jones. That's why Pitino has to find talent where ever he can find it. Increase the talent and achieve some success. That's when the top recruits start listening to Pitino's vision.

Yeap, very true. His last name may be "Pitino" but he's going to have to earn it. It pains me to say but MN BBall doesn't carry enough weight on it's own to grab local studs. Kids from the burbs/city may grow up dreaming of playing Gopher Hockey but not BBall.....Yet.

The Lizard King Bo Ryan announces he's back in for one last year.
Will then go full-time into corny, awful commercials, apparently.

Sources say that the #Gophers are one of the schools under consideration for St. John's big man transfer Chris Obekpa.

So does Bo Ryan's pending retirement mean recruits may look more favorably at other schools, since they won't know what the coaching situation will be like in Wisconsin one year into their college career?

Ryan pretty much said in his statement today that his long-time assistant WILL be getting the job ... Must be a promised plan.

Pitino needs to focus on recruiting some kids that can put the ball thru the hole.

At times, it was almost painful to watch how offensively challenged we are.

Following his recent official visit to Creighton, Shamorie Ponds has two more official visits slated and could then make a decision.

The 6-foot-2 Brooklyn (N.Y.) Thomas Jefferson guard will visit St. John’s officially Aug. 28-30 and then Minnesota Sept. 18-20.

“He’s going to take those two and make his decision,” Jefferson coach Lawrence “Bud” Pollard told SNY.tv on Wednesday.

Ponds was a guest on The 4 Quarters Podcast Wednesday and said his visit to Creighton was excellent.

He recently cut his list to four schools — St. John’s, Minnesota, Creighton and Providence — but Pollard said no visit to Providence has been set because he hasn’t spoken with the head coach.

So for now, Ponds will play in the Big Strick Classic on Saturday at the Gauchos Gym and then plan for his St. John’s visit.

Pollard said it’s possible Ponds could pull the trigger on or after that visit and forego the Minnesota visit.

“Unless St. John’s knocks his socks off to the point where he doesn’t take that visit,” Pollard said. “If St. John’s knocks his socks off you never know. You never could say never.”

Ponds averaged 25 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists last season and had two 40-point games and 11 30-point games.

Very quietly..........

Former Gophers basketball player Daquein McNeil pleaded guilty Monday to assaulting his girlfriend, though he will serve no jail time for the November incident.

McNeil, a sophomore guard for the Gophers at the time of his arrest, reached a plea agreement Monday shortly before his jury trial was set to begin. The deal, which is pending judge approval on Aug. 31, includes three years of probation, domestic abuse counseling and a stay of imposition, which would lower his felony to a misdemeanor if he doesn’t violate his probation.

At his August sentencing, a judge will determine the type of anger management and abuse counseling McNeil will attend, said public defender Bryan Leary, McNeil’s attorney.

McNeil was expected to plead not guilty to third-degree assault and domestic assault by strangulation, but a deal was reached after prosecutors revealed that McNeil made
50 to 60 phone calls to the victim while he was in jail, which violated his no-contact order. However, the girlfriend was receptive to contact and posted his bail last December.

As part of the plea agreement, the domestic assault charge was dismissed, Leary said.

According to court documents, McNeil choked and whipped his girlfriend of 10 months.

McNeil will stay in Hennepin County Jail until his sentencing hearing on Aug. 31, but he will face no further jail time for the incident.

He has been in jail since June 26 after he was arrested for living with his girlfriend, violating his no-contact order.

Under the terms of his release, McNeil wasn’t allowed to contact the victim directly or through a third party or be near her home. He also had to avoid further criminal charges, among other stipulations.

McNeil was suspended from the basketball team in December following the charges and was dismissed in January after he failed to register for spring semester classes.

Had McNeil been convicted of both crimes, he could have faced up to eight years in prison with a fine of up to $15,000, but Leary said he will not face either.

According to the Pioneer Press Amir Coffey is expected to commit to the Gophers this afternoon. If true, this is a huge recruiting win for Pitino.

This really is huge for Pitino. It's the in state recruiting victory of a prominent recruit that he badly needed.

From Daily Gopher:

The Coffey name is a familiar to Gopher fans. Richard Coffey dominate the paint around the Big Ten from 1987-90, twice earning Honorable Mention All-Big Ten and finishing his career with the third most rebounds in Gopher history, behind a couple guys by the name of Mychal Thompson and Kevin McHale. The elder Coffey was a senior on the Gopher's 1990 team that made a run to the Elite Eight before losing to Georgia Tech. I take this turn down memory lane just briefly before turning back to the point of today's article.

Amir Coffey is the son of the former Gopher Great and this afternoon he gave his verbal commitment to Richard Pitino to continue the legacy and play his career on the Williams Arena floor as well. Amir is one of the best high school seniors in the country and is the highest rated recruit to commit to Pitino over his few years at Minnesota.

Scout.com's Evan Daniels spoke with Coffey Sunday evening to understand why the top-rated guard decided to stay in Minnesota.

quote:

"The biggest reason was I was wanted to stay home and represent the city," Coffey told Scout. "After the visit I just felt like the bond that I had with the coaches and players, it just felt like I was supposed to be there."

At one point Coffey was a consensus top-25 caliber player, receiving the coveted four-stars and realistically pushing for a fifth. But an ACL tear early in his junior season forced Coffey off the court for several months and caused many of the blue-chip programs to slow down their recruitment of the young man. Minnesota, and others, did not slow down their recruitment and those efforts paid off today landing an immediate impact player.

In spite of the season off Coffey still holds four-stars and is a consensus top-50 player nationally. Offers and serious consideration was given to Texas, Marquette, Iowa State, Wisconsin and Michigan State (the latter two not considered as serious of a threat to the Gophers in this instance).

What does Coffey Bring

Heights: 6'7"
Weight: 195
Stars: 4

He brings the swagger of an elite, local recruit who decided to stay home and help build Gopher basketball into a Big Ten contender. This plays well to the local media and it is something that gets noticed by other local players. But what about on the court? Coffey brings the body, length and athleticism of a small forward with the shooting, passing ability and handles of a guard. This fits very well into what is being built here by Pitino and staff. Coffey gives him another ball-handler, a very good shooter in a 6-7 body that will be a size mismatch at SG or even at point if he were to get some minutes there.

This from his ESPN scouting report...

quote:

Coffey is a long, lean and smooth lefty that has excellent feel and skill not to mention an excellent basketball IQ. He has a nice handle and is a terrific passer with matching court vision especially in the open court where he throws lob passes on time and on target. He makes plays off the dribble in the half court he creates help with his ability to penetrate to drop off or kick out to an open teammate. Coffey can also knock the open three when his feet are set and he also can hit the pull up or floater with excellent touch and body control.

A very talented player who has a tremendous work ethic, all signs point to him being a difference maker in the Big Ten.

And the frosting on the cake is that Pitino kept him away from Bo Ryan. That's a twofer in my book.
