Mavs block a punt, and it goes out inside the SMSU 5 yd line. They follow that up with another TD. Now 37-0 with 5:05 left in the 3rd. Mavs score 21 unanswered points in about 4 mins. Game was close through the first 2+ quarters, but huge shift in momentum by the Mavs has broken this one wide open.

Another blocked punt! Mavs get the ball at the SMSU 1 yd line.

Franklin (true freshman) runs it in for his first TD. Now 44-0, with almost a full quarter left. Mavs have exploded for 28 unanswered points in a little over the last half a quarter.

Mavs score another TD on a long QB keeper. 51-0 with about 11:52 to go.

Mavs have scored 5 unanswered TDs in just over 13 minutes of play. CRAZY!

Nice 38 yd run by SMSU, and with the next run they've got it down to the MSU-Mankato 15 yd line.

Mav's drive stalls, and the backup kicker adds a short FG. Now 54-7 with a little over 3 mins to go.

Mavs get a huge punt return, all the way down to the SMSU 2yd line. Broke the punter's tackle, but it was enough to slow him down for other SMSU players to tackle him before the EZ. MSU-Mankato is now running out the clock at the doorstep.

Mavs move to 8-0. Impressive offensive production and great ST play, but apparent knee injury to starting RB Gunn early in the game could be a major concern for their upcoming match-up with Winona St.

Been wondering when the collapse would hit, looks like it was late in the game tonight
They've been holding it together with twine, figured at some point it would collapse.
Close losses week after week really pile up on that type of athlete's psyche.

BTW, it's Brent, not Brian...

I was only able to catch the 2nd half on the stream, but from what I saw in the drive chart, SMSU hung in the game by limiting MSU-Mankato to just 1 TD in the first half, and forced them to settle for FGs on 3 other drives, plus a fumble recovery and a punt. That led to the 16-0 halftime score. I caught the end of SMSU's opening 3rd quarter drive, and it really looked like they were going to push it in and with a possible 2 pt conversion could have cut it down to a 1 score game. But then the wheels came off.

Mankato stuffed the trick 4th down attempt, and on the very next play they scored on an 89 yd run. That huge momentum shift seemed to be a backbreaker for SMSU, going from a possible 16-8 score to 23-0 instead. The Mav's poured it on with long passes and runs, plus a couple of blocked punts deep in SMSU territory, leading to that 35 pt scoring frenzy in a 13 minute span. The final score could have been worse, as the Mavs had the ball within the 5 yd line 2 more times, but settled for a FG on one, and then ran out the clock on the other to end the game.

One thing MSU-Mankato did well in this game was minimizing penalties. They've been the most penalized team in the conference, but only had 4 for 20 yds in this contest.

Despite the lopsided score, the SMSU QB hung in there and did a good job of avoiding the rush (only 1 sack vs. several escapes). The RB Simmons had a few nice runs too. Overall, the SMSU offense didn't look that bad. On the other hand, the SMSU defense seemed to wear down in the 2nd half which was possibly a side-effect of the lopsided time of possession (Mavs had the ball for 38 mins vs. 22 for the Mustangs). The special teams breakdowns compounded the problems.

Big showdown coming on Saturday with undefeated Winona State visiting undefeated MSU-Mankato. If Winona wins, they all but assure themselves of winning the division since they already have the head-to-head win over Sioux Falls. If MSU-Mankato wins, they put themselves in good shape to win the division, but still have to travel to Sioux Falls for their regular season finale, and losing that match-up could potentially throw it into a 3-way tie. Based on the current season stats, the Mavs (#1 overall offense, #2 overall defense by yards) should have the edge over the Warriors (#6 overall offense, #6 overall defense).

I haven't seen any updates on RB Nate Gunn's knee injury. He only played about a quarter in the SMSU match-up before getting hurt and did not return to that game. The Mavs have some depth at RB, but Gunn has been their top rushing threat, and if he's not able to play, it could be a factor in this game.

I'll actually be in Mankato this weekend, but I doubt I'll be able to attend the game since I'll be helping my parents move.

In the rankings, MSU-Mankato moved up 1 spot in the coaches poll and is now ranked #3 in both the coaches poll and D2 Poll. Winona has climbed to 10th in the coaches and 11th in the D2 poll. Sioux Falls is 14th in the coaches and 13th in the D2 poll. UMD has entered the D2 poll at 24th, but is unranked in the coaches poll.

I see the University of Sioux Falls just joined the NSIC in 2012. Was wondering what the deal was there....I'd never heard of them until recently. Where did they come from?

I'm trying to figure out why UM-Morris is in DIII with a bunch of private schools, while UM-Crookston is in DII with a bunch of sports powerhouses? We strive for great things in Crookston.

I don't know much about Sioux Falls, but here's some info from wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sioux_Falls_Cougars It appears they were previously in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (in NAIA). The NSIC was looking to expand to 16 teams, and that was why they invited other Midwest teams to join the league. Sioux Falls and Minot are the two most recent additions, joining the NSIC in 2012. The NSIC being part of NCAA div 2 is considered to be a more premiere league than which likely was a factor for those teams opting to join.

Some info about the history of schools in the NSIC is available here: http://www.northernsun.org/sports/2011/7/27/NSIC_History.aspx?path=general A few of the teams had moved from the NSIC to the NCC, but then moved back to the NSIC when the NCC was disbanded in 2008.

UM-Crookston does seem outmatched by most other NSIC teams, at least in football. They seem to be fairly competitive in baseball (25-21 record in 2016).

From that wiki article, it seems Sioux Falls was quite a powerhouse in the NAIA with 4 NAIA championships:
quote:

The University of Sioux Falls Cougars football team won the NAIA Division II Football National Championship in 1996, and the NAIA Football National Championship in 2006, 2008 and 2009. All four of USF's national championships have been undefeated seasons. The football program has had four NAIA Players of the Year Award winners, running back Nick Kortan in 2002, quarterback Chad Cavender in 2007, quarterback Lorenzo Brown in 2009 and receiver Jon Ryan in 2010. The program has won 19 conference titles, including 10 in the SDIC (1981, 1984, 1988–1989, 1994–1999) and 9 in the GPAC (2001–2004, 2006–). From 2008–2010 the team sported a 42-game winning streak which tied an NAIA record.

The current head coach is Jed Stugart who replaced alum Kalen DeBoer in 2010. DeBoer led USF to a 67-3 record in his five years with 3 national titles as head coach. Legendary coach Bob Young led the Cougars from 1983– 2004 guiding them to their first national championship in 1996.

Baseball is certainly on the upswing for UM-Crookston.

In 2014 the baseball team had a 1-47 record, while losing 40 in a row to end the season.

2013 wasn't much better. They were 1-42.

Glad to see they're improving in baseball at least. It's good for the league to have some competitive balance. I also tried checking how their women's teams are faring, but it seems many of them are facing challenges as well. The women's tennis haven't won a match since the 2014 season.

Women's hoops went through a lot of tough years. But they've been "OK" in recent years. They even knocked off DI NDSU a couple seasons ago. Granted, it was an awful NDSU team.

Forecast temp for 1pm kickoff is 36 degrees. Generally colder temps seem to favor running teams which might help the Mavs.

MSU-Mankato beat Winona St. 27-6, improving to 9-0. The Mav's defense gave up 122 yds in the first quarter and it looked like it was going to be a nail biter with a 7-6 score at the end of the 1st quarter. However, the Mav's defense awoke, and only allowed 111 yds through the remaining three quarters, as well as shutting out the Warriors for the rest of the game.

There should be a big shake-up when the next D2 rankings come out. NW Missouri State had their 38-game winning streak come to an end, losing 20-10 to unranked Pittsburgh St. NW Missouri has been ranked #1 in D2 since before the season began, and was collecting all 1st place votes in the coaches poll each week. With the loss, NW Missouri will likely tumble several spots, but who will be the new #1 team may be split between the polls. In last week's poll, IUP was ranked 2nd in the D2 poll, but 4th in the coaches poll. Shephard was ranked 2nd in the coaches poll, but 5th in the D2 poll. MSU-Mankato was ranked 3rd in both polls. IUP and Shephard both won, beating unranked opponents. It will be interesting to see if the Mav's victory over the 10th/11th (depending on poll) ranked Warriors will give them a big enough boost to move past either team in the respective poll.
