Here is a good article on Kirk Ciarrocca and his offensive system. Hell of a good coach, who backed out on a head coaching position in the off season to stay here as the OC. I doubt we will get that lucky a second time. I'm sure he will get a much better HC offer in the off season and take it.

Gophers offense is always looking for the next big play
Gophers' sideline glances can be decoys, but one changed call went for a TD.
By Megan Ryan Star Tribune NOVEMBER 14, 2019 — 6:44AM

The Gophers offense is perfectly in sync, as only an offense that tallies at least 28 points in all nine games this year can be.

The players also eerily look to the sideline, perfectly timed with each other, to check every play.

It’s a quirk of offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca’s system, even if the idea itself of switching a call at the line of scrimmage is common.

Audibles are the quarterback’s doing, shouting instructions to his teammates if he thinks the original play call won’t work against the defense’s look. But Gophers signal caller Tanner Morgan said it’s more of a collaboration between him and Ciarrocca, also his position coach.

A perfect example was the Gophers’ first touchdown in the 31-26 upset against then-No. 4 Penn State at TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday. Morgan found receiver Rashod Bateman for a 66-yard score, a six-man offensive line and key block from running back Shannon Brooks paving the way. But that wasn’t the initial plan.

“It was something Coach Ciarrocca saw on film, a specific blitz they had that early on could give us a lot of trouble,” Morgan said. “They disguise it really well, but Coach Ciarrocca noticed one thing that he would know that that was coming, so we just had a check to it, and the original play was a different run or I can’t even remember. But we got the check and hit it big.”

Morgan said Ciarrocca spots the defense from his bird’s eye view in the press box.

“He sees things, obviously, a lot better and more clear than I do,” Morgan said. “… He can see things very quickly. But it’s cool to see for me, personally, kind of knowing what he’s going to check to before we even get there.”

Ciarrocca picks out those subtleties in the film room, a place the coach hardly leaves. Coach P.J. Fleck attested to that, saying Ciarrocca spent the extra bye weekend before the Penn State game alone instead of out recruiting. The result was an “unbelievable” and “flawless” game plan, according to Fleck.

“He’s in his element. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. I’m not sure if he went home,” Fleck said. “… And that’s Kirk. Kirk loves to be by himself. He got more work done than anybody in the entire building, probably for the last six months, by himself.”

Ciarrocca, though, isn’t so keen on revealing what’s on his mastermind, even though many football teams use sideline techniques such as funky whiteboards with random photos — everything from clip art to cartoon characters — to communicate to players on the field.

“If I gave you the answer to that, I might have to get rid of you,” Ciarrocca joked. “… I mean, that’s just what we do. We look to the sideline. On the first touchdown, the kids did a great job executing the details of the play.”

The sideline checks are hard to unsee once noticed. And in that way, they can be a bit of a red herring, messing with opposing players and defensive coordinators.

“People think we check the play all the time, but most of the time, it’s just jibber-jabber,” Ciarrocca said. “We’re really not even doing anything. … One thing I found that in the [Mid-American Conference when at Western Michigan], after it was the third or fourth time they’re playing us, they all started to realize it. We’re really not changing the play as much as people think.”

Except for when they are, to sometimes magnificent success.

The OC is the unsung hero here, imo
Guy just gets it
The wildcat a big part of it as well
Seems to keep defenses off-balanced
We got really lucky he was willing to take this job, no matter how short of a window he stays
Hopefully his assistants are learning how it is done.

The recognition is coming with winning
Morgan is a semi finalist for the big QB award

The OC May be in demand

Imagine they got that extra $$ in the extension to keep this bunch together as long as possible.

Here's what I love about what PJ has done. He got some grief for some of the stuff he's preached since he came here: "Attend class...every class." "Sit in the front two rows of class and wear a collared shirt--and we'll check up on you." "Be elite athletically, academically, socially, and spiritually." "Commit to something bigger than yourself." "Serve and give in the community." Then he goes out and starts randomly drug testing his players, beyond what his league requires; has crazy stuff like teaching his players how to relate to women, how to have date nights, how to do laundry; teaches them random history lessons on Sundays, etc. etc.

And now look. He has (mostly) 3-star athletes who are beating 4- and 5-star talent by being completely disciplined (virtually no penalties), playing smart and focused within a defined offensive and defensive scheme, never giving up on a game or an opportunity, handling business against B1G pushovers, and being relentless under pressure in the game's biggest moments.

Is there a coincidence between the first paragraph above and the second paragraph? Could it be that some of the stuff people mocked has all the while been developing high-character, selfless kids that respond better to adversity and high-pressure situations than less-disciplined, more self-focused (even though more talented) teams? Certainly seems that way to me. And then when I see Minnesota football having its highest GPA ever, completely invested in local hospitals/cancer centers, and having virtually no disciplinary issues after the Claeys fiasco? Yeah, maybe PJ is doing something right WAY beyond football.

Just an excellent post.

Teaching kids manners on how to act beyond the football field really says a lot about Fleck. This is how you form a better culture. Teaching kids to respect women and not letting them think they can be thugs off the field.

If there's some sort of dig going on there towards me about Flecks Charm School, I get it.
Yes, I made the comment it was ridiculous for him to let us all know he was having "which spoon to use for soup" classes, with these guys.
And I'm not backing off on that.
I feel a bunch of you are acting like you hired the guy. We all knew a lot about him before he ever got here. If you are at all on social media, you knew all about PJ Fleck before he showed up on campus.
A young man I work with every day was making me watch his WMU videos daily, years before we ever started looking at him here.
I totally respect the man's principles and his ethics. Have since Day One. But those are things EVERY coach should be expected to insist on. I've coached 30 years.
I'm just saying, I don't walk around every day telling the town that we are straightening out some bad kids. We're COACHING them to be better people.
Glad we've moved on from some that apparently didn't do a great job of it. Fleck (and more importantly his staff) have been doing a great job of it, here, so far.
And in Flecks defense, he is getting ASKED about a lot of his mind games, and that's why we are hearing so much about them. He loves the press, make no mistake.
Lets just enjoy Gopher Football together. And pray we never return to the problems of the past. (in LOTS of U athletic programs)

I wasn’t indoctrinated to Fleck like that so my first impressions were

Just another salesman (like Brewster and Wacker)

He’s apparently cleaned up the program
Good deal

His way isn’t for everyone
No problem

If you’re clean and can’t win then I have no time for it

If you’re dirty and win the same

I’m just happy they’re figuring out how to play compete and win

If they’d lost those early games? I’d be pretty disappointed
They survived
And now are thriving
Hopefully continues

I was very leery as Fleck sounded a lot like Brewster....big difference is he can back up his talk, can recruit, and can coach. Seems to be good to and for the kids too....not much to hate.

The best thing Fleck said is that everyone is focused the team and program can improve. Fleck is able to recruit and/or train coaches as well as players, that is the biggest key. That is very different than Brewster who spewed Rose Bowl from the beginning while he couldn't recruit coaches to help him, couldn't get as good of talent, and mostly couldn't coach.

A big thing is that Fleck is able to recruit IMG Academy now....you grab those two big lineman and Annexstad plus Bateman from Georgia---it sets up great for the future. Get the best state talent and invade those hotbeds.

Once again … some VERY IMPORTANT ones, tho.
But I agree, building classes that will fill the voids graduation leaves.
Not allowing big holes on the program, building each class, each year.

Saw a great interview with Winston DeLattiboudere last night.
Describing the exact day when things turned the corner.
Will try to find it, but talked about how workouts were no longer dreaded, how responsibilities were no longer avoided, he said almost as a whole one day (and it was even an off-season day) … the program changed.
It wasn't about individually trying to get right, it was about being a part of a change headed towards success. Unprecedented success.
He claims they could actually feel it happen.
The great programs get it, and keep it. Lets hope it sticks.
I've started to have some contacts inside these local recently-successful programs, and its very interesting to hear their takes. St Thomas, St Johns, SDSU, NDSU, and now the U.
I guess I'd use the "culture" word. They look for certain types and nourish them.

Yepper 14 Seniors, 16 Juniors, and 46 Freshman or Redshirt Freshman....Those 11 Seniors are the core for Kill/Claeys classes so we will know a lot more about the program in the next 2-3 years.

I think we were all leery of Fleck (including myself) from all the used car salesman and nobodies we've had for HC in the past.

Just catching up. Man, was that fun or what?

I was at Disney with my family last weekend and had to pull rank with the wife & kid to leave the Magic Kingdom for a couple hours to catch the 2nd half. (Needless to say, I wasn't very popular at that point in time...) I won't bore with all the minutiae, but thought I'd at least share the following:

Had my Gopher shirt on all day. During the morning, we encountered what we came to refer to in retrospect as the "Litany of Nittany" (tons of Penn State fans) and heard many a chuckle, snort, raspberry, and snide comment thrown in our direction.

(My two personal favorites: "Oh look, they actually have fans!" and - one with whom we actually had a brief conversation - "We specifically scheduled our Disney trip for this weekend because we were playing YOU.")

Upon returning to the park in the afternoon, I was extremely disappointed not to re-encounter any of these folks...but what more than made up for it was the DOZENS of people - from an extremely large cross section of rooting interests, I might add - coming in for a high five or shouting congratulations as they passed by, and it continued into Sunday when I was wearing my Vikings shirt. That was a STATEMENT game, people took notice, and - under the "everyone loves the underdog" corollary - were genuinely happy for us.

Let's keep this thing rolling. I've heard that Pasadena is beautiful in early January.

That shows how beaten down and whacked out our thinking is. Play for the National title or play in a nice bowl game with a better chance to win.
Oh no. If we play for the national title we might take a beating from one of those big nasty SEC schools.
That is beyond pathetic. Especially considering if we do play for the National Title we have already beat Iowa, Wisconsin, Northwester and oSU. If we have done that we should be confident that we can compete with anybody.

Absolutely. Beat Iowa and the Big Ten west is ours. A chance to shock the world with a win over oSU.
