With the 25th pick in the two thousand and twenty NFL draft, the Minnesota Vikings select....

Sing it with me:
Trade up?
Trade Down?
Will Trader Rick even be around?
He gets his kicks
From those vaunted 10 picks
But just because you own the 7th round
Doesn't make you Super Bowl bound

Trader Rick
Trader Rick
He loves his 10 picks

Have to stick with my tag line after what I witnessed today.

Until we get it right we have to go Oline. Our defense was on the field the whole game.

2 keys to building a good team.

Everything starts up front. OLine and DLine need to be better.

Quality over Quantity. Only 53 guys on a roster and many of them never see the field. Stock piling 7th rounders might find a diamond occasionally but they rarely help, and rarely help immediately. We have one more season with Kirk and a pretty good nucleus to try and get over the top. We need to draft a few studs to fill holes. Trade up if necessary.

Hopefully guys like Udoh/Samia will step up in 2020 as starters. While immediate gratification feels best (trust me no one knows that better than me) IMO if you can load up on later round picks that maybe take an extra year of development to equate to players taken say 3-4 rounds taken before them eventually you end up ahead of the curve player talent wise. Of course if that doesn't get you over the top, maybe you end up drafting in the low 20s, year after year. The other option is sucking for 5-6 seasons in order to draft top 10 in the draft and build your roster that way.

The Senior Bowl is January 25th. That's pretty soon! I guess it's the weekend between conference championships and the Super Bowl. I have not watched the Super Bowl two years in a row. (I hate the Patriots that much that I couldn't watch it) I haven't decided if I will watch this year. Maybe not. I don't really watch the Senior Bowl either. I like to read about the practices and the evaluations online. That's when I start paying attention to the draft.

Drafting 25th kind of bleeps. It is what it is. I do like to see where the players go, though. It's not just the Vikings draft.

I agree with what some others have said - O-line and D-line need to be a top priority. Secondary next. I liked some of what I saw from Samia and Udoh in the last regular season game against the Bears. They both played a lot and had some good snaps. They will need a big off season though. Some guys I like:

A.J. Epenesa DE/DT - could drop (long shot) - I think this guy is misplaced in college and could be a dominate force as a 3-technique in the pros. He has the strength and skills to pressure the middle.
Ben Bresdeson - G - Tough dude. People mover. Our RB's would love this guy. Smart - 2 time team captain.
Tristan Wirfs - T - Another player that could be gone by the time the Vikings are on the clock. Athletic and ridiculously strong. Good head on his shoulders and well liked by his team mates. I love watching him on screens get downfield and toss db's.
Austin Jackson - T - I like some of his film and his athleticism. Great feet and movement skills. Just worry a little about how he got his ass handed to him by A.J. Epenasa in their bowl game.
Josh Jones -T - Houston - Good in pass protection, great size and athleticism, could be a sleeper.
Leki Fotu - DT - Great size, motor, Plays with passion, is fun to watch how disruptive he is on tape.

Below are the Vikings' first round picks since 2012 (their first pick if they had more than one), and the next QB taken after the Vikings' slot. Provides some perspective on how difficult it can be to draft the right QB.

2012 4-Matt Kalil, 8-Ryan Tannehill
2013 23-Sharrif Floyd, 39-Geno Smith
2014 9-Anthony Barr, 22-Johnny Manziel
2015 11-Trae Waynes, 75-Garrett Grayson
2016 23-Laquon Treadwell, 26-Paxton Lynch
2017 41-Dalvin Cook, 52-DeShone Kizer
2018 30-Mike Hughes, 32-Lamar Jackson
2019 18-Garrett Bradbury, 42-Drew Lock

The Vikings were never going to wait on drafting a starting QB on the off chance a good one fell to 30, and they were always going to sign a QB to compete for a Super Bowl, so they'd never have drafted a QB in the first round of that draft. The "whom we could have drafted" game is very fun, but that scenario was never going to happen, and almost everyone in here would have been apoplectic if we drafted a QB in the first round after signing a franchise QB.

One guy turned 23 a week ago, led the NFL in TD passes and had 365 passing yards and 143 rushing yards in their Playoff loss.

I did a quick peek of the offensive linemen in the draft. It doesn't look like there will be a prospect worthy of our first round pick who is a good fit for our scheme. I mean it's early and I am no expert on these players. Just I'm sharing my thoughts. My first inclination now is that the Vikings will go for a defensive lineman or a cornerback in the first. There seem to be options at both positions. Since we have had such good luck with later round defensive linemen, then a corner would be the more likely, but I do believe we need more disruption from the middle of our defensive line.

I saw one guru picking a linebacker for us in the first round. I just don't see that. We are paying big bucks to the two UCLA grads and a lot of time there are only two linebackers on the field. That would just not make sense.

We have more needs than draft picks. That is a problem. Trading back and then taking an OG might make sense. Way to early. I don't know why I'm even speculating.

I really like Tyler Biadasz from Wisconsin. He's a power interior guy who can trap and pull. And, I would like to resign Kearse and use him as our sam lb. He would be on the field a lot, and his responsibility would be covering te's and rb's on passing downs.

I like the way you think. I hadn't thought of drafting another center. I checked and there's another prospect from Oklahoma who is supposed to be special and is a complete player. (ie strong and athletic both) The thing about centers is that they are often interchanged to be guards. We converted Eflein from center to guard. His play last year has led a lot of us to say he needs to be replaced, but I do believe he wasn't all bad. Nevertheless he may be better as a backup for a team with a great offensive line. We can see how the Niners built their team from the line of scrimmage on both offense and defense. I was disappointed in the play of Bradbury. Everyone says that the jury is still out about him, but it seemed to me he was the weak link to our o-line this season.

The only problem with Kearse is he thinks he is worth a lot and I dont think he can hold up at LB....

The bigger problem is the rift between him and Zimmer. Kearse has signaled he's done here.

The problem with going with offensive players from the Big 12 is you don't really know what you are going to get because they play against the worst defensive players/teams/schemes in the country at the Division 1 level. Yes, even worse than the PAC XX.

That's one really good thing about the Senior Bowl. The scouts get to see them compete vs. each other in practice and watch how they respond to coaching.

Okay, now that I’m back from dinner and have enough booze in me to warm me up, here are my thoughts on today’s Senior Bowl practices in no particular order:

1- Michael Pittman Jr’s route savvy is a sight to behold. Tons of little nods, great releases, really dominated.

2- @Djack11_had himself A DAY during South practice. Gave every WR fits with his physicality in press. Even Van Jefferson was praising him post-practice. I saw him constantly shifting leverages late and reading routes before they were even run. Extremely smart corner.

3- Javon Kinlaw is somehow 315 but doesn’t look like it all. Dude is rocked up like crazy. Highly explosive. A bit of a bull in a china shop in 1v1s but he’s got limitless potential. Special athlete with very high motor on every rep.

4- Jordan Love had a great day. This was an excellent opportunity for him to showcase his arm in a cold and windy environment and he nailed it. His ball cut through the wind while others struggled, and had some excellent placement too. He’s one to watch for sure.

5- Lloyd Cushenberry had some really nice reps. He’s not the biggest guy but the way he drops anchor and out-leverages people in pass pro was really impressive. He got the better of Kinlaw and Davidson a few times.

6- Ben Bartch proved he belonged here. Very solid day.

7- Terrell Lewis’ ability to dominate with length and drive people into the QB with a one arm stab is fun to watch. He got Bartch on a nasty counter spin inside as well. Highly valuable body type and skillset as a 3-4 OLB. Can play him strong or weak side no problem.

If Jordan Love is available when the Vikes pick in the 1st they have to draft him. Otherwise, they should draft Jalen Hurst in the 2nd. The team needs to draft their QBOTF now.
