Interesting developement in the Redskins team name brouhaha...

http://tracking.si.com/2014/06/18/washington-redskins-trademark-cancelled/

They can't trademark any of their shit anymore. This could be the tipping point in the fight. You want to send a message to a rich guy. Find a way to cut into his income. Daniel Snyder will lose money because of this now.

Did SI just reprint that article for The Onion?

Hmm, so it's OK to refer to a potato by the color of it's skin?

Goodel doesn't make sense.

A kid can't get his substance abuse under control he's suspended for a year.
A star kills someone while drunk driving...
A star gets implicated in a murder, pleads guilty to obstruction and gets...
A star beats his soon to be wife in a casino and gets TWO GAMES?

Seriously,
The author is right...the NFL is not taking domestic violence seriously.

I'm not saying Rice didn't deserve more, but has he been in trouble before?

The NFL line of thinking as it relates to discipline may be somewhat soft, but I'm also sure its fueled by their negotiated contract with the NFLPA. They cant just arbitrarily decide to suspend a guy for 16 games for a first offense, at least without a buy-in from the union.

So, I don't know if its the NFL doesn't take some crimes more serious over others more so than it is what agreements they have in place in regards to structure and progression of their discipline system that again, was negotiated in concert with the union.

What does the latest NFLPA MOU say about first time offenses for criminal acts or convictions or whatever? And of those things, are certain crimes, like murder, weighted over others, like theft or battery? I'm just asking.

If the collective bargaining agreement does not allow more stiff punishment then it is wrong. And the NFL should not have agreed to it. They should have demanded more authority. But of course they didn't do that, and they wouldn't do that.

If the league's hands are tied it is still their fault for allowing them to be tied. They created this situation with the player's union.

I agree with you. I also know it took over a year for that MOU to be fully negotiated and ratified.

So, no telling if that was a sticking point or not.

Absolutely no excuse. Our society still doesn't see crimes against women the way it should. Outrageous numbers of sexual assaults on campuses. The United States Armed Forces might be the mostly likely place for a person to be sexually assaulted. What do we do? Does the mainstream media cover this?

In the last ten years, take a guess as to how many female Notre Dame students reported a sexual assault? When that sexual assault was allegedly committed by a student athlete, who do you think the Institution sided with? That's just one school. While the sports world was wrapped up in the Manti Te'o story, there were actual crimes against women on that same campus, with little media coverage.

Again, performance enhancers are bad, and we will come down hard on you if we catch you. But we are also kind enough to administer an endless supply of Toradol, just so you can play. All legal of course.

When the cameras and police catch you beating a woman.......we can work with that.

Chuck Knoblauch is a serial woman beater. Lets count the days he spent in prison. Meanwhile our prison industry is booming because we incarcerate low level marijuana dealers. Who is more dangerous to society? Knoblauch, and the people like him, are damaged goods. Probably damaged beyond repair. Ray Rice? I don't give a shit if that is the first time he got caught beating a female.

NFL should get their act right. Your hard line stance on performance enhancers makes you look really damn silly every time one of your players beats a woman, or drives drunk.

Any man who puts his hands on a woman in anger is weak. What really bugs me, though, is how some people in the media try to justify what rice did, almost to the point of saying it was the woman's fault for getting abused. I just don't understand that.

I don't believe I could ever be driven to hit a woman. And my wife was wild ass crazy for an extended period. But, what are we supposed to do when the woman that was hit can't go far enough to lessen the offense. She was the one that was hit and probably implored whoever would listen to get that she was the one out of control.

I don't know all the details. Some speculation there on my part.

I'm looking at you Steven A. Smith.

He kept oscillating between saying that assaulting a woman is wrong, but oh by the way what did she do to provoke it and why doesn't anyone talk about that.

And his clumsy backpedaling is even more pathetic.

His basic point seemed to be "I'm against domestic assault, but bitches best ought to do their part and stay in line so they don't need to be hit in the first place."

What a guy.

Yeah, very poor showing.

He is a family friend too.

There is this growing (and sick) sentiment that because many women are now trying to fight men like men that it is ok for the man to fight them back.

I even hear this theory from WOMEN

"If you want to fight like a man you get beat like a man"

bullshit

As a man I hope you are strong enough to restrain your woman without knocking them out and then dragging them like a sack of potatoes.

And here's a thought: If the woman in your life is so out of control and wacky that you get to the point of even THINKING of hitting her - just leave! Leave the relationship, move out, file for divorce, whatever. The relationship is toxic regardless of which side (or more probably both) are to blame. Avoid the physical violence by just backing away.

AGREED 100%

If a woman fears her man is going to beat her

If a man fears his woman is going to put hands on him

Either way, time to go!

Offer simple solutions to complex problems much?

I'm proud that I had the patience and resilience to work things out with my wife. She had a lot of anger and trust issues stemming from childhood issues. I didn't give up on her though.

My "simple solution" offered a menu of choices. Back away, move out, just leave, leave the relationship, file for divorce - - - some of those are more permanent solutions, some more temporary (back away, just leave). Most psychologists will advise taking a break, stepping back, whatever you want to call it, when things escalate.

I was in a heated discussion with my wife over something stupid. I ended up taking a walk around the block and I realized how silly the issue was. I was laughing about it by the time I made it back home.
