Don't know much about her other than Teague was impressed enough to hire her twice. According to the article she turned two programs around. Big South Conference coach of the year right out of the gate for bringing Winthrop only its second winning season in 26 years. VCU went from losing to 20-10 in her second year. She is supposed to have pulled in a pretty good recruiting class, despite a late start. She has the downside of sharing some of the same playing path as Pam Borton with her Ohio roots.

I'm wondering if this is the easy way out for Teague. Hiring Stolings keeps him from doing due diligence vetting other coaches. This process went to fast.

I did notice that she has been an assistant at quite a few different schools. This can help her piece together a good resume and put the best of them together to develop her own system. Plus I would assume this helps in recruiting by having contacts all over the country.

I don't believe Teague took the easy road Jim. Teague always has a short list from his constant networking in basketball. Stollings is another product of his Villa 7 program. He vetted her once with VCU and she turned the program around quickly. He already has a butt load of information her. Track record suggests that Teague is pretty diligent about his basketball hires. I believe the Pitino hiring took longer because there is a lot more competition for elite coaching prospects in men's basketball because of all the money.

According to the report Her assistant coaching background includes being the recruiting coordinator along with being responsible for running the offense for 4 years at Mississippi.

Right now Teague has enough credibility with me that I have to give him the benefit of the doubt on who he hires for this job.

It's official Marlene Stollings hired as the new Gopher coach. Sounds like she is in the Pitino mold, where she likes to run an uptempo offense.

Nice pick up for new coach Stallings. Old Dominion's top scorer and rebounder graduated early and is transferring to Minnesota for he final year of eligibility, while she works on her masters. Shae Kelley is a 6'1" forward who averaged 17.8 points and 9.7 rebounds and had 17 double-doubles.

Confession I have barely paid attention to Gophers Ladies hoops since the Whalen/McCarville years. Have they done anything since. Big Ten middle of the pack better or worse?

That's about it. I'm no expert, but the complaints on Borton are chiefly a complete inability to get the most out of her players. She's had some talent in the program, yet they consistently underachieve. There are other examples where she pretty clearly has had issues engaging her players: nearly half the team transferred not long after the Final Four run.

Maturi rewarded her with multiple contract extensions, including an unpublicized extension as he was walking out the door. The guy has been properly skewered for his rank incompetence, but never for his borderline corrupt dealings.

I saw that Jim. It looks like Stallings is already impressed with her. Especially her conditioning, which is going to be huge in the new system.

There is a really good article in the Pioneer Press about Amanda Zahui B. Apparently she did a Mo Walker and lost 40 lbs playing with the Swedish National team in the off season.

Probably because Borton told everyone what a coup it was. Wagner's parents were interviewed and they pretty well confirmed she wasn't at all interested in leaving the state.

Lost in the shuffle of the football team playing THE OSU, Pitino vs. Pitino and Gopher hockey is that Marlene Stollings and the women's team unveiled the new "Fury" offense. It appears to be as advertised even if Southeastern Louisiana isn't exactly Final Four material. Scoring 109 points en route to a 49 point victory is still pretty impressive. I can't remember a single game under Borton where 3 Gophers scored over 20 points, let alone the fact that none of them was Rachel Banham. She did just fine, scoring 18 pts with 4 reb and 6 asst and becoming the 4th player in Gopher history to top 2,000 points. She's a mere 274 pts behind Lindsey Whalen's record and will probably break it before mid-season.

The players love the system. Shae Kelley exercised her graduation loophole to leave Old Dominion and play her senior season for Stollings because she was so impressed with the system after playing against it for 2 years. She scored 21 pts with 10 reb. Kayla Hirt who everyone kind of forgot was a top 30 recruit because of her knee injuries and being in the same class as Banham scored 22 pts with 7 rebounds. The beat reporters for both fish wraps expect her to be the surprise player of the year in the Big Ten. Amanda Zahui B. displayed her new svelte look (dropped 40 lbs. in the off-season). Pre-season All Big Ten selection came off the bench due to a sore hamstring and contributed a mere 20 pts., 12 reb and 5 blocks in 22 minutes. Carley Wagner made her debut in the starting lineup with 6 pts, 5 reb and 4 asst in 25 min.

This is a refreshing change after years of Borton's plodding, clueless, walk the ball up, half court sets. This is a system top players will want play. I don't expect Stollings to loose the future Nia Coffees, Taylor Hills and Jenna Smiths and Rebecca Dahlman's year after after year like Borton did.

They stomped a couple of human sacrifices, so it's too early too tell how serious their Final Four aspirations are. With that said there is some serious division 1 talent on this team with Banham, Zahui B., Kelley, Wagner and Hirt. On top of it they have a coach who finally knows how to use that talent. I predict a Big Ten championship and a high seed for the dance.

On a related note, Stollings got her first commit from Danielle Garven, a a very athletic 6'1" guard on the Canadian junior national team.
