I hadn't heard about that. I think a couple of them only played the second half of the season last year. The big problem is that they make waaaaaaaaay more money playing over seas than they do in the WNBA. I imagine Whalen and Augustus are going to need some significant time off to rehab if they do play.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (10/22/2015 10:34:27 AM)

Yup. Hard to pass up the overseas money.

WNBA max salary is just over 100K. Top players can make up to 6x that for a shorter season in Europe/Asia.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (10/23/2015 2:25:16 AM)

Guess this is what I saw. Re-reading it, doesn't really say they are vowing to change much.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The victory parade was over, the party music in the arena was winding down and the Minnesota Lynx were beginning to exchange their goodbyes after a third WNBA title in five years.

Backstage, one of their leaders was pondering the future of this dynasty, with three starters 31 and older who all fought injuries in 2015.

There are no plans to concede, though. The Lynx will return determined to keep chasing championships with this core. Winter leagues overseas are where the players make the most money, but that's also where their bodies can get beat up without enough time to recover from the five-month WNBA season. Seimone Augustus, Lindsay Whalen and Rebekkah Brunson will begin to taper their international participation so they can stay fresh for the summers ahead.

"Money's not everything, not when you're talking about dynasties and legacies and inspiring young women and men and opening peoples' minds," Augustus said. "Money can't buy the experience of those opportunities. I'm comfortable financially. I think a lot of the young ladies here are comfortable financially. We're not super rich like the guys, but we can't complain. So we'll definitely take our time with the decisions we make over the next few years."

This team, and the league, means a lot to them.

"We'll just kind of gauge how we feel because we really want to continue to be here for the Lynx and build not just the Lynx but the WNBA as well," Augustus said. "As long as you've got a powerhouse team like the Lynx around and other teams, it'll continue to help this league grow."

These decisions won't apply to Maya Moore yet, of course. She averaged 23.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists in the 10 playoff games, at the age of 26.

"Maya's too young to discuss that," Augustus said.

Injuries to Augustus, Brunson and Whalen and a midseason trade that changed the team's dynamic by bringing WNBA Finals MVP Sylvia Fowles into the post made this season more of a grind than Minnesota's first two titles. So that meant there was even more to savor.

WNBA Announces Major Schedule Changes to Regular and Post-Season

The WNBA post-season will feature the teams with the best eight records in the league, regardless of conference, and will be seeded 1-8 based entirely on record.

This is a switch from the previous format, in which the top 4 teams in each conference made the playoffs, which were intra-conference until the Finals.

The playoff format will also change, with the top two teams getting double-byes into the semifinals, and the 3rd and 4th seeded teams getting byes to the 2nd round.

The first and second rounds will be single eliminations, with 5 hosting 8 and 6 hosting 7 in round one, after which the teams are re-seeded and 3 will host the lowest remaining seed and 4 hosting the other team left.

The semis will feature yet another re-seed, with the top team facing the weakest remaining team and the 2nd best team hosting the remaining team in best of five series' that will be formatted H-H-A-A-H.

The Finals will remain a best of five with a 2-2-1 format.

There are also changes to the regular season schedule, which will be more balanced. Teams will play 18 games against their six non-conference opponents (three games against each, with home court determined randomly and rotated), and 16 games against their five conference opponents (4 games against one opponent, 3 against the other four opponents).

Formerly, teams played 12 games (home and away) against each non-conference opponent and 22 against their five conference opponents.

Canis recap:

With the 14th overall pick in the WNBA draft, the Lynx selected Jazmon Gwathmey from James Madison University. The Lynx traded the rights to Gwathmey to the San Antonio Stars for veteran Jia Perkins. Perkins is a 12 year veteran who has been with the Stars for the last five seasons. She had a tough shooting season in 2015, but still averaged over 13 points a game. She will be competing for back up minutes in the back court, and will need to show her three point shooting stroke, which has been strong throughout most of her career but poor last season is back in form in order to wrest away minutes from Renee Montgomery and Anna Cruz.

Bashara Graves from the University of Tennessee was the Lynx 2nd pick in the second round. She's a 6'2" power forward and a rebounder. Her nickname at Tennessee was Beast because of her relentless work on the boards. Graves shot over 50% all four years at Tennessee, though does not feature much of a perimeter game. Her game is in the paint and around the basket, and will look to make the team as a backup to Rebekkah Brunson. The Lynx traded Dev Peters during the off-season, so there might be an opportunity for Graves to make the club.

With their final pick, the Lynx selected Temi Fagbenle, a native of Nigeria who played for Great Britain in the 2012 Olympic Games and attended Harvard before transferring to USC for a final year of eligibility and graduate school. She's a 6'4" rebounder who will be competing with Graves for a roster spot.

In a final local note, University of Minnesota scoring machine Rachel Banham was selected 4th overall by the Connecticut Sun.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/18/2016 4:10:11 PM)

Season Starts with Lynx hosting Phoenix May 14th on ESPN. It doesn't get much better than that.
Go Lynx!!!

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/18/2016 5:36:58 PM)

Could somebody help me figure out the Lynx likely roster for this season. Of course we have the core Moore, Augustus, Whalen, Fowles and Brunson then I would think that Cruz and Montgomery are locks. I would assume Howard also since we traded Peters for her. Other than them I don't know.

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/18/2016 7:08:12 PM)

Cruz won't be playing this year.

It's too bad. She was a very key reserve in the playoffs. Good player.

Is she injured or having a baby or playing strictly overseas, I will google it.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/18/2016 7:56:08 PM)

I googled her and found out nothing about her not playing this season.

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/18/2016 9:39:00 PM)

She will not be playing in the WNBA this summer to focus on playing for Spain's national team.

"Spanish guard Anna Cruz — so important to the Lynx in 2015 — won’t start the season with the Lynx while she plays for the Spanish national team, and Reeve said Cruz might not play in the WNBA this season. With that in mind the Lynx re-signed Renee Montgomery and now have signed Elhotova."

So she could play for us later. I get the Olympic thing and representing your country.

The Lynx represent a full 3rd of the US Olympic Team:

Pretty damn awesome
It's not the league I'd choose to be the BEST in for YEARS
But still proud to say this is Minnesitas team.
Give me one men's professional team that reaches where these women have gone?
I die happy.

Janel McCarville appears set to return to Lynx
If the ex-Gopher pronounces herself physically healthy after playing in Europe, she's expected to join the Lynx.
By Kent Youngblood Star Tribune MAY 2, 2016 — 6:21PM

It appears Janel McCarville will be coming back to Minnesota…again.

The former University of Minnesota star center, who helped the Lynx to the 2013 WNBA title, has agreed in principal to return to the Lynx as a backup to Sylvia Fowles this season, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations.

No official deal is done. McCarville’s return will hinge on how she feels physically in the coming weeks; she just finished playing for a team in Turkey.

But her return would provide more veteran depth in the post for the Lynx, who will be trying for a third time to win back-to-back league titles when the 2016 season begins this month.

It would also re-reunite McCarville with her former Gophers teammate Lindsay Whalen. The two helped lead the Gophers to the NCAA Final Four in the spring of 2004, then spent two seasons together with the Lynx.

Acquired in a three-team trade from the New York Liberty in March of 2013 McCarville — who had sat out the 2011 season after a dispute with the Liberty — came to Minnesota and averaged 6.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists for the Lynx, who surged to their second WNBA title in three seasons.

In 2014 McCarville averaged 7.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists for the Lynx, who were eliminated in the Western Conference finals by the Phoenix Mercury, which went on to win the league title.

Last year, citing health, McCarville — who had battled back problems during the 2014 season — decided not to play during the WNBA season, though she frequently attended Lynx games.

Minnesota, after acquiring Fowles in a mid-season trade, returned to the finals, beating Indiana in five games for a third title in five seasons.

McCarville would add much-needed inside depth to a Lynx team that is determined, in an Olympic year, not to overtax their star players; Fowles and Whalen, along with Maya Moore and Seimone Augustus, will be on the U.S. team playing in the Games this summer.

The 6-2 McCarville, 33, is a strong defender and a standout passer from the post. She, along with Natasha Howard — acquired in an off-season trade that sent Devereaux Peters to Indiana — would be experienced backups to Fowles and Rebekkah Brunson.

When she made the decision to sit out last summer, McCarville indicated that, should she return to the WNBA, the Lynx would be the only team she would want to play for. Now, it could happen.

Very nice to hear. I wonder if she has much left?

When Reeve tried to recruit Montgomery to re-sign with Minnesota this offseason, the coach lamented how every year the Lynx have attempted to repeat as WNBA champion, the season has aligned with a major international competition — this time the Olympic Games in Rio.

Montgomery immediately started to laugh. Loudly.

“I thought, ‘What the heck was so funny about that?’ ” Reeve said. “And she said, ‘Coach, those are like first world problems.’ ”

quote:

…Augustus is in Russia playing with Dynamo Kursk. Brunson is in Italy with Passalacqua Ragusa.

Normally the Lynx would prefer to give players a few days off between the end of their overseas season and the start of their season in Minnesota. Reeve would still prefer to do that with Augustus and Brunson, if possible.
“It all depends on how late it ends up being,” Reeve said. “But certainly, we should be in a position to do that. …

Good news, Seimone’s season ended Tue night so she should be state side soon. Brunson on the other had is in a semi’s tied 1-1 in best of 3. Gm 3 is any day now ?

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (5/9/2016 2:12:54 PM)

If I understand the new WNBA playoff format correctly finishing first or second is Huge. They will seed the playoffs based on regular season record regardless of conference. Teams finishing 5-8 will play in first round winners moving on to play the teams finishing 3-4 in the second round. The winners of the second round will face teams 1-2 in the semifinals. So finishing 1st or second gets the team two byes in the playoffs.

El Duderino -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (5/9/2016 3:18:11 PM)

But I wonder if that can lead to a bit of rust - something you can't afford in a five game series.

I was thinking about that same thing, but with the age of our players and how beat up everyone is at the end of the season I would take the two series off to rest and heal up.

Pretty cool to see McCarville back
Love her combo of big beast/smart facilitator
Always thought her BB IQ is off the charts good.

The most fun ladies basketball I ever watched until the Lynx run with Moore was the Gophers with Whalen and McCarville. They had such chemistry together. Whalen is drafted 4th or 5th I think and a year later McCarville goes first overall.

I doubt she has much left in the tank, but she should be able to spell our starters with some solid minutes.

I see McCarville as about a 10-12 MPG player at this point in her career.
