I'll give Reeves credit
She is, what we say we want .... A pusher who isn't satisfied to "just win"

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (5/15/2017 11:13:05 AM)

Yep, she went after the defensive rebounding right away. Pointed out that they lost game 5 because they allowed offensive rebounds then right out of the chute, they allowed offensive rebounds. Kind of like Herbie. More irritated after a win than a loss.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (5/15/2017 1:13:51 PM)

Very good comparison

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (5/19/2017 12:33:26 PM)

2-0.

Defense has been exceptional both games. Both in transition and in the halfcourt.

The commitment to shooting more 3s is starting to pay off too. We're not lighting it up by any means, but the improved spacing is doing wonders for Whalen and the post players.

Maya is in a serious shooting funk, but is doing everything else at an MVP level.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (5/21/2017 11:48:38 AM)

3-0

Foulest has been far and away our best player through 3 games. I don't think there is a player in the league that can guard her without help. I love that Reeve is committed to running more offense through her.

Maya continues to struggle shooting.

Our backcourt again showed they can struggle with pressure.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (5/24/2017 10:49:09 AM)

The Lynx are 4-0, Sylvia Fowles looks like an MVP, and their team defense might be even better than a season ago when they led the league in defensive rating.

But there are still glaring issues that are becoming all too familiar for the team. Tuesday night featured another inferior opponent hanging around late into the fourth quarter and another offensive performance overwrought with stagnation and turnovers.

Some of the team's issues can be traced to the current in-flux nature of the rotation and the minutes distribution. Coach Cheryl Reeve blamed some of it on fatigue, and spoke to what she can do to help the situation.

"I gotta get people out of the game, they don’t wanna come out of the game, but they gotta come out of the game," Reeve said.

Minnesota has played four games in nine nights. As of this posting they are one of only two teams that have played four games this season. Most teams have played three. Combine that with the physical realities of the oldest roster in the WNBA, and you can start to see how the team started the game as Reeve put it, "flat."

"I thought we came out really flat, honestly I thought our arena was flat today, I thought everything was flat, our intros, which are not ordinarily so flat. Everything was flat, not the fans fault, but it was flat. Everything was flat."

The Connecticut Sun took advantage of that flatness and turned the Lynx over 13 times in the first half. Many of those turnovers were of the 'live-ball' variety which Connecticut converted into fast break layups and open threes. Sun guard Jasmine Thomas hit three of her career high five three pointers in the opening half as the Lynx struggled to close-out open shooters. They also committed multiple shot-clock violations. These problems stemmed from the ball-pressure the Sun put on the Lynx perimeter players. The Lynx were unable to break down the Sun off the dribble or consistently find cutters, and the Sun had success blitzing the pick-and-roll.

Minnesota was much better to start the second half and finished the third quarter on a 21-8 run. Fowles asserted herself in the post, and Seimone Augustus found her range from the perimeter. Augustus finished with 18 points in her best outing of the season, following her game winner in Dallas on Saturday night.

The Lynx had a mostly comfortable lead in the final frame, but due to six turnovers and a couple of missed free throws, the game came down to the final moments. After a pair of missed free throws by Lindsay Whalen, the Sun had a final possession to tie or go ahead but were stopped multiple times by Sylvia Fowles who had five blocks in the game.

Notes:

-Gopher Women's Basketball all-time leading scorer Rachel Banham made her WNBA debut tonight after missing almost all of last season with a knee injury. She finally got into the game in the second half, received a standing ovation, missed two shots, and sat down after three minutes.

-The free throw advantage was huge for the Lynx. They went 15-22 from the stripe as the Sun were only 4-6. Minnesota currently leads the league in FTA per game.

She's shooting the ball horribly, but isn't letting it affect the rest of her game. 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 1.5 steals, very good defense.

They'd be 6-0 if she was worth a crap.
Wait ...

And despite being undefeated and having the player of the month, Sheryl Reeve is still ready to head butt people.

100-77 final

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/3/2017 11:55:44 PM)

Canis:

In what was their best performance of the season, the Lynx dominated the first half, scoring at will on their way to a 64-39 halftime lead, and then cruised to a 100-77 win over the Seattle Storm in Seattle. The Storm came into the game at 4-1, behind only the Lynx in the Western Conference standings, and the Lynx appeared to want to make a statement.

They did so offensively. The first half featured an array of jumpers from Lindsay Whalen and Seimone Augustus, and a complete evisceration of the Storm inside by Sylvia Fowles, who went 10-11 in the first half and scored 26. On the rare occasion they missed a shot, they cleaned up the offensive glass, grabbing eight offensive rebounds in the first half to only five defensive boards for the Storm. Fowles was establishing incredible position down low, and her composed finishing is on a different level this season.

In the second half, the Storm took Fowles away (she did not score,) but it didn’t matter, as Rebekkah Brunson took her turn to dominate. After a quiet first half, she exploded to finish with 21 points on 9-10 from the field. Overall, the Lynx starting bigs shot 19-22 from the field and combined for 47. Combine that with 7-14 shooting from three, dominance on the glass, and it adds up to a rout.

After winning their first six games primarily on the strength of their defense, tonight their offense came to the fore. Fowles has been terrific all season, but when Whalen and Augustus are making their perimeter shots, this looks like a different team.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/4/2017 7:30:20 PM)

I guess it's pretty normal to be "hot and cold" with outside shooting. The Lynx seem to have a lot of ways to win games, though, including good defense. I hope they can keep it up.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/10/2017 10:48:47 AM)

The Lynx set season highs in three-pointers made and attempted as they shot 11 of 24 from behind the arc. This must please the coaching staff, as boosting their three point attempts was a major point of emphasis before the season started. After finishing 11th out of 12 teams in attempts and makes last year, the Lynx are now 5th in 3PM and 4th in 3PA, with a quarter of the season in the books. They’re getting buy-in from players who, in previous seasons, would shy away from the long ball. Rebekkah Brunson has made more threes this season than in the previous 12 of her career. Lindsay Whalen and Seimone Augustus are on pace to attempt more threes than they have in years. Three of Sylvia Fowles' career high five assists Friday resulted in made three point baskets. It's easier to find open looks from deep when you have the current MVP front runner drawing so much attention in the paint. The directive from coach Reeve to space the floor is being embraced by the team and we are seeing the results.

After dominating with defense through the first few games of the season, the offense has really come alive, especially over the last two games. The perimeter players have been making shots, and seeing Moore find the range is fantastic for Lynx fans. But we’re seeing a shift in how the Lynx play. For years they have relied on those perimeter stars to carry the bulk of the scoring load, with Brunson and whoever occupied the center spot setting screens and rebounding. Adding a star in Sylvia Fowles gave them another weapon, but this season we’re seeing the front court take on a lot more scoring responsibility. Fowles and Brunson led the team in shot attempts last night with 15 and 12 respectively, which follows the season trend in which both those players are taking more shots than last season, while the other three starters are all down.

-With the win on Friday, Lindsay Whalen officially passed Swin Cash as the winningest player in the history of the league. She has now won 295 WNBA games.

You play well and long enough on very good teams you will have that record. Congrats to Lindsay.

9-0 after crushing Dallas.

Maya starting to find her shot. 23 points, 5/8 from deep.

Big Syl continues to be the league MVP with 30 and 9. The only thing that stopped her from another double-double was fouling out in 27 minutes.

Bench is continuing to do enough to help keep the starters fresh. Seimone at 27 MPG, Whalen at 24.

Anybody know the WNBA record for most wins to start a season. I couldn't find it on a quick internet search. I was thinking maybe the Lynx owned it. Is 9-0 closing in?
