Discuss European leagues here.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: European soccer (2/16/2017 8:54:18 AM)

You created a thread for me to talk to myself? I smell a trap.

TJSweens -> RE: European soccer (2/16/2017 9:47:40 AM)

He has NASCAR so that he can talk to himself, I wouldn't say it's a trap.

twinsfan -> RE: European soccer (10/11/2017 10:06:12 AM)

Should we use this thread for World Cup posts? Or does it make more sense to set up a separate World Cup thread?

Jeff Jesser -> RE: European soccer (10/11/2017 12:18:24 PM)

Use Tim's. There isn't enough soccer talk to separate them like in other sports.

twinsfan -> RE: European soccer (12/17/2017 9:09:34 AM)

Watching a game between something called Stuttgart and something called Bayern. If I'm understanding the clock correctly, they are 50 minutes in and the score is........0-0.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: European soccer (12/17/2017 4:04:41 PM)

Probably. That is the German Bundesliga. One of the best leagues in the world. Bayern are "Bayern Munich". Owned by Volkswagen. They win the league damn near every year.

joejitsu -> RE: European soccer (1/3/2018 5:07:59 PM)

Arsenal! 2-2 vs. the hated chelsea. I hope they fire Wenger and do some damage during the transfer window. They must be tired of being also rans.

SoMnFan -> RE: European soccer (1/3/2018 5:13:39 PM)

I admire you guys who understand European Soccer.
Completely overwhelming to me.
I can't get myself to start even LOOKING at it ....

Ha! The funny thing is, I cannot watch the MLS. I enjoy the European leagues, though. Arsenal is the club I support because my wife and I stayed in London near their old stadium, and I was able to catch one of their matches. The crowd was so into the game that it caught on with me. Arsenal also seems to be the most "Vikings cursed" team in the league!

joejitsu -> RE: European soccer (1/7/2018 11:59:29 AM)

Well, that was embarassing. Arsenal loses in third round of the FA cup. The first time in 20 years. Wenger has to go now.

That's my team Joe. It's not gonna happen no matter what. He'll step down when it's his decision. I don't like it but it's the facts.

My club, too. I don't get what the board is thinking. Wenger's arrogance and need for control is killing the Gunners. I felt so bad for the lone guy in the stands at the last match screaming "Rubbish" at the team as they were walking off the pitch. It's got to be frustrating.

twinsfan -> RE: European soccer (5/11/2019 8:54:29 AM)

There's offside in soccer? Watching Dortmund vs Dusseldorf. I couldn't believe it....I actually saw a "goal" live...I was initially very impressed. All of a sudden it's like "Hey, that might not count!" I'm like, HUH??? Replay shows it was offside. But they don't explain what that means. Where's the blue line? So they take the goal off the board. 0-0. That will probably be the final score.

twinsfan -> RE: European soccer (5/11/2019 9:01:47 AM)

Getting a goal taken off the board in soccer is like holding the winning Powerball ticket and being told they're gonna re-draw the numbers.

This would be a lot easier in person but I'll try to explain. First off, yes and no. You can't be offside if you are on your side of the pitch (the defending side) but as soon as you cross over the mid field point, any part of that side of the pitch you can be. You also can't be offside on a throw in no matter where you are on the pitch.

So, assuming you are on the attacking side of the pitch, and it's not a throw in, you can be offside at any point. But you are right, there is no static 'blue line' as you called it. No attacking player can be past the last defender when the ball is kicked. That's the key. It's why you see (in a traditional 4-4-2 setup) all 4 defenders trying to keep a straight back line. They will all push up the pitch at the same time, where possible. It makes communication so important. It doesn't even matter if it's not 'your guy' that scores. If, lets say, you are playing left full back and a guy scores from the farthest place away from you, if you are farther up the pitch (towards goal) from him, it doesn't even matter where his actual defender is. You played him onside.

Make sense?

Jeff Jesser -> RE: European soccer (5/11/2019 10:49:38 AM)

Also, not sure if he's playing or not but keep your eye on Dortmunds Pulisic. That kid is the future (actually more like present) of US soccer. He's leaving Germany for Chelsea in the summer. It can't be understated how big of a move that is. It's by far the biggest move ever for a US born player.

Kind of, yes. Thanks!

Frustrating final months of the season but we still have hope. 5th secured, golden boot winner and one massive game left! GOYG!

I'm actually pretty optimistic about the upcoming season. Guendouzi will have some more experience, and some of the other young guys look promising, too. If they find some money to sign a talented defender, things will look even better.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: European soccer (5/16/2019 11:13:33 AM)

It sucks though that we don't have someone already in place to find that talent though. That should have been ironed out months ago.

SoMnFan -> RE: European soccer (5/29/2019 2:10:19 PM)

Arsenal and Chelsea going at it
Weird how they play these important games in the middle of the weekday.
