Congrats bg!

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (10/30/2017 3:39:55 PM)

Coaches poll is out. They've got MSU-Mankato ranked #1 narrowly above Shepherd at #2 (822 pts vs 820 pts) despite Shepherd collecting 22 of the 34 1st place votes and Mankato only getting 10 (IUP gets 2). This seems to indicate something shown in the reason D2 Polls where Shepherd has been ranked much lower. So it's likely that those voting Shephard #1 have MSU-Mankato #2, but those voting MSU-Mankato #1 have Shepherd down around #4 or #5. Given the bump they got in this poll, I suspect Mankato might be ranked #1 in the D2 poll as well, though it's possible that IUP could still have an edge in that poll.

Meanwhile, they've dropped Winona St all the way down to #18 and have Sioux Falls at #13, despite the fact that Winona St beat Sioux Falls just a few weeks ago. That really doesn't make any sense. I'm wondering if the D2 poll might have them closer together.

Looking back at the Mav's win, what really stood out to me was how strong the defense showed up. They forced 6 turnovers from Winona, despite the fact that Winona had been near the top in turnover margin. The offense didn't put up the big 40+ numbers it has been most weeks, but the defensive effort showed the Mavs can be a more complete team.

The Mavs (9-0) are hosting Wayne St. (5-4) this weekend. This is a potential trap game with the big match-up against Sioux Falls the following week. On offense, the Mavs top-ranked rushing attack should be able to move the ball against Wayne St's 9th ranked rushing defense, while the Mavs 9th ranked passing might also find some success against Wayne St's 15th ranked passing D. On defense, Wayne St's 3rd ranked passing attack may be a challenge for the Mav's 9th ranked passing defense, but their 11th ranked rushing will likely struggle against the Mav's #2 rush defense.

The other game I'll be watching is Thursday night, when Sioux Falls visits Upper Iowa. I'll try to catch part of the game on the local KCRG 9.2 broadcast. The Peacocks are having a decent season, and currently are 6-3. Their only losses are against teams near the top of the NSIC: MSU-Mankato, Winona St, and UMD. Upper Iowa features the #1 ranked passing defense, while Sioux Falls has the #1 ranked rushing defense. Assuming MSU-Mankato and Winona St win this week, a win by Upper Iowa over Sioux Falls would help help the Mavericks by preventing a possible 3-way tie scenario if Mankato loses at Sioux Falls in the season finale. If Upper Iowa wins, Sioux Falls would have 2 losses, and Mankato and Winona could end up tied at 10-1, but the Mavs would have the tie-breaker over Winona, making them the conference champions.

Mavs are hosting the Wayne St. Wildcats today. They've opened a commanding lead late in the 2nd quarter, now up 27-7.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 1:16:58 PM)

Wayne St with a quick scoring strike before half-time has tightened it up to 27-14.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 1:20:11 PM)

The audio on this NSIC feed is terrible. Broadcaster audio is delayed, but the live field audio seems to be in sync. There also seems to be other audio sources mixing in that aren't related to the game. They had problems with last weeks feed too.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 1:59:54 PM)

Mavs punt returner with a huge mistake to not call fair catch. Loses ball and Wayne St. recovers at 10yd line. Luckily the Mavs defense steps up to prevent a TD, but Wildcats kick a short FG to close it to 27-17 with 7:00 to go in the 3rd quarter.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:09:16 PM)

Mavs offense just cannot continue drives, and their defense can't seem to stop the wildcats on 3rd down. Wildcats driving for another score.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:11:43 PM)

Wayne St tacks on another FG. Score is now 27-20 with 1:28 left in 3rd qtr. The Wildcats have all the momentum in the 2nd half.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:12:44 PM)

MSU needs to stick with the run. They've been getting big gains, but they've been killing themselves on passing plays.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:15:00 PM)

Yikes. Mav's center just got hurt. They'll be down to their 3rd string center.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:17:01 PM)

End of the 3rd quarter. Mavs will have the wind at their backs in the 4th which might help with the passing and kicking.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:19:00 PM)

Stuffed again on a key 3rd down. Mavs get a couple 1st downs each time, but can't seem to keep these drives going at all.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:19:55 PM)

Mavs D really needs to step up on this drive.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:22:53 PM)

Mav's give up a huge pass for a TD. The defense is looking gassed.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:23:48 PM)

Tied at 27-27 with 12:23 to play. Definitely looks like they were overlooking Wayne St in this trap game. Not looking at all like they have in other games.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:26:24 PM)

Mav RB Taormina with a nice run. He's had a several nice runs in the game.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:27:15 PM)

Refs with some questionable calls and spots. Just like the NFL

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:28:32 PM)

QB keeper finally picks up a key 3rd down to extend this drive.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:29:59 PM)

Yes!!!!! Big throw to the TE for a TD!!!!!

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:30:44 PM)

Big statement drive by the Mavs goes the length of the field to re-establish the lead 34-27.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:34:29 PM)

Mavs D makes a big statement as well forcing a 3 and out.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:35:42 PM)

Wind really messing the punters. Mavs get the ball in good field position at their own 44.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:37:30 PM)

Mavs putting together a nice drive. Big pass and some runs puts the ball inside the wildcat 10 yd line.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:38:59 PM)

Beautiful mis-direction play action leads to a wide open pass for a TD.

bgdavis -> RE: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (11/4/2017 2:39:52 PM)

Now 41-27 with 5:10 to go in the 4th quarter. This is the Mavs team we're used to seeing.
