I bhope that UFC card lived up to your expectations. Do you think the Lesnar part was staged?

Some real good fights on ESPN, headlined by Regis Prograis. That dude is a killer. Oh, and Manny is fighting Lucas Mattysse, though its on the ESPN+ app. I'm wavering on purchasing it for the fight. I used my free trial for Bud Crawford's beatdown of Jeff Horn.

Worst PPV event ever.

Dana White needs to go away. He makes Don King look like a saint.

He's promoting personalities over abilities.

His bias is killing the sport. Hell, he's still talking shit about Woodley.

No surprise, Rousey and Lesnar are untouchable.

White should step away and focus on what he does best; gambling and cocaine.

I hate to sweep the Other Minnesota Sports section with such a meaningless question. But what exactly is the material inside a boxing glove? Has it changed over the years?

No question is meaningless! Boxing gloves used to be filled with lambswool or horse hair (I think). Now, they are a combination of pvc foam padding, but some companies use foam and horsehair combinations. That makes the glove heavier and last longer, and it also protects heads and hands better.

We've been know to spend days and many pages beating meaningless questions to death all over these forums.

A lot of pissed off fans at the Armory last night.

Harper's exit made Duran's No Mas look downright heroic.

What happened? Were you there?

twinsfan -> RE: Boxing Talk (8/27/2018 11:06:58 AM)

Apparently one of the fighters walked out as the match was beginning. Not paid enough.

You don't do that to ESPN
Not a good idea, son.

Jermain Taylor arrested for domestic abuse.

ESPN has reached an agreement with The Armory in Minneapolis to host 4 major televised boxing events per year.

GGG won that fight last night. It was close, but he pressed the action and won on points. Just my opinion.

Either I'm a complete idiot, which is certainly possible, or the MMA thread has a secret access code which I am not privy to.

Anyway, great and strange fight night. Derrick Lewis may be the most unconventional and unintentional entertaining fighter in the UFC.

Pettis/Ferguson was a bloody mess. Ferguson's boxing skills are second to none in the UFC.

Khabib, unfortunately, capped off an impressive, complete beatdown of McGregor with silly, perhaps criminal, behavior outside the octagon.

He took the shine off a masterful performance.

Loved watching mac getting cranked out, but the aftermath was awful. Khabib having to give up the belt might be the least of his concerns. He might lose his work visa, meaning that he couldn't fight in the States. UFC and MMA in general is starting to look more like pro wrestling every day.

Replied to you in MMA thread let me know if you can't see it.

Big one tomorrow night. Quigley vs Hernandez.

Quigley is undefeated and has an exciting Irish-brawl fighting style. Freddy Hernandez is no tomato can. He'll be aggressive early and try to knock Quigley out to take it out of the hands of the judges. I anticipate the crowd will be pro-Quigley, since he's the next big thing. Should be interesting

twinsfan -> RE: Boxing Talk (10/17/2018 8:41:10 PM)

California seems to host a lot of high quality fights.

twinsfan -> RE: Boxing Talk (10/20/2018 12:47:08 AM)

Caught the very end of the fight on Thursday night. The Irish won, but it was a good battle. Scorecards were whack. I'm taking the announcers' words on this, but there's no way it's a 9-point differential. That kind of thing always seems to happen when there's a perceived rising star vs a veteran fading into the sunset. From all accounts Hernandez put up a hell of a fight. Wish I had seen the entire thing.

Good fight. You're right about the judges cards, though. It was a lot closer than that.

On this day in 1974
Rumble in the Jungle
Historic. back when the heavyweights still ruled the world.
The first REALLY-HYPED events.
Young people would be shocked if they knew how much most of us cared about it back then.

I just laughed my ass off when I saw this one.

Ah yes. Ali employs the rope a dope to take the title from Foreman. I remember Foreman talking about it one night on Letterman's show. He said right before Ali knocked him out he said ... "Is that all you got George" ... and Foreman remembered thinking ... "Yep, that's about it". Ali was helped of course by the loosest ring ropes in the history of the sport. He could lean back far enough to steal pop corn from anyone in the first row.

Gotta disagree with the decision to stop the fight. The guy got up within 10 seconds and there was no more danger of "continuing" the fight, as time was up. But calling it a KO did make for a more intriguing storyline
