My boys in Denver are going off the rails getting Porter. I said hold your horses we’ll see.

Porter was an interesting gamble. Big guys with bad backs are always scary.

And while he's really skilled and a terrific scorer, he seems to be incredibly far up his own ass.

And a bad hip. I've had a bad impression ever since he switched his commitment to Mizzou when his dad went there as an assistant, on the heels of having transferred to Brandon Roy's team as a HS senior. It was all explainable, but amateur basketball is such a cesspool that it smelled bad. Add in two components of what could be a lifetime of health problems, and I see him as a huge risk. Even his highlights looked soft to me.

Like I'd mentioned, just a sense I get that he's very entitled. When he and his parents were introduced before the draft, the other attendees seemed gracious and were looking out for their mothers. Not Porter. He was leading the way and couldn't be bothered with checking on the safety of his mom and she navigated the stairs. I don't think he has the mental toughness and commitment to get better. I think he'll fold when he has to put in the proper work.

Elliot -> RE: 2018 NBA Draft (6/23/2018 2:46:48 PM)

A couple of other things working against Porter: his lexicon is chock-full of trite cliches. He doesn't seem genuine at all. Also, the Logo passed on him. Twice. Jerry West had two chances to draft him and he took a pass both times.

JT2 -> RE: 2018 NBA Draft (6/23/2018 9:14:08 PM)

Way more concerned about Porter's physical health than his immaturity.

A significant percentage of players hit the league immature and narcissistic. More times than not, that gets worked out.

Even West makes mistakes from time to time.

He was quite vocal, almost condescending, about Patrick McCaw being 1st round talent.
Obviously McCaw is not a finished product, but so far, I have seen very little to suggest that the entire league made a mistake not drafting him in the first round.

Again, the physical health issues might be a concern. A 19 year old young man in the NBA being immature is not surprising or uncommon.

Like most cocky young bloods, he'll get knocked around and beat up a little. He will be humbled by the physical nature of the NBA. We'll see how he responds. He'll grow up.

Sure he makes mistakes. Not many. I would certainly tend to view his two-time dismissal of Porter as a red flag.

So, you and Jerry have Robinson being a better NBA'er than Porter.

I'd like to wager on that.

That was the head scratcher for me from West.

I'm going with blissful denial on that one, with a healthy dollop of Robinson possibly being a legit NBA scorer. Didn't like the pick initially, but the more I read, the more I could squint and see the logic. It will be an interesting one to see play out. Everyone seems to say he's a good kid with a good work ethic and a desire to be good.

I wouldn't mess with a tall, skinny kid with a discectomy and a bad hip at 19 unless I felt really good about the recovery, his work ethic, and his resiliency. Those structures are part of a nexus that supports and stabilizes all movement and impact; the hip could already be a result of compensating for the back, which doesn't portend well for future issues with hamstring, groin, glute, hip, back, etc. His seeming delusional confidence could help or hurt, depending on what else he's made of.

bohumm -> RE: 2018 NBA Draft (6/24/2018 12:20:04 PM)

Have to admit also, though, that getting a thumbs down from two of the most knowledgeable basketball laymen I've come across does not help my optimism/denial.

A poster at Canis has been gathering Wolves draft reviews:

The kids in uniform. 2 things stand out.

1. Okogie is pretty jacked for a 19 year old.
2. I love that Okogie picked his draft position for his number.

JT2 -> RE: 2018 NBA Draft (6/26/2018 11:03:42 AM)

A lot of things about him remind me of Oladipo.

kgdabom -> RE: 2018 NBA Draft (6/26/2018 11:29:53 AM)

I think we are all pretty excited to get KBD. One thing that just hit me is that 2nd round picks are often a longshot just to make the team. Last year our first round pick was relegated almost exclusively to the G League. I believe there is zero concern about this late second round pick making the team and it is just a question of how significant his impact will be. That is amazingly fortunate.

Its a good comp.

This one is shooting a bit higher, but it would be a tremendous result. Game numbers are from their final college seasons.

Player A is Okogie. Player B was drafted last year....

If B is who I think it is, that is a really nice comparison.

Mitchell?

Okogie looks like a smaller version of Butler...

Okogie better in almost every measurable. Doesn't mean that much but still impressive.

You have the right coach, IMO.

I think Rivers was the coach of the year. I think he did his best coaching in his career last season.

He pieced stuff together all season long and they were relevant, despite the adversity.

Development exists.

Losing Jordan, one of my favorite unsung players, does hurt though.
