David Levine -> Wolves 2018 Game Day (10/3/2018 10:14:03 PM)

1st quarter thoughts:

Defense was atrocious. Teague was the biggest offender. Constantly out of position, lazy on close-outs and let's guys drive right past him. He puts our bigs in horrible spots.

Okogie popped again. His athleticism really stands out - even among other NBA players. His individual defense against Shai on the final possession was textbook.

Tolly looked good. He's going to take a ton of 3s this year - even if he has to manufacture them himself.

KBD hit a corner 3. I thought in Game 1 he looked like he struggled with the NBA line, so going to the corner was smart.

Rose did not look good on either end.

Wiggins looks more active tonight. Still missing FTs.

KAT started slow, but took over on offense late.

David Levine -> RE: Wolves 2018 Game Day (10/3/2018 10:16:11 PM)

Okogie moves his feet so well. He's just so smart on defense for just turning 20 2 days ago.

David Levine -> RE: Wolves 2018 Game Day (10/3/2018 10:20:53 PM)

Tyus/Okogie/KBD/Tolliver/Dieng are SO MUCH better on defense Teague/Rise/Wiggins/Taj/KAT.

David Levine -> RE: Wolves 2018 Game Day (10/3/2018 10:32:01 PM)

I want to see KAT (and even Wiggins) play in a different defensive system, because I really think Thibs' outdated scheme is just killing us.

I've lost track of how many times on a pick and roll, we've complete lost the roll man and he's been able to get uncontested to the basket.

David Levine -> RE: Wolves 2018 Game Day (10/3/2018 10:36:38 PM)

Okogie travels, Thibs screams and swears and yanks him from the game for Rose.

Then Rose travels. Nothing from Thibs.

No wonder there is a divide in the locker room...

David Levine -> RE: Wolves 2018 Game Day (10/3/2018 11:01:32 PM)

Tolly just provided the best (only?) defense on Gallo tonight.

David Levine -> RE: Wolves 2018 Game Day (10/3/2018 11:03:01 PM)

Teague has been frighteningly bad tonight.

David Levine -> RE: Wolves 2018 Game Day (10/3/2018 11:32:45 PM)

This is awful to watch. Thibs sucks all the joy out of the team. They never look like they enjoy playing.

Guys taking turns iso-ing, no movement...

Rose thinks he's Kyrie Irving, but he has no chance to make it all the way to the basket, so he just throws the ball up in the air and yells to try to get the foul.

Rose and Teague are a combined 3 of 18 with 3 assists and 4 turnovers.

Matt Lang -> RE: Wolves 2018 Game Day (10/4/2018 3:14:46 AM)

Why is Thibs still the coach?!

He's the only reason I watched.

How long before Thibodeau sucks all the joy out of the game for him?

Common theme, the longer you've been playing for Thibodeau, the worse you are as a defender.

Teague on a good night is just okay. Teague on a bad night is awful.

It looks like this will be our starting lineup for the regular season.

We will have the worst defensive backcourt in the league.

Any other coach and I would be a little excited about the upcoming season.

As it stands, I have very little desire to watch the games, let alone attend any.

I don't recall ever disliking a HC (any team, any sport) as much as I do Thibodeau.

lylej -> RE: Wolves 2018 Game Day (10/4/2018 7:31:57 AM)

18 Turnovers.....Tibs needs to go!
Same old shit as last year....
Trade Butler now....he is disrupting everything
about the Wolves....needs to stop.

Tibs needs to be fired....new thought process
is needed to change their entire game!

He's already better than Wiggins.

-He's 10x the defender. Maybe 20x.

-He makes meaningful, intelligent cuts to the basket.

-He hits his FTs (6/6 vs 3/7).

-He's fully engaged every second he plays.

Offense is still a work in progress and he gets a bit out of control, but he doesn't hurt us.

I want to see a Tyus/Okogie/Richardson/KAT/Whiteside line-up.

A given.

I'd even take Ryan Saunders if it meant the end of Thibs. I doubt he'd be any good, but I think we'd at least see the players having fun again.

Why do you think Ryan Saunders is not qualified? Is there a perception that the son of a good basketball mind can't have a good basketball mind too? Seems like it.

He’s never been a head coach anywhere. All his jobs have involved nepotism. He only has his job because Taylor required it of Thibs. Of the coaches sons we had, David Adelman was considered the up and comer and Ryan was considered Flip’s son...

David Levine -> RE: Wolves 2018 Game Day (10/4/2018 12:20:05 PM)

It’s impossible to overstate how much Rose hurts us. He’s emblematic of everything bad about Thibs’ offense and defense.

The biggest problem with Rose is he still thinks he can score. He has no explosion, no lift and no jumper. He can’t make it all the way to the hoop, and he’s NEVER been good at drawing fouls.

He’s just constant wasted possessions.

The guy led our team last year in both usage and shots per 36 minutes - in both the regular season and playoffs.

Add in that he was near the bottom of our roster in assist % (worse than Crawford!) and he’s just a negative every time he steps on the floor.

Saunders would likely be the worst NBA coach in history. I don't give a rat's ass about the players having fun. I guess they were having fun in 15-16 and we won 29 games. I guess they weren't having fun last year and we won 47. Go Thibs.

I don’t know if anybody could be as bad as Thibs

Anyone but Thibs at this point.

I'm so sick of him being an ogre on the sideline and sapping all the joy out of the team. Yes, winning is the most important thing, but I want to enjoy the games, not just the final score. I also like it when players appear to actually like playing together. This is a coach who actually got a T last year for yelling too much AT HIS OWN PLAYER. And then there is the double-standard. Last night Okogie is playing well and then he travels. Thibs lets out a really loud expletive, yells at Josh, yanks him from the game and pulls Rose off the bench to replace him (we was not about to check in before the stop in play). A few plays later, Rose travels, and not a peep out of Thibs. No wonder there is such a divide in the locker room.

His offense is an absolute mess.

I don't give a shit if we were the #4 offense, it was all built on a house of cards:
1. We played our starters WAY more than any other team. If you play your best players more than others, you should score more. You're also going to wear them down/out.
2. A big part of our offense being good was how little we turned it over. But that's because we barely passed the ball. It made us work harder than we needed to on most possessions, and when we did score it was more from special talent than scheme.
3. We also overcommited to offensive rebounding. It gets you a few extra possessions, but it absolutely kills your defense - especially in transition. Its a huge net loss. So much so that some teams have almost stopped going for offensive boards unless they have a player in the paint when the shot goes up.

Too much ISO, too much hero ball, and KAT was usually an afterthought.
1. We have a PG that can't throw an entry pass to save his life.
2. We have/had a superstar that won't pass to our best offensive player. In crunch time last year (5 minutes or less left in a game that is within 5 points), Butler had 1 assist to KAT the entire season.
3. KAT is a legit Top 5 offensive player in the league if you don't believe that, read this:

https://www.theringer.com/nba/2018/9/27/17910312/karl-anthony-towns-tom-thibodeau-wolves

And our defense was worse.

1. We're still running an archaic defense designed to give a big an open look from range. That was a great strategy when very few bigs could shoot. Now every team has multiple bigs that are 3 point threats. Thibs defense has morphed from one that made you shoot a shot you didn't want into one that allow syou to take the shot you most want.
2. We don't switch. In a league that basically is full of interchangeable players on offense, not switching things makes everybody's job so much harder.
3. We play like we've never seen a pick & roll before. No one ever picks up the roll man - I guess because they're so busy sticking to their own guy, they just let him have a free run to the hoop for easy baskets.

Right all those coaches we had winning 20-30 something games a year were better [&:].

That's like Gardy. Best example was Brendan Harris and Nick Punto. Other examples are Aaron Hicks and any of our other outfielders at the time. And Cuddyer when he first came up. He blamed a Radke HR on a Cuddyer strikeout in a previous inning. I bet Thibs is not as bad as Gardy.
