Naz Reid is a very good ball handler for a center and a solid 3 point shooter. I think he has a chance to make our team.

Has there ever been a draft when the powers-that-be outperformed the Twolves board?

There might have been somewhere.[;)]
Lets just hope we start improving this roster.

The consensus of this board I believe would have been standing pat or possibly even trading up and drafting Doumbouya. So if Doumbouya is better than Culver or the combination of Doumbouya and Saric is better than Culver the board wins again.

Some big boards had Culver as the 3rd best player in this draft.

He made a leap from frosh to soph season. I think the kid (being he has a great work ethic) could possibly develop in to an all star caliber player.

How about Amir Coffey?

Poor man's Jalen Rose. Poor shooter who will have to make a living overseas or in the G League.

Bill Jandro -> RE: 2019 NBA Draft (6/22/2019 7:33:52 AM)

For the Gophers not to get a player drafted 15 years and counting really shows how so few players make it to the NBA.

Or, how bad this program has been.

If Coffey had stayed his Senior year and improved, maybe he could have changed that. 2nd Rounder.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: 2019 NBA Draft (6/22/2019 8:41:23 AM)

Coffey has a ton of skill but still comes off as raw sometimes. He’ll make a living at basketball for at least a few years, perhaps not on this continent though. I predict he’ll someday get at least a cup of coffee in the NBA but is a long shot to progress past that.

Doubtful. He is better off playing professionally in Europe this year than a senior year here.

The consensus of the board seemed to me that Doumbouya was the best pick to possibly be available at 11 and maybe we should trade up for him. It's possible I got that wrong.

You don't have it wrong.

Sounds like Rossas was targeting Garland but Culver was a decent consolation prize IMO.

If we end up with Russell not getting Garland could turn out to be a blessing.

Once again it seems that the Wolves select one spot later than they need in order to get the franchise player. Maybe this time it will work in their favor. They are due.

Let me ask this question. Other than Kevin Garnett and Towns, (the first pick in the draft- he should be good) who is the best player that the Wolves ever drafted? We get excited every year about our draft picks, but they never seem to be special.

Matt Lang -> RE: 2019 NBA Draft (6/22/2019 7:38:19 PM)

Good answer. I had forgotten about them. Of course there were better players we could have drafted instead of them. Still, they were good.

Sam Vecenie:

Six of my favorite team drafts

6. Minnesota Timberwolves
— Gersson Rosas did a heck of a job in his first draft as a president of basketball operations. It was known throughout the NBA all week that the Timberwolves were looking to move up to try to augment their backcourt, and they did just that with the Phoenix Suns by moving up to No. 6 from No. 11 for just the price of Dario Saric. Saric is useful, but the team had to make a decision on paying him next summer that it may not have been all that comfortable with. And the difference from No. 11 to No. 6 in this draft was pretty large. They ended up taking the No. 5 player on my board, Jarrett Culver, who profiles extremely well next to Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins due to his ability to create shots, pass, defend, and play an unselfish, smart brand of basketball. In the second round, they took one of my favorite second-round prospects in Jaylen Nowell, who I’ll write about later on. Finally, on the undrafted free agency market, they signed Naz Reid to a two-way deal, a smart move that I think fits really well schematically with what they’ll look to do from a floor-spacing perspective as well as a defensive perspective in playing drop pick-and-roll coverage with David Vanterpool moving over from Portland. Overall, just some smart moves from Rosas that are a mix of solid in addition to being low-risk and high-reward.

Favorite second-round picks

6. Jaylen Nowell
— If there was one player that I wish I had ranked a touch higher on my big board immediately after filing it on Monday, it was Nowell. I just think his mix of three-level scoring and shooting ability — and skill for getting to his pull-up game — is going to translate well to the spaced-out floor of the NBA as a bench scorer. Good solid pick here for the Timberwolves, and I bet he makes this team and sees some minutes off the bench.

Best undrafted players (rank on my final big board)

2. Naz Reid (34)
— Reid’s athleticism was the main reason noted for his drop on draft night, something that is reasonable as it’s hard to see how he could currently stick with guards on the perimeter defensively. Per a source, he had a couple of chances to be picked in the 50s, but ultimately declined so that he could choose his spot, which he did immediately after the draft with Minnesota on a two-way deal. Minnesota is a spot that makes a lot of sense because they will particularly value Reid’s ability to shoot above the break 3s at the center position, and thus help space the floor for everyone else. This is an upside pick. Reid is super skilled, with the ability to dribble, pass and shoot from the center position at a high level. If the Wolves can focus in on his body and help him drop some of the weight that anchors him down currently, he has a genuine chance to stick in the NBA as an undrafted free agent.

This doesn't make any sense. Teams make their picks and then call the players. Few teams call a player and say, do you want to play for our organization. I find this very hard to believe.

Commenter:
Quick question - are you saying teams reached out to guys like Bowen and Reid ready to draft them, but were told not to? Thanks.

Sam Vecenie:
Yes. Players and agents hold a modicum of power over the process because they can take the non-guaranteed tender that every team has to offer a second round pick. Basically, if they take that player, and the player takes that tender, the team is not acquiring the asset under the terms it wanted

David Levine -> RE: 2019 NBA Draft (6/24/2019 2:42:36 PM)

Ben Rubin, The Stepien:

"Nowell is a player who is seriously underrated. He’s probably the best of this bunch and could potentially be a lot more than a bench player. Pac-12 played in perpetual zone and Nowell doesn’t seek bodies so didn’t get to the FTA a lot which hurts him by metrics, but he was excellent at realizing how to get his shot off in interior ranges, when to pull up and keep distance between himself and his defender, and while he’s not as good a prospect as Ray Allen or Donovan Mitchell, not as big as either nor quite as good and a stratosphere less athletic than Mitchell, I think if we gave him a fair shake, he might profile as a lottery level prospect or close to it."

(Comparing Nowell and Coby White) "They’re different players, with Coby having some more general O control, more seemingly diverse shooting skills and more passing chops, but look from a macro level at Coby White and Jaylen Nowell’s freshman boxscore stats. It’s impossible not to notice they’re nearly identical, then to take it a step farther and also note that Jaylen Nowell is significantly more athletic and a significantly better frame."

(Comparing Nowell to other perimeter players drafted in the 1st round) "Also, pretty sure Nowell is straight up a better prospect than Herro and KPJ, so with where you can get them in the draft, and considering where you can get them in the draft, it’s not close. Think Nowell would’ve been a year or two away from averaging over 20 ppg, 5 rpg, 4 ast and over a steal while shooting 50% from 2P, close to or better than 40% from 3P and 80% from the FT. Basically a Roy, Lillard, George Hill type season.

ruffenach -> RE: 2019 NBA Draft (6/24/2019 3:30:53 PM)

It is good that the Wolves are getting a lot of good reviews about their draft picks and the signing of their undrafted free agent. Normally, we don't get much respect from the media. This is a good sign that we are doing things right. They have done their homework well. We have a plan and we are executing it. Build around KAT.
