Not ecstatic with Speilman/Zimmer by any stretch, and in fact more inclined to move on. But the narrative that we can evaluate a QB on TV during the fourth quarter of the third exhibition game than they can seeing him play and interacting with him every day is ludicrous beyond words. They could still be wrong, but we're not seeing something they're blind to. In fact, it's entirely the opposite: they're seeing everything, 98% of which we're not privy to. We could still be right, but it's not an insight issue.

That's why I said we don't know for sure either way. I thought it would be nice to give him some reps with the number 2s in the preseason to maybe see a little more. Our guys didn't agree though. Going forward I'd like us to get serious about finding our QBOTF. I think we can all agree on that. At least I hope!

With all the injuries we've sustained in recent weeks, it feels like we're being held together with Elmer's Glue. We're a walking Mash unit.

National media is really down us. NO CHANCE at all. We are literally an afterthought.

If there's a game you can get up for, it's this one. No reason to come out and play like pansies. Zimmer has no reason to "Play it Safe." There should be no wasted plays. Playing it safe on defense. Playing it safe on offense. LOSERS Mentality.

Payton is gonna come out with the intention of going for the throat right away. If we WIMPY our way out on the field to start, it won't be pretty.

New Orleans can be had. Brees can be flustered and hammered. Zimmer needs to be Exotic and Chaotic.

Stefanski, are you looking for a head coaching gig? Here's your chance. Show up with REAL game plan. Make those teams looking for head coach take notice. Don't come out with some conservative shit plan and then watch the team the team fall behind by three TDs.

They need to let the Saints know right away they're in for a fight. Punch 'em in the mouth from the start.

What?

We are not a walking mash unit.

The starting offense is TOTALLY INTACT. That has to be a rare feat.

The starting defense is virtually intact, all present except the great Ben Gedeon. One could count the nickel as a starter, but even then we have only one-two of twelve out.

Will be interesting to see if Cook and Kendricks really are healthy, but we are far healthier than the norm.

I stand by what I posted.

Sure, some guys are playing, but they are a beat up bunch.

Hughes is out.
Alexander is out.
Kendricks is hurt.
Odenigbo is hurt.
Cook is beat up.
Mattison is hurt.
Weatherly is hurt.
Joseph is hurt.
Rhodes is hurting.

All key contributors. Hopefully, Thielen is full strength, because he hasn't been the same guy since he's been back. The training staff is doing a good job getting these guys back on the field. The rest last week really helped too.

That said, I still think this team can win this game tomorrow, if the coaching staff does their job.

Sloter is just a guy. If he were so great or had such potential he wouldn't have been sitting on the Cardinals fricking practice squad. He was pick up by Detroit because the magical arm of Jeff Driskel got injured. [&:]

We really need to give up this crowning of Sloter. It's gotten worse than Todd Bouman fer cripes sake [:-]

+1, Jeff. If sloter was so badass, he'd be starting and killing it with some team. He's not doing either.

A few pages back, our coaching staff is supposedly idiots for letting Zylstra go. We needed those 8 catches he had this year.

I said earlier this year the Pats just didn't look the same to me.

Now... lots of people have said NE reign was done over the years and eventually it was going to happen... I'm not omniscient here...

But they just didn't seem to have any offensive chemistry this year.
Edelman seemed like the only consistent weapon.
Sanu/Harry seem like they should be viable weapons but I never really saw the offense click.

Even in this game... at least 2x the Titans gave Brady the classic scenario to come back and extend the legend... but passes were slightly off... passes were dropped... I think it's possible the dynasty really is over.

Annnnddd.... they could come back next year and prove me totally wrong.

It's very possible Sloter is just another guy.

But you can't tell me he didn't show enough in preseason to put some effort into developing.

Who are we developing at QB exactly.

Mannion... seriously...

You have ZERO chance to unearth a Tony Romo or Kurt Warner or Brad Johnson or whoever when you jettision a QB who at least did something with his time on the field.

Finding a QB on a rookie contract is a HUGE advantage in being able to compete.

Would be nice if the Vikings had someone in the wings with a chance of being something.... maybe Browning is that guy... would have liked to seen more from Sloter.

If Sloter looks like a gamer against 3-4 stringers / a lot of guys that aren’t even on teams at this point ... so what, he’s no different than 5 bazillion other physically-talented gamers out there out of the nfl (most of whom atleast did it in college on actual game days).

If you can’t handle the complexity of the position or playbook or gameplan, or improve after several years in getting the offense lined up - you cannot commit to that player long term period. Sloter was given every chance in the world to fill in some important positional gaps and he just didn’t get it done ... according to this staff.

Mannion is a different animal. Besides looking for developmental projects, you are also looking for a smart coachable back-up that you think has the mental toughness to step in under duress and perform ... and give everybody else a chance to perform.

I take great issue with our QB situation ... and even more with our developmental approach. I thought Sloter was a move in the right direction - that we had committed to aggressively developing young talent but - with seem to have fallen back into the ‘sign a bland but adequate back-up and pick through the draft leftovers for a project that might not be horrible’. Sucks. We should be drafting QBs every other year or atleast as much as we draft kickers.

Unless Cousins miraculously figures out how to overcome the self-defeating perfectionism he chastises himself with every big meaningful game, we are headed for a very painful regime change and QB overhaul, sooner rather than later.

How playbook versed are the 3rd stringers in a preseason game?

Or in the huddle is the qb drawing up plays in the dirt like a pickup game at the Y?

That's where I stand on Sloter, it can't be everybody being fragile as to why Sloter isn't a starter or even a backup. Remember he was the odd man out in Denver as well when they had Osweiler, Siemian and the immortal Paxton Lynch.

But I will admit he looks the part in those limited preseason snaps.

I may be wrong but Sloter had a full offseason with our current qb coach (in Denver) - and two off / full seasons with us. If the light bulb didn’t turn on, you move on.

It might not be Sloter ... it may be our coaches or their ‘system’ or wiring. I don’t know. I never saw his fish eyes in practice or saw him drooling in meetings, so I will simply have to take the staff’s version of events (behind the scenes).

If it was just Spielman, Zimmer, and Stefanski doing the evaluating ... but it was not. It was also Kubiak Sr (and Klingsbury).

Treadwell, Kalil, Ponder, etc. are all organizational failures. When I say take them at the word, I do not mean assume they are correct. I do mean that we have to assume that Sloter was not fitting in, in some big way, with the coaching.

I think it's a reasonable take that Sloter didn't mesh here and will be nothing more than a backup. However, I don't agree with the narrative that he couldn't make it in Denver, or was on the practice squad in AZ as proof of it.

Paxton Lynch was hurt (shoulder) to start that season and was going to miss only 2-3 games. Broncos did not want to put him on IR. They resigned Osweiler so they had someone who knew system/depth. Sloter was a UDFA at that point - no way he could be back up. It simply became a numbers game there. Elway then got in a bidding war with Vikings and another team to sign Sloter after he was cut.

People forget that teams tried to trade for Sloter while he was with us.

I thought his interview seemed legit. I believe Sloter was told he would have a chance to battle for second string and then was not given that chance on the second day of OTAs.

We'll see how he does in Detroit with a full off-season to learn their offense.

You can only take advantage of the opportunities you've been given. I think he's done that. I don't think we know one way or another if he's actually good. He may be the type that excels in gameplay. He may not play well against starters. Who knows. I'm pretty sure he's a better player than Mannion who probably shouldn't be on anybody's roster at this point.

Remember when James Harrison was a nobody - until he was a somebody? Adam Thielen? My previously mentioned Kurt Warner, Jake Delhomme, and Tony Romo - what a bunch of LOSERS! - until they weren't.

What is the undrafted guy Anthony Harris doing starting? And Theilen and Diggs? I thought Zimmer didn't allow that.

Agree with all. I'm not saying Sloter might not be good, or that our personnel decisions are beyond reproach. While it may be true that they screwed him on Day 2, something may also have happened in the interim that told the coaches Sloter was not going to do the work to be ready---or did not have the wherewithal---to provide a viable option. I don't accept that they just don't get football as a line of reasoning.

Cannot believe we had to sit thru an entire hour of whining by Saints fans about how cursed they are.
Can we not have one thing to call our own?

You’ve WON a Super Bowl, you bunch of whining jackasses!

Amazing how quickly they climbed the ladder of hate-able franchises.

Time to extend Cousins and get some cap relief.

He isn’t Brees Rodgers or Brady but he is just as good as any after that group.
