Third-and-goal at the Saints 4-yard line: Cousins lofts game-winning touchdown pass to Kyle Rudolph.

Truth be told, the Vikings actually had a different play call in the huddle than the one that ultimately worked.

But when the Saints showed an all-out blitz (Cover 0) that the New Orleans defense brought, Cousins changed the play to include a fade pass to one of his biggest targets.

“We actually had a different play called, but if they zeroed us, we were going to throw the fade,” Zimmer said.

The Saints brought the pressure while Cousins looked left and fired a pass that now lives in Vikings lore.

Cousins explained when he knew he was going to target No. 82.

“After the ball was snapped and they all blitzed,” Cousins said. “They brought Cover 0 and the ball’s got to get out. You can’t hit it, if it doesn’t go out.”

“I didn’t feel under duress. I knew it was Cover 0, so the ball gets out so quick so they don’t get home,” Cousins added. “It was a great play by Rudy. He went up and grabbed it and kept his feet it, which is a big challenge on that play.”

Some of the players who were former Vikings, but came back to the team seemed to help today. There was Sendejo (in hindsight it was a good move to in effect trade him with our rookie sixth rounder) There was Marcus Sherels who I think is underrated with what he does on stabilizing our punt returns and then there was Shamar Stephen who I saw make several nice plays I just checked and he was in on two tackles before coming out of the game late. I hope that he will be ok for next week. One player that almost got away, but stayed with the team (Anthony Barr) showed up big time for today's game. He was in on 8 tackles and at least a couple of them were on Michael Thomas on short passes.

Smith may not have had his best season, but today he was in on 11 tackles. Everson Griffen showed up big. We needed him to with Odenigbo not being 100%. I was surprised to see Odenigbo out there doing his best out there. I really like him and I hope that he will be better next week.

New Orleans has a really good punt and kick returner. ( Deonte Harris) He's going to the Pro Bowl and I can see why. He could have been the difference in the game if the Saints kicker had made that end of the first half field goal. We dodged a bullet there. I hope that the Vikings can find a new return guy next year like him.

I would be remiss not to mention Kyle Rudolph. I was really vocal in the preseason that we should part ways with him and that he was overpaid. He earned his money this season and was huge in today's game. I also thought that the offensive line had one of their better games today giving Cousins more time to throw. Cousins is the kind of quarterback who has to have time, but he can be one of the better quarterbacks in the game when he does. Obviously I don't know what will happen next week, but I'm going to say that Cousins earned his big paycheck this season. He kept his poise in a really difficult environment and didn't turn the ball over once. That was a difference today too.

What do you do with a guy like Hill when his contract comes up?

He doesn’t play enough to pay big money but will he command big money and force you to lose regular players to stay under cap.

Are you talking about Taysom Hill? It looks like he will be a restricted free agent this off-season. I do believe that teams will offer him big money. The Saints use him very wisely and get the most out of him. My hunch is that he will try to stay there in the Bayou because he is happy there.

Or are you talking about Holton Hill? He is still on a cheap rookie contract for one more season, but there is a good possibility he will be a starter next year and get paid in 2021. I'm really glad he's on our team right now with all of the injuries at corner. I don't know if Mackenzie Alexander is going to stay with the team next year. He is the one corner that I would try hardest to keep, but conceivably we could lose three corners this off-season. I'm glad that free agency comes before the draft. I could see the Vikings selecting a cornerback early in the draft. (first or second round) With today's victory our draft status is being pushed farther back. It feels weird that the Patriots will select before the Vikings. That hasn't happened in a really long time.

Lot of credit to spread. Sendejo and Rhodes deserve some. Rhodes gutted it out and one "communication mistake" shouldn't overlook his effort. Deserves some credit after being the second most maligned guy on the team.

I had missed this. It would have been tough to call, but some kind of penalty should have called. (player running on the field when the play was still in progress) I don't know. It didn't affect the play, so maybe it was a good no call. What do you think?

That's great.
Rudy has made some HUGE plays this year. So glad we kept him.

Actually the draft order is still by regular season order, other than the 2 SB participants

That used to be the case. I'm not sure when it was changed, but here is the new way draft order is determined.

Teams that did qualify for the playoffs are assigned draft slots 21-32. The order is determined by the results of the previous year’s postseason play:

The four teams eliminated in the wild card round pick in slots 21-24 in the reverse order of their final regular season records.
The four teams eliminated in the divisional round pick in slots 25-28 in the reverse order of their final regular season records.
The two teams that lost in the conference championships pick in the 29th and 30th spots in the reverse order of their final regular season records.
The team that lost the Super Bowl has the 31st pick in the draft.
The Super Bowl champion has the 32nd and final spot in each round.

3rd down passing:

Cousins:
Dopbacks: 14
Comp-Att: 9-12
1st Downs: 8
Pass Yards: 109

Brees:
Dopbacks: 10
Comp-Att: 5-8
1st Downs: 2
Pass Yards: 17

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/6/2020 2:10:56 AM)

NFL Rewind:

Brees was pressured 10 times (tied for his 2nd most this season)

Vikings sent 4 or fewer pass rushers on 8 of Brees' 10 pressures

Hunter and Griffen combined for 8 QB pressures

I think today's game should give Zimmer 100% job security going into next season. They established the run and then used play action with success. The repeated unsuccessful runs to the weak side in the 4th quarter weren't too impressive but moving Griffen and Hunter around on defense completely baffled Brees and Payton. Was great to see the innovation on D and the mostly smart playcalling on O.

Agreed. Love the defense wrinkle. I was sketical about Senjedo as slot but the defense played lights out - other than containing number 7.

Offense made enough plays. Also hate the toss sweeps to the short side of the field. Shortens the stretch and cut back option.

Enjoyed this one more than any in a long time. I was in a zen place and didn't get worked up until Thielan caught the bomb to the 2 yd line.

way too much to the short side - cook/mattison need space to pick their hard cuts north....

I think what it says is that Zimmer found a way to gameplan when we were left for dead. Kudos to him. There's no telling what next game brings, but our game -planning allowed us to live another day.

We found a way to basically shut down Drew Brees with Rhodes playing basically full time CB and Sendejo as our Nickel.

Props to Zimmer and Edwards.

How scary was that?

Bit surprised by that. I don't recall seeing Kearse on the field.

I made the mistake of turning on ESPN. They're seriously trying to make the game an officiating issue? Hahahahahaha! I love it! Expect another rule change.

If you want to say it was illegal contact and then OPI, I could listen to that. Offsetting at worst.

But, to just say it is OPI, ESPN is looking to play up the "bad non call" angle from last year.

Agreed. I saw hand fighting initiated by the Saints defender first. I see it as a perfect no call. I thought the officials called a fair game. There were some poor moments on both sides. We won it fair and square! Took the ball in OT and smoked em! It was very refreshing.

Agreed all around. One of the better officated games all year.

Rudy TD was a good no call with hand fighting from both players.

Impressed with the Saints fans. Obv bummed about the loss but only a few fans saying they were cheated by the refs and they get shouted down quickly.

They just raised a notch or two in my opinion of them.

Adam Thielen: seven catches, ALL for first downs, including four on third down.

(Sam Ekstrom on Twitter)

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/6/2020 6:25:03 AM)

2nd half Saints had to go man to man to stop Cook on the line. Cousins and Thielen took advantage. Congrats to the Vikings, coaches, organization and most of all, the fans. 🏈
