I asked the question to Matthew Coller and he answered with this:

Happened because they have perfect personnel for it with Kendricks/Barr/Smith/Harris... Kittle is a different kind of monster though

After Sunday's surprising (to me at least) effectiveness, maybe you stay in nickle with Sandejo and dedicate him to covering Kittle. Smith is not good in pure coverage and Harris is needed at the back end more (with Smith), and the LBs might not be fast enough (like most LBs vs Kittle). Dip into the magic dust again with Sandejo?

I'd like to see Holton Hill and Kearse get more playing time and I think they'd be useful to add to the mix in covering Kittle. They need to bracket him and take Garrapolo's security blanket as much as possible. Both Hill and Kearse have made big plays when given a chance. If Hill can stop using marijuana and other drugs, he could easily be our best CB next year or even right now, he's shown flashes that he's capable of that.

Incredible that Kittle was a 5th round pick. Turned out a bit better than Bucky Hodges and MyCole Pruitt.

2017 season: Rookie year
On May 4, 2017, the San Francisco 49ers signed Kittle to a four-year, $2.69 million contract that includes a signing bonus of $298,287.[28]

Throughout training camp, he competed against Garrett Celek, Vance McDonald, Logan Paulsen, Blake Bell, and Cole Hikutini for the job as the starting tight end. Head coach Kyle Shanahan named Kittle the starting tight end to start the regular season.[29]

Kittle made his NFL debut in the 49ers' season-opener against the Carolina Panthers and caught five passes for 27 yards in a 23–3 loss.[30] He caught his first NFL reception on a 13-yard pass from Brian Hoyer on the first drive and was tackled by Panthers' safety Mike Adams.[31] On October 8, 2017, Kittle made seven receptions for 83 yards and his first NFL touchdown during a 26–23 overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts.[32] During a Week 9 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, Kittle caught three passes for 27 yards, before leaving the 20–10 loss with a leg injury.[33] He was inactive due to the injury and missed the following game against the New York Giants.[34]

Kittle finished his rookie season with 43 receptions for 515 yards and two touchdowns in 15 games.[35]

Cousins throws during the Saints game. He really did come up big.

https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1214366039053500416?s=20

So many throws that were legit. The one to Diggs on the 1 yard line where he rolled out, tucked it to run (took a few steps) then saw diggs - on the move throw beating the DB by a split second.

We didn't see off schedule plays like that last year.

Nothing 'robotic' about that at all. There were at least 3 defenders nearby and it took a lot of confidence in both himself and Diggs to make that throw (if I remember correctly).

The Niners have some players with explosive speed and big play capabilities. Mostert is one. If the Niners go with three receivers plus Kittle and Mostert, I'm not sure we have enough speed in the secondary. I hear that the Niners do like to throw to their running backs. Our linebackers have to come up big. Strength vs. strength.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/8/2020 10:53:04 AM)

It would be interesting to see Rhodes on Kittle for passing downs.

I wonder how the Niners offensive line will hold up to our pass rush. Will our DE's continue to rush from the inside?

Sanders, Kittle, and Samuel scare me the most (WR)....Saints couldn't throw that many dangerous receivers out at once and we were burnt by Hill and their KR....

I'd like to see Holton Hill and Kearse get more playing time and I think they'd be useful to add to the mix in covering Kittle. They need to bracket him and take away Garappolo's security blanket as much as possible. Both Hill and Kearse have made big plays when given a chance. If Hill can stop using marijuana and other drugs, he could easily be our best CB next year or even right now, he's shown flashes that he's capable of that.

If that were going to happen, you would have thought it would happen in the Saints game.

I really thought Hill/Kearse were the future...

For whatever reason, and perhaps completely valid, they haven't been able to gain Zimmers trust.

drviking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/8/2020 12:00:12 PM)

agree on Kearse, it appears he will not be used until the last man standing, he wont be back next year

Hill, i think is in the future, Zim is not one to 'rush' young players, our 1st rounders have trouble finding playing time, let alone our UDFAs

drviking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/8/2020 12:05:37 PM)

it was a FUN game

and it was great doing it again to the Saints/Payton, we still are not even, IMO

I dont see a way we win this weekend, however, grass, emotional win, travel, short week, excellent team, etc

It was a great run this year, and I have enjoyed sharing it with my talkvikes bros (and sis), i know I dont post as much as i used to, but I still read almost every post in the Vikings section

I think we just used our "one time" this year, and it was a very good time to use it!

Whatever happens, its been quite a year.

drviking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/8/2020 12:06:12 PM)

Sawft, broken down X, and sendejo.....

Defense starts at the.....

drviking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/8/2020 12:09:00 PM)

one thing that i hope we consider is investing more in offense and letting zimmer 'coach up' the defense. He had pretty good defense in Cinci without having 1st round CBs

can he get production out of later rounders or vets?

invest some more 1st rounders in OLine?

Ragnarök -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/8/2020 12:25:15 PM)

Antoine Winfield Jr. announced on Wednesday that he will be giving up his remaining eligibility at the University of Minnesota in order to enter the professional ranks.

The younger Winfield is a safety rather than a cornerback, but he shares the consensus All-American status that his father carried with him out of the collegiate ranks. He had 83 tackles, seven interceptions 3.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and two forced fumbles for the Golden Gophers in 2019.

Good post. Last week was the pinnacle of the season. Love to reach a new one this week.

I could see us blitzing more against Garropolo. He will throw into coverage. We need to make INTs when given the chance.

Thielen injured in practice today. Supposedly an ankle injury. However Rosen was at practice, and he thinks it was maybe the hamstring.

At the end of the season and with a short week of rest I'm not sure why they are practicing hard today.

Diggs is still sick. Could be running a bad crew of receivers. Cook will have to carry the load.

Were they practicing that hard? Teddy destroyed his knee on routine drop back.

I have no problem seeing us win this week, but if Thielen doesn't play or is limited than I start to doubt. With Cousins, Cook, Mattison, Diggs, Thielen, and Rudy we should be able to light them up. I think our D is good enough to keep them in check.

Adam Thielen (ankle) was a limited participant for Wednesday's practice.
Thielen wasn't listed on Tuesday's 'estimated' report and Wednesday's designations weren't released in time for the media to ask coach Mike Zimmer about them. ESPN's Courtney Cronin adds that Thielen sustained the injury mid-practice, so perhaps Zimmer will add to that on Thursday. With Stefon Diggs (illness) absent from practice, Minnesota's receiving corps could be dwindled down to Bisi Johnson and Laquon Treadwell pending the aforementioned duo's availabilities.
