I agree. What seemed like a position of strength is now looking really suspect. Hughes can't stay healthy, Hill's behavior is unpredictable (we already knew and gambled), Rhodes looks to have aged 5 years in 2, Alexander is just so-so, and Waynes is surprisingly one of our best (but certainly not shut down).

Can't rely on Hill. Keep him, play him, support him, but there has to be a Plan A that doesn't rely on him.

Read the 49ers were full of coaches who had years of experience with Kubiak's system. So they methodically took it apart.

10 first rounders since 2013:

Bad luck injury wise:
Sharrif Floyd - botched surgery, out of football
Teddy - devastating knee injury
Cook - knee
Hughes - knee

The by-most-accounts busts:
Patterson
Treadwell
The traded pick for Bradford.

Leaves Barr, Waynes, and so far Bradbury who are viable starters surviving more than a season w/o injury.

Wasn't Cook a 2nd rounder? Was H Smith a trade up first rounder? When Was the LT drafted (already forgot his name)?

Interesting list. Jury is still out on Hughes and Bradbury. Floyd and Teddy looked good before injury. Patterson all world special teams, pls some gadget players. If you ask Zimmer - Barr is a stud. I thought Wilson should have replaced him. Waynes was a top 12 pick. Above average but under-performed compared to draft slot.

You're right about Cook. Smith was 2012. Kalil is the guy you were thinking of, back with Smith.

As well they knew Kirk Cousins very well too...

The Niners are saying they fear Rodgers this week, none of that talk week before unfortunately...

and the media agrees...

Regardless of the mindset, the 49ers will be facing a much different quarterback than Kirk Cousins this week. Cousins is a statue that crumbles into dust under pressure. Rodgers is the chicken in Rocky II, before Rocky gets in shape.

49ers 37 Pukers 8

Aaron Rodgers 20/33 104

Yeah, I'm sure the 49ers are shitting their pants. [&:]

Rodgers is more like Apollo Creed in Rocky IV.

Anthony Harris has a PFF WAR (wins above replacement) figure of 0.639, making him more valuable than any other non-QB on the #Vikings roster in 2019

See why he is easily the best safety on the free agent market

The teams the 9ers lost to this season all had one thing in common. A very mobile qb.

However, Rodgers isn't nearly as mobile or elusive anymore.

Kept thinking that myself. Kubiak has laid the work for a system but Shanahan has taken elements of it and tweaked it. Shanahan literally grew up in that system.

Coupled with how rigid Cousins is, they knew exactly where to attack the scheme and know that Kirk wouldn't go off script.

Think the game will be different this time around. The 49ers are the best team in the NFC but as I mentioned they're a terrible matchup for us. The Packers on the other hand can hold up better in pass pro and Rodgers can make plays off script. Still think the 49ers win but I'd lean on taking the Packers +7.5.

This week, I like the Niners.

Otherwise I kind of hate them.
They were the Patriots before the Patriots were the Patriots.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/17/2020 11:40:24 AM)

I have a hard time seeing GB winning this game, but strongly suspect they will be ahead at halftime, maybe with a little help with calls and non-calls from the refs.

I like GB+ 4, 1st half bet, or 4 1/2 if you can get it.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/17/2020 11:42:49 AM)

I hope the Vikes can keep Patterson for the DL, and whomever it was that coached the OL.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/17/2020 11:47:36 AM)

Had the refs called OPI on Rudolph against the Saints, and the Vikes lost that game, probably would have gotten Zimmer fired.

Instead we are stuck with mediocrity at the HC position, and the same at the QB position. When Cousins threw the INT trying to hit Theilen, I thought at the time that was textbook mediocrity, of not making the clutch throw. The odds catch up to you, and he will likely eventually make a throw like that.

Maybe I am being too hard on Cousins ? We'll see how Rodgers does, a somewhat similar QB, does against the same defense this week.

Considering that Thielen took all the blame for totally stopping his route, yeah, you're likely being too hard on Cousins...

The Packers OL will hold up better Than the Vikings OL. It's a much more complete OL.
Still see Frisco winning.

My gut feel is the Packer OL will look better than the Vikes OL did, combo of talent and Rodgers helping... but then again, they didn't the last go around... and Bulaga might be down as well.

Flip to the Bears:

Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter
Big changes to Bears coaching staff: former Jaguars’ OC John DeFilippo is being hired as their QB coach, QB coach Dave Ragone is being promoted to passing game coordinator, and Bill Lazor is being hired as OC, per league source.

Grasping straws to get something out of Trubisky

It always amazes me how far teams will go to cover up mistakes made instead of moving on from them. If they put as much effort into finding the right players as they put into covering up for bad picks I have a feeling things would work out much better.

Apply this to us. We actually bring back Treadwell. We think Sherels is "solid". We brought in Newman, at 41 years old, hoping to shore up our secondary. Sendejo too. Iloka?

Now Zimmer's son is going to get a promotion. Earned? What are we doing?

We have a philosophy of football that is incorrect. We use a third round pick on a back up RB. I know you guys love Mattison. Is he better than Boone?

Any chance we could have moved up just a bit (instead of trading down) to land Metcalf?

We're not interested in WR's. We think two is enough.

Your fancy, modern style of football is wrong. I'll show you.

We are going to run and stop the run. How did that work for us?

Take a guess how good our running game was the last half of the season.

Would you be surprised to find out that Cook averaged 3.3 yards per carry the last 8 games he started, including the playoff game at New Orleans?

Where was Mattison against the 49ers? 3rd round pick that everybody loves, but can't contribute on a win now team. Again, why wouldn't we be more concerned about actually having a 3rd WR?

Run first, stop the run. What happens when your philosophy fails? Fire the assistants, promote your offspring.

Where were Mattison, Diggs, Thielen, Smith, Cook, Rudy, Johnson?

Behind an OLine that got demolished.

GB is in NCFCG because they want to establish the run and play good defense. Same with Tennessee and SF.

The philosophy isn't bad, the guys that you need to carry out the philosophy are.

Mark, what I'm saying is, when your focus is on adhering to a single-minded philosophy, and you construct your roster accordingly, what happens when a good opponent takes away your strength?

The 49er's don't have a RB as good as ours. Most reasonable people would agree that our QB is better. When opponents contain their run, they have Kittle, Samuel, Sanders, Bourne and Goodwin. What do we have?

Our roster is constructed for failure against good teams. What happens when our run gets stopped? We literally have two NFL WR's on our roster.

It's easy to just continue to blame the OLine. Suddenly everybody thinks they suck.
Did they all of a sudden forget how to run block? No, good opponents sold out hard to contain our run game. How did we counter? We struggled, because our philosophy, and roster construction is stubborn and rigid.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/17/2020 10:56:30 PM)

Rookie tight ends don't usually do too much. Hopefully Irv Smith will pick up his game to another level next season. We can see with the Niners what a dynamic tight end can mean. Still, I would assume the Vikings will keep fishing for a young wide receiver. Perhaps one can be had via free agency. I don't know.

With our lead footed quarterback I would prioritise the offensive line again, though.

JT2 -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/17/2020 11:11:02 PM)

We're fine with "solid". Even though our definition of solid is best suited to yesterday.

The football experts lauded Deonte Harris on his route running. Are you kidding me? He's a punt returner. And he's really good at that.
Why would anybody think he's a great route runner? Any idea how many passes he caught this year? He couldn't get on the field as a WR, and that's with Smith missing the majority of the season.

Not only are we not interested in WR's, we can't even find a bad one, but also happens to be explosive in the return game.

We want "solid".

You've heard of Gronkowski and Hernandez, right?
