Trading up doesn't seem to make sense for the Vikings this year. They need bodies at multiple positions and the draft seems deep in some of those positions. I can see multiple trade downs as a more likely scenario.

Just like BPA vs Need trading up vs trading down is on a case by case basis.

Call it just a hunch then. I'd be very surprised if Spielman traded up in this draft. And equally surprised if he didn't trade down at least twice.

Yeah I can’t remember looking forward to a draft like this EVER as well.

Sheesh, get our minds off for just a few hours is needed.

And Ratings could be Super Bowlesque.... Kidding of course but should be the highest ever by far for a draft.

Highest ratings with probably the lowest quality.

I could do without the fluff pieces to fill time. Give me the picks, show some highlights, maybe an interview, on to next pick.

SF wants to trade 13 and 31 to get more picks.

22, 25 and 89 for 13 and 31.

#13 CJ Henderson

#31 Reagor, Mims

(2) DE Darrell Taylor

(3) Trent Williams

or

#13 Ruggs, Jeudy, Lamb

#31 Gladney, Johnson, Terrell

(2) Madubuike, Blacklock, Gallimore, Davis

(3) Trent Williams

I'm guessing that if we trade up with the Niners it will be their second trade down. That's a long way to go for the Vikings and I don't believe your offer adds up enough for the Niners to accept. I could be wrong. I didn't do the math.

Edit: I just did the math and the Vikings would have to offer both of their third rounders and also a sixth just to get close. So they would give up two firsts and two thirds and get one first and have two seconds, but skip the third round. I mean, teams have given up more than that to move up in the first round. The first round is really expensive territory.

Exactly the two key points why a trade up is unlikely.

Deep draft + multiple needs = stand pat or trade down.

When we were at 7 and McKinnie was the consensus favorite... we pick him and he walks through a door filling the entire frame. Yippee.

But watching Moss slide and then picking him was the ultimate.

And Spielman NEVER stands pat, so that answers the first option.

Yeah watching Moss tumble was awesome, we were pretty well set at WR with Carter/Reed, but taking a chance on purely the most talented PLAYER ever as it turned out was a huge high. Was screaming for Warren Sapp before that. 😡
I actually started looking forward to the Vikes taking a falling player every year, Percy Harvin was another temporary bonanza, as was about to be stud Sharrif Floyd before the botched knee surgery.

That’s why I hold out hope beyond our obvious needs I’d love if a guy like Kinlaw dropped to us even though we need WR, CB more.

Hoping Beyond hope that Henry Ruggs falls to us. We need a field stretcher in a perfect world.

3 years before that?

The Happy Norseman -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (4/21/2020 1:02:14 PM)

I'm hoping that the combination of an unusual online draft, combined with RS and Zims contract status, equates to some epic wheeling and dealing by RS come draft night.

Best draft ever:

1.Jordan Love is still on the board when we pick. It sounds like there would be a good chance that the Saints, NE or Indy would want to trade up to grab him. In a perfect world it's the Colts. They get our first and fourth, we get both of their 2nd round picks (34) and (44). They overpay in this scenario, but they have to so they can jump into the 1st and get their QBOTF.

2. We know Cleveland has a strong interest in Harris. Spielman drafts Xavier McKinney (S) at 25 after confirming Cle will trade their 3rd rd pick for Harris. Vikings now have 3 second round picks and 3 third round picks.

3. RS uses one of his 3 third round picks (plus Reiff) to trade for Trent Williams.

At this point the Vikings would have their upgrade at LT, potentially have little to no drop-off at S, and save 11 million bucks in the process. Plus 3 second round picks and 2 third round picks to devote to CB, OG, WR, DT, DE.

Post draft new Vikings:

Williams (LT)
1. Xavier McKinney (S)
2. Jaylon Johnson (CB)
2. Brandon Aiyuk (WR)
2. Neville Gallimore (DT)
3. Robert Hunt (OG)
3. Darrell Taylor (DE)

Will it happen? Unlikely. But it sure would be fun to watch.

Unrelated but... there was the USFL or closure. We got Anthony Carter (thru a trade with Miami) and Gary Zimmerman out of that.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (4/21/2020 1:38:29 PM)

That would be cool to watch unfold....

Speaking of trades unfolding, it looks like total chaos in the 5th, 6th, and 7th as RS trades and then before it's even reported he's traded the pick we rec'd!

I remember the recent trade ups to the bottom of the first for CPATT and Smith...those were both exciting. The Ponder draft pick may have been the most boring draft for me in recent history.

There is a flaw in your logic.

Just a little one.

We wouldn't save 11 Mil. Yes that would come off the books if Harris is traded, but we would be adding MORE payroll when we acquire Williams.

Im not sure, but I believe in his scenario he is trading away two large contracts in Rieff and Harris and gaining one in Williams. Not sure what Williams will cost, but I doubt it is the same as Rieff and Harris combined cap hits.

That's correct. Under the tag, Harris is currently costing the team 11.4mil. Trading Reiff saves the team just under 9mil. I don't know what Williams will cost but his agent quoted $16mil a year. That's the problem with only trading one of our players and trying to take on Williams new contract. The team would be taking on an additional cap hit of between 5 to 7mil a year. That's tough considering the need for additional players via FA.

RE: Griffen – nothing has changed but the language from both sides is a little more compromising.

I'm putting these in the draft thread because I am hoping – given nobody has signed him yet – that we can fit him in somehow for one year and eliminate one of the many draft holes we are trying to fill in 2020.

So why did Everson Griffen put out a statement last month that he was gone from the #Vikings if it's not 100 percent certain he's gone? Source said he wanted to get the word out to teams that he was available. He remains unsigned.
