I’m still amazed the pass people give Spielman

He went out and signed Kirk Cousins to big money on the premise that he was the missing piece
Yeah, he hit on Jefferson and has found a couple diamonds in the rough like Hunter and Dantzler
But his overall body of work has been mediocre, including many questionable extensions/contracts
Bad contracts will eat a team alive in the day and age of strict salary cap
How is not trading a second rounder for Ngouke a complete disaster
Spending a 3rd round pick on Mattison when he should have been fortifying our defense
Money for Rudy and Harris. Just terrible decisions

I don't give him a pass. he is the core of the problem. His overall team construction is very flawed and cap distribution.

Signing Rudy to an expensive ext after drafting Irv in rd 2? Let's overpay the has been and not take advantage of the younger more dynamic player on his rookie contract.

all three of your starting CB's walk in the same off season.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/26/2020 9:36:48 AM)

Too weak in the trenches.

The only team we're built to beat in our own division is Detroit.

Chi has Hicks and Goldberg and has been 5-1 against us the last three years. Might want to get some G's that can matchup against those two big boys you face twice a year.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/26/2020 9:56:47 AM)

Nice to see the Vikings embarrassment make the news scroll at the bottom of the screen..

Nothing like knowing your “legendary” in his own mind, defensive minded head coach was plunked Six time by one player on a mediocre playoff team.

Brees had his way with our secondary, kamara ran thru the undersized and depleted line and linebackers, and the art of tackling appears to have fallen back into the dark ages.

Team looked as bad as it played and it played as poorly as it was prepared and coached.

The offense played reasonably well, but when you fall 7, then 10, them more behind, it becomes a study in one dimensional offense and ZERO creativity.

I’d be wii.ing to say, without looking, that our short yardage conversion rate on any down, excluding goal to go, is mediocre at BEST.

I saw more offensive linemen pushed back into the backfield on running plays, in that game, than ever.

Ragnarök -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/26/2020 10:35:01 AM)

Coaching is stale and laughable... Dinosaurs need to be shown path to the tar pits...

Dumpster fire GM has gutted this team with poor moves and disastrous cap move signings...

FIND A QB that looks good in purple...

Kirk FUC King Cousins mortgaged (expose to future risk or constraint for the sake of immediate advantage) the teams future and never did a damn thing to earn his contracts or meet any expectations... The extension should get Rick FIRED NOW...

If KFC must play for us next year I hope they sign a bunch of scrap OL and let him take the beating he deserves...

Why blame Cousins for Spielman's bad decisions?
Kirk is, and always has been the QB we are seeing now.
The only person with any illusions that he was more than that was Spielman.
Cousins is a good, not great, QB being overpaid by a guy that doesn't know a good QB when he sees one. Just look at the QB's we have drafted under Spielman for proof.

Yeah, another Vikings shortcoming is the interior line.
The sad part is, every shortcoming is directly related to the guy building this team, yet he continues to get a pass from ownership.

twinsfan -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/26/2020 12:12:56 PM)

Why did so many of you allow the Vikings to ruin your Christmas? The loss was entertaining and helps our draft position. Winning would have been worst-case scenario.

TJSweens -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/26/2020 12:19:59 PM)

The biggest knock on Cousins is his contract. Yes, it's ridiculously overpriced. At the same time he is a good enough QB to win football games. Yesterday, behind the shittiest line in football, he led his team to 5 TD on the road against a team looking to nail down home field advantage for the playoffs. That should be good enough to win a game. Unless, of course the defense gives up 7 TD.

Spielman screwed up royally on the extension. I have no issues with him taking his shot on the initial deal, but his brains fell out on the floor with the extension.

bohumm -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/26/2020 12:48:19 PM)

The original sin was trading at a premium for Bradford because the back-up QB didn't belong in the league. Everything has cascaded (downwardly) from there.

True but had we ever had the lead we'd go into turtle mode immidiately.

Wilf Bros should have just had Spielman and Zim play out their string and not let them ext Cousins. It would actually be a joyous off season with regime change.

I'm on that. gbnreport has six QBs, 2 WRs, 1 OT, and a mix of 3 positions taken in the first 12 picks. Should be able to get top projected OL or DL player.

I bet not.....

after years and years the message gets old and repetitive. there is a reason coaches win big early or not at all.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/26/2020 3:07:33 PM)

Yes, time to move on from Zimmer.

Since we can't see what Zimmer can do if he has a young Mahomes, let's see what Cousins can do if he is matched up with a SB caliber HC, or one that is possibly that.

Cousins is arguably better than Trent Dilfer, and the Peyton Manning that led the Broncos to a SB win.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/26/2020 3:11:17 PM)

The pressure Griffin and Hunter put in, along with great plays by Kendricks and Smith, masked problems with the Zimmer defense.

mikelado -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/26/2020 8:16:43 PM)

Damn, Carlson is 29-31 this yr...we gave up on him after ONE bad game!! Stupid overreaction like that are why we suck as an organization...fire the lot of 'em!!

kevinemmer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/26/2020 9:26:08 PM)

Draft thread?
Another QB to watch is Ridder of Cincinnati.
Jan 1st against Georgia.

If they can't get Wilson.... that's the kid I want... I think drafting him and sitting him behind Cousins for a year would be awesome... so therefore unlikely to happen.

Zimmer's defense to me has always been a chicken-or-the-egg or a catch-22. Is the defense loaded with so many great players because the defense itself is genius or is the defense genius because it's loaded with so many great players? To me it feels like the second one. We've drafted defense high very often and resigned a lot of them. When we were hit with injuries it positively collapsed. Like I posted earlier, even if the roster was depleted on Christmas Day, couldn't a genius defensive guru put something together to limit the other team to under 50 points?

Imagine you're at a job interview. You're applying for CEO of a chain of car dealerships. You tell the interviewer that you will have the dealerships' service and repair departments running the best they've ever been. The interviewer knows that their service and repair departments have historically been poor. So you get the job. The first thing you do is hire the best there is for service and repair and you invest 75% of the company's resources into service and repair. You yourself invest about 90% of your time in service and repair. As far as salespeople go you just hire whoever. Building maintenance and advertising is completely abandoned. The organization has some ups and downs but mostly underperforms and certainly doesn't do any better than it has in the past. The competitors still outsell you EVERY year.

But just look at that service and repair department!

i agree on Cousins. Every talking head on TV and most posters know Cousins can be above average with a good offensive line. Speilman has ignored that thought every year. Makes zero sense.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/27/2020 12:55:07 PM)

Watching teams like the Chiefs operate versus watching us is like watching 2 different games. They just ran a trick play that would have had 5-7 of our guys jumping offside if we were on D and the same # illegal down field if we tried it on offense.

Just ask...

Wilson seems like a pipe dream.

Ridder does look promising.
