David Levine -> 2020 NBA Draft (2/19/2020 1:11:17 PM)

Because it's never too early to talk draft for the Wolves.

Right now my runaway choice for us is Onyeka Okongwu.

Ideal to play next to KAT, and absolutely needed if we're going to have KAT, Russell and (maybe) Beasley on the floor.

USC’s Onyeka Okongwu Is The 2020 NBA Draft’s Biggest Game-Wrecker

That sums up 30 years of Timberwolves basketball.

David Levine -> RE: 2020 NBA Draft (2/25/2020 4:03:11 PM)

Givony's latest on Okongwu:

Onyeka Okongwu | Fr. | C | USC
Mock draft: No. 7

Okongwu recently passed two significant tests, posting 23 points, 14 rebounds and 6 blocks at Oregon and then 23 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks at Arizona — arguably the best competition he’ll face in the regular season. Okongwu’s impact was felt well beyond the numbers, as he has developed into a devastating force on the defensive end with his ability to cover ground, alter shots around the rim and switch onto anyone. His instincts, timing and mobility give him game-changing potential.

While Okongwu’s defense is what makes him special, he has also been quite a force offensively without having any plays run for him. He catches everything thrown his way, displays phenomenal body control and brings soft touch with either hand.

Although not much of a creator or floor-spacer, Okongwu has a high ceiling thanks to his feel and improvement trajectory, leading some scouts to ponder his candidacy as the top big man in this draft (perhaps ahead of James Wiseman). He has moved firmly into our top 10.

David Levine -> RE: 2020 NBA Draft (3/5/2020 10:57:40 AM)

Tankathon currently has us taking Okongwu at 5 and Devin Vassell at 16.

Yes please.

Vassell. 6'7 SG. 19 year-old Sophomore.

29 MPG: 13 PPG (49/43/73), 5.2 RPG, 1.6 APG, 1.0 BPG, 1.4 SPG.

Red Flags: Deosn;t get many assists (but doesn't turn it over), doesn't get to the line a ton.

-----------

Pros:
Good shooter, especially from deep
Adequate scorer off the dribble
Excels at scoring on off-ball motion plays
Adequate playmaker
Decent rebounder
Decent defender that can get steals and blocks
Solid athlete
Solid motor

Cons:
Struggles to consistently create his own shot
Can struggle to score in traffic
Can be too passive on offense
Can be prone to hoisting up questionable shots
Can gamble too much defensively
Did not see much playing time last year

Summary:
Devin Vassell is an athletic, high-motor swingman that can score the basketball in a variety of ways, and he is also a rangy defender that can get steals, blocks, and stops for his team. He will need to be a more consistent player in games as well as improve his ability to create his own shot off the dribble, but Vassell’s athleticism combined with his ability to shoot and defend could enable him to go in the mid first round in 2020.

David,
What would be your top three players for the wolves to get in the draft and if you don't mind a couple reasons why? And anyone else that cares to weigh in, that would be great as well.

Sounds a lot like Brandon Clarke who should have been ours in the last draft.

I'm liking Deni Avdija to play SF for us. The FT shooting is concerning though.

Who do we take in the 2nd ----overseas guy? Center?

David Levine -> RE: 2020 NBA Draft (4/15/2020 2:13:52 PM)

Kevin O'Connor's draft guide for The Ringer is up.

Along with The Stepien, it's probably the best draft resource out there.

David Levine -> RE: 2020 NBA Draft (4/15/2020 2:14:40 PM)

ONYEKA OKONGWU

Do-it-all big with rare versatility as a defender. Always competes and has a knack for making big plays.

SHADES OF: Bam Adebayo, young Antonio McDyess, Taj Gibson

PLUSES
-Excellent finisher with soft hands that catch tough passes, a pillowy touch around the rim, and the quick-leaping ability to score with power.
-Good post scorer. He does a nice job of getting into position by sealing off defenders. Once he gets the ball, he displays flashes of advanced ability with spins, drop steps, and fakes.
-Handles the ball like a wing. He has a quick first step with an arsenal of moves, including crossovers and rip-throughs, that he uses to get to the rim. But he doesn’t overdo it; he makes good decisions and plays within himself.
-He makes slick passes, loves to throw outlets, and passes well out of the post. He needs to make quicker reads off rolls to the rim and from the perimeter, but he’s in a good place at his age.
-Does the little things: He hustles, screens well, rebounds all over the floor, and makes clutch plays.
-Excellent pick-and-roll defender. He’s mobile and versatile, able to drop, switch, or hedge. When he’s protecting the rim in either pick-and-roll or help situations, his positioning, timing, and instincts lead to effective shot alterations. He’s usually in the right spot, which is rare for a player his age.

MINUSES
-Inconsistent shooting mechanics from the field and the line. He’ll have some bad misses, though his inside touch offers optimism for improvement.
-He’s quiet and doesn’t communicate much on defense either. As a rim protector, he needs to be more talkative to help the defense stay connected.
-Chases blocks. Bites on too many fakes inside.
-He’s slightly undersized for a center at 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot-1 wingspan. He also needs to get significantly stronger to contain elite post-up bigs like Joel Embiid.

Very good write up on Okongwu:

I'm going to be so bummed when we pass on him.

It sure seems like we will get the opportunity to draft him and pass on that opportunity. Tankathon has us preferring in order
Edwards
Ball
Avdija
Toppin.

I hope they do not make a bad choice like 1 year ago where the chosen ones did not play almost anything due to lack of performance

Bill Jandro -> RE: 2020 NBA Draft (6/12/2020 8:07:49 AM)

So are we locked in at the 3rd position being we won't be a team that suits up for these 8 games?

Or could some team tank? I just noticed a mock draft having us picking 6th now.

Lottery can move us back to 6.

The bottom 8 teams set and since they won't be playing any more games, so for those teams, the "pre-lottery" draft order is set.

• We're 3rd going into the lottery.

• They draw pingpong balls for the Top 4 selections, so we'll draft anywhere from 1st to 7th.

• The teams with the three worst records have the same odds for both the No. 1 pick (14%) and staying in the top four (52%).

• The team with the worst record has a 47.9% chance to fall to No. 5. The lowest a team could fall under the old system was to No. 4 -- there was previously just a 35.7% chance of that happening.

• Teams in slots 9 through 6 have a 20-37% chance of jumping into the top five. Previously, that range was 6-22%.

Timberwolves odds:

• Average pick: 4.1

• No. 1: 14%

• Top three: 40.1%

• Top four: 52%

• Top five: 66.9%

TJSweens -> RE: 2020 NBA Draft (6/15/2020 11:40:34 AM)

Amazing. Everyone has at least twice the probability of dropping back multiple slots than they do of just staying put. This never works out well for the Timberwolves.

The highest single probability by far for the Wolves is to drop 3 slots to the 6th pick. With the 3rd worst record, the Wolves have a 40.1% of staying put or moving up and a 59.9% of dropping. Seems awfully messed up to me.

Pauldiercks1 -> RE: 2020 NBA Draft (6/18/2020 12:06:20 PM)

Messed up sure but likely necessary for the NBA draft. Some years, the top player can completely transform a franchise.

A lot of if buts and coconuts,
Like landing Shaq may possibly be still be positively affecting this team. We may have had more success, and then drafted Curry thinking he wouldn't mind playing here who knows.

I think it's the right way to do it even though I may not often like it.

Hard to believe this lottery business isn't somewhat rigged considering we have never moved up ever. Always down.

Even if you finish with the worst record the odds are much more in your favor to move down then it is to move up. That's why we have a lottery. There is no clear number one choice to the real value is in the sixth or so, You get almost the same talent with a much smaller rookie contract. Rossa is making a lot of noise about trading the pick.

It a 4-5M/year difference. Not that significant. What you gain in money, you more than lose in flexibility.

Whether it's the actual NBA draft or a fantasy basketball draft I always prefer the #1 pick.
