TJSweens -> 2020 Wild Post Mortem Offseason & Draft (4/7/2020 1:55:08 PM)

Barring some truncated piece of crap playoffs in NDak, looks like it's time to shift into ...wait til next year mode.

TJSweens -> RE: 2020 Wild Post Mortem Offseason & Draft (4/7/2020 2:15:11 PM)

It sounds like this year's draft is supposed to be one of the best in a long time. A great year to have multiple first round picks like the Wild (No's 11 & 24). I wonder if Geurin will be able to recoup the 3rd rounder we are missing.

Here are the names I am seeing in the most recent mocks at each spot.

#11
Yaroslav Askarov, G, SKA-1946 (MHL), 6' 2" / 176
Rare right glove goalie with good size, economy of movements and good concentration. Is said to be the best Russian netminder since Andrei Vasilevski. Very cool an calm, and it sometimes seems as if he takes control on games and wins them with is high end abilities. Actually baits shooter with his positioning; gives them an opening he wants them to target and then takes it away as they fire. A reverse hand goalie, and although is a different look to shooters used to left gloves netminders and right handed paddles, it is not the reason for his high success level. Very economic in his movements, and with the play, and reacts with top reflexes when adjusting. Projects as a goaltender who gets his named called in the first round.

Dylan Holloway, LW, Wisconsin, 6' 1" / 192
Six foot 200 pound centre with soft hands and excellent vision. The former AJHL MVP and 2019 Canadian Junior Player of the year help Team Canada win golds in the 2018 Ivan Hlinka Gretsky Cup. Possesses a high level hockey IQ, strong balance, lateral quickness and turning ability. Will need to get a quicker first step, and refine his play in his own end. Very creative pivot who plays to control the mid-ice. Has soft hands and passing ability and a strong wrist shot. Possesses tremendous puckhandling ability and lateral quickness that propel him through the defensive layers. Uses his top gear to drive from possession scrum to the next, and is great on the cycle. Always using his speed as a weapon and as a relentless checker and attacker, he creates space on zone entries. So strong in his stop and starts, but his best attributemay be his lateral quickness, where he turns in tight space and strings one move into a series that causes the opposition to leave their assignments and start running around. Will play both wing and centre as he climbs thec rungs to the bigs.

Connor Zary, C, Kamloops (WHL), 6' 0" / 180
Dub centre with character, skill and high compete level. Slick stick handling pivot who sees the plays developing before the have come to fruition. He has excellent offensive instincts. His feet and hands play fast in unison. A one touch passer. Smart playmaker who will link together passing plays with good touch, and skates up closer to his linemates to shorten the length of passes, then flies to an open area to receive a return pass. Draws the opposition out of their areas and his linemates gain scoring areas as a result. Strong 200 foot player. Will gain the leg strength that is missing. Certainly drives the play for his team with his present abilities, and may reach the 100 point plateau this season.

#24
Tyson Foerster, F, Barrie (OHL), 6'1" / 194
Big Winger whose strong in puck battles and plays a physical game. Has a good vision, playmaking skills, shot and hands. But he lacks quickness and agility and gets lost in transition because of it. Needs to be quicker in his stop / starts, and like Dustin Penner, needs to improve his feet big time.

Shakir Mukhamadullin, D, Tolpar Ufa (MHL) 6' 2.5" / 180
Ultra-involved big defender with a strong skill set, big-time one-timer, and strong hitter. Reads and reacts in all zones. Cool when possessing the puck in his end, he remains calm and makes crisp passes in transirion, steps up in the neutral zone to unearth loose pucks and quickly reverses the flow with his dishes. Displays good feet, uses his tight cuts to win races to the puck. There is much to like about his strong overall game.

Emil Andrae, D, HV71 (SHL), 5' 9" / 183
Undersized push the pace defender whose forte is his agility, high end stick handling ability, creativity, and a “riverboat style” of high risk dangles and moves to unravel the opposition defensive plans. Likes the puck on his stick and his skating and high end edgework help him to gain momentum on entires and pucks he gets back after he starts up-ice from him end. His speed will beat the opposition one on one, create open ice, and odd man openings that turn into looks. His size leaves him at a deficit along the wall and in his on crease area. That doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t make contact to make a play. He does use his skating gifts to avoid much of the contact while attacking. Has a nice wrist shot, and makes the transition pass well, his can be surgical when he sees openings on the attack.

Great stuff

TJSweens -> RE: 2020 Wild Post Mortem Offseason & Draft (4/7/2020 2:27:58 PM)

I was lukewarm on the idea of the Russian goalie, but the scouting profiles are uniformly praising the hell out of him. The name that keeps coming up in pro comps is Pekka Rinne.

Is this guy possibly going to be a big scorer in the NHL?

Adam Beckman has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Minnesota Wild.
Beckman received the Bob Clarke Trophy as 2019-20 WHL scoring champion, with 107 points in 63 games for Spokane. He also led the WHL in goals (48) and shots on goal (316), while ranking second in power-play goals (16) and game-winning goals (nine). The 18-year-old forward tied for third in assists (59) and placed fifth with a plus-44 rating. Beckman was chosen by the Wild in the third round (75th overall) of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. The Wild also announced that prospect Damien Giroux has agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the club.

There is really no way to tell how much of a scorer Beckman will be until he sees AHL action. The Wild have at least one guy in the system who was a 50 goal scorer in juniors, but scored something like 16 for Iowa last year.

In juniors the guys are playing against 16 to 19 year olds. In the minors, they compete against 20 to 30+ year olds, many of whom have had several cups of coffee in the NHL.

What I do know about Beckman is that he was considered a steal at #75 overall last year. The reports are that he is a fast, highly skilled centre, with a big offensive game in juniors. There is certainly reason to be excited about his potential.

When the NHL season came to a halt March 12, the Florida Panthers, New York Islanders, and New York Rangers were within three points of a playoff spot in the East, while the Vancouver Canucks, Minnesota Wild, and Arizona Coyotes were within four points in the West.
Several players around the league have spoken out about hoping to have a chance at the playoffs, including Panthers stars Aleksander Barkov and Sergei Bobrovsky, who said it wouldn't be fair if the league jumped straight to the postseason with 11-14 games remaining on each team's schedule.
Rangers winger and potential MVP candidate Artemi Panarin also said it would be unfair if his New York squad didn't get a chance to make the playoffs after surging up the standings in the second half of the season.

Several of the older Mn Wild players were contacted, and most said …. "what? who? why? Nahhhhh, we're good."

These same older Wild players reportedly also get up every night to pee and wander around the house.

A little ditty from the Athletic:

Zach Parise, Minnesota Wild
Five years remaining, $7.538-million cap hit

Both Parise and Ryan Suter qualify here less because they’re no longer productive players — they are — but as a result of the incredible cap liabilities they represent. Signed to matching 13-year contracts back when every team in the league was tacking on dirt-cheap extra years to lower cap hit, the duo are major risks from a cap recapture perspective.

Those cheap years at the end might be huge liabilities on the recapture side, but they’re perfect for a compliance buyout. The Wild would only have to spend $12-million in real dollars (spread out over 10 years) to clear the $37.7-million in remaining cap hit on Parise and entirely neutralize the risk he represents. As much as he’s still a useful player, that’s an easy out from under a looming threat.

If any team in the NHL should push for two compliance buyouts, it’s the Wild, who for a real-world cost of $2.4-million per year could knock $15-million and change off their books for each of the next five seasons while simultaneously squeaking their way out from under Gary Bettman’s elaborate cap recapture machine.

Yes please!

Thanks. The numbers were impressive, but of course low level of competition.

Yup, Russo had a recap of the entire game on the Athletic the other day with quotes from players and coaches. After watching those clips I knew you would enjoy them as much as I did.

Best part was, the Avs were (as usual) soooooo sure they had us.
NOT
SO
FAST
Fun little run we put together that year, only a short stretch tho, to win the really big prizes, we have to learn to sustain that for a MONTH

Some really promising reports on TC TV lately regarding our chances at landing our Russian monster.
Guerin is talking like its a done deal, soon.
Damn I hope that one thing finally pans out for us.

I remember Fletch thinking the same thing before he signed a 3 year extension in Russia.

Nice to see some info on Fiala show up last night
One of the few guys in a country where the rinks are open
He's ready to go
Love hearing that he truly believes the move to Minnesota saved his career
He's very appreciative and loves this team
I'm shimmying out on the limb
I really think he's a guy who just might be The Guy who gets it done.
Build around this dude.
Teammates and opponents can't hide it when they find someone who is truly different. This kid is.
His explosiveness hasn't been seen here since Gaborik
And we forget … when Gaborik got surrounded by the right pieces, he was The Man that won LA Cups.
He made the difference, he put up the numbers, he got the job done. This kid has that potential.

Hopefully he doesn't get covid due to Sweden not having any social restrictions

The one grudge each NHL city won't give up .

Well, DUH.

Minnesota Wild
Thank goodness the NHL has returned to Minnesota, the state of hockey. Though this should really be about the Minnesota Wild, the people of Minnesota have a grudge against Norm Green that will never go away.

The owner of the Minnesota North Stars relocated his team to Dallas in 1993 for several reasons. Attendance was poor, and the team could not lure corporate sponsors or reach a deal for a new arena in the Twin Cities. Green was also hit with a sexual harassment suit by a Minnesota employee around the same time as he moved the team; it was settled out of court. It felt especially cruel that Minnesota had to watch the Dallas Stars win the Stanley Cup six years later. Though Minnesota was quickly awarded an expansion franchise, the Wild have yet to win a Cup.
