TJSweens -> Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 9:12:04 AM)

Now that we know the season is starting January 13, it's time to start a thread for the season and games.

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 9:16:29 AM)

Love Guerin's attitude about playing in the West and travel

“It doesn’t concern me. It doesn’t. We travel on great planes. We stay in great hotels. We eat properly. We have plenty of time to acclimate to a different time zone. Everybody travels. If a team is in the West, their travel is tough. That’s just the way it is. I’m not worried about it at all.”

This is a refreshing change from the Minnesota sports culture of bitching about playing back to back or day game after night game or traveling to the west coast. He is sending out the message very clearly...No excuses. I expect you to perform.

Amen man
Less excuses
More PLAY

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 9:46:28 AM)

Flip Saunders used to be especially bad in this regard. The man whined incessantly about playing back to back games. Not surprisingly the Wolves record in game 2 of back to backs was abysmal.

Watched the season preview last night on NHL network
We are looking at being anywhere from #4 to #6 in the West
According to the experts
Cannot disagree on what they say or see so far
Our fate will be in the hands of a couple of the regular suspects in the West, who are in "last hurrah" stages.
How the Sharks and Ducks perform will ultimately seal our fate one way or the other.
We need to keep pace with the Blues, they and us will be fighting for the final spot it feels like.
Of course the Avs are everyone's darlings and are untouchable. We shall see. For some reason we play them well.
Sharks are depending on Dubnyk to regain form. Which should be good for the rest of us.

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 9:54:15 AM)

There is a growing consensus that the California teams are in decline.

I am actually pretty stoked about the Wild this year. Kaprizov, Fiala and Rossi are a different caliber of young star than our past players of the future like Coyle, Granny, Zucker and Nino.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 10:04:00 AM)

Yep, tried to say that but I get all jumbled up some times.
The fate of those aging teams will affect us greatly
Do they have another year in them?
It looks like the 54 or 56 or whatever it is.. games will be played in like 120 -some days?
Will be a war of attrition if so. And should benefit us.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 10:05:54 AM)

I don't even care about making the playoffs or not. I took last year off for the first time ever. I knew we would be stuck in the same quagmire as the past 5 years and just couldn't stomach it anymore. Needed a break from mediocrity. Was hoping they would shock me but guess what? They didn't. It was the same ole BS. Dubnyk sucked, couldn't score ect..... I read every recap, watched highlights and the games when they were national broadcast. Wasn't even pissed about getting our asses handed to us by Vancouver. Just laughed and said "yeap, that's about right"

Fast forward to now. The one obvious bright spot was Fiala. Now with KK and Rossi to look forward to, I'm getting fired up again. Another huge lift was when we jettisoned Dubs. At least there is some hope again.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 10:06:28 AM)

And agree on Bill G. Might just be talk at this point but it's damn refreshing.

Agree 100%. Very refreshing. It may be a little more than talk at this point. He did move NTG, which I didn't think was possible. He came damn close to moving Parise, which means it is possible and he is willing to do it. He said good bye to Mikko rather than be the 4th consecutive GM to bend over and kiss his ass. There are some positive actions to go with good rhetoric. Still a lot to be answered on talent acquisition.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 10:32:27 AM)

EJ Hradek was really pushing for us to go with Kaponnen in goal at some point
He's sold on him, or at least on giving him the job at some point this year
Will be an interesting watch

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 10:45:18 AM)

I hope Kapo is our guy going forward. Will have to see him play more. I'm good with Talbot for this year. As I have some info on him seeing him play over the years. When we acquired Dubnyk I said "WTF is that?".

It actually makes me laugh. Years ago I had a project with a couple dude from Montreal. Cool guys who were really in to the game. We played the Habs and I met them to watch the game. Starting lineup was announced and they looked at me in horror "who the F is Darcy Kuemper?????????". They literally had never heard of him. It was another of those embarrassing MN sports moments. Knowing dudes who loved the game, in one of the richest historical spots for the game, had no idea who your starter was.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 10:58:37 AM)

Yep
"Talbot" is a real attempt to get thru a season
"Dubnyk" (back then) was a stab in the dark that paid off early, but got tough when reality set in

Around the league you have legit options and then you have wild guesses.
We took a lot of wild guesses for awhile
Guerin won't

I shouldn't say getting rid of but replacing Dubs with Talbot and having a goaltender is huge....I also like Buggy and Bonino on this team....a couple guys that have won before.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 6:04:30 PM)

Marco looks pretty good eh.

stfrank -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 6:41:51 PM)

He does look pretty good.

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 7:20:51 PM)

What am I missing.?

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 9:41:34 PM)

Boldy very impressive so far.
Pretty polished player.
Understands puck movement.
Feeling good about our guys.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/22/2020 9:44:51 PM)

Marco looked good Tim
Austria fell by a goal to the Swiss
Rossi best player on the ice.
Got a Crosby or parise feel to him imo.

US up on Finns 3-1.
Boldy doing well.
Gopher D look good

Just practice games but they get after it.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/23/2020 7:00:46 AM)

3-2 final over Finland
Started slow, dominated the middle.
Not an overwhelming US squad, will be hard to pull a medal this year.

Yup, as usual without much practice time it is a lot of individual play.
Finland looked to be a more polished team while the US looked like a bunch of guys out there taking turns making rushes to the net.

stfrank -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (12/23/2020 8:19:09 AM)

I will say, Boldy made his presence felt every time he was on the ice. And, for the most part it was positive. I think the Wild may have another keeper in him.

Get that it was just a first impression, but Boldys ahead of anyone else I saw as far as being NHL ready
His puck management skills and rink awareness is off the charts
Every pass he made put people in better spots
They've all got "boy" look to them, but he's polished.

Nailed it
They are scary (Finland)
Lengthy and always seem pissed off about something
They'll be a hard beat when the real play starts

There is another Wild prospect to watch for in the tournament. Russian Vladislav Firstov was taken in the second round, the same year as Boldy. He's a left hand shot winger, who supposed to have size, speed, great puck control and high IQ.

For as much as Fenton was reviled in these parts, he sure brought a lot of young talent into the organization in his 1 year.
