I completely agree on the stupidity of the expansion draft format, but I still blame Fletch. He didn't want to expose on of Brodin, Dumba or Scandella to the draft, so instead he traded the top prospect in the organization in Tuch along with Haula, who was a guy who could score 15 goals while checking the fastest forwards in hockey.

To underscore how incredibly stupid that move was, Anthony Lapanta whole heartedly endorsed it.

Suck up. Is Lapanta related to Matt?

Lynn G. -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/12/2021 2:37:38 PM)

Honest question - how were expansion teams "created" in the past? I know they didn't have to start completely from scratch and bring in a bunch of high school seniors to fill in the gaps after draft day - but what specifically was different when Las Vegas entered the NHL? I admit I wasn't paying much attention in the olden days to that kind of thing.

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/12/2021 2:55:19 PM)

There has always been an expansion draft. Teams were allowed to protect more players in the past. There was no expectation that the expansion draft would produce a cup contender in the first year like Vegas was. The idea was that they could put a team on the ice, while they drafted and developed for the future.

Lynn G. -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/12/2021 3:04:11 PM)

That's what I pictured. So the change was how many players a team could protect. Is that a Bettmann move?

Yes it was a Bettman $$$ move. By going with this format, he could extort a much bigger franchise fee out of the new owner.

And all of the other owners got a nice cut of the pie, so they gladly allowed it to happen.

stfrank -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/12/2021 9:40:30 PM)

A tight game where the Wild were chasing the puck most of the game turned into a 4-0 win in the 3rd period and KK got his first hat trick in the NHL.
It's great that we won, but we really got our asses kicked in the face off circle.
Talbot was great in goal tonight. It sure is nice to have 2 good goalies.

Lynn G. -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/12/2021 9:57:51 PM)

Yep - two focuses of practice time:

Power Play
Faceoffs

It looked, early on, like Bonino was going to be a positive in the faceoffs - but overall we stink at that.

Excellent games for both Kaprisov and Talbot.

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/12/2021 9:58:38 PM)

Kaprizov....DAMN!!!!

stfrank -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/12/2021 10:08:55 PM)

And I loved that Talbot shut down Kessel over and over on 1 on 0's!
Getting the shutout was just icing on the cake.

Special K very special.

Karill the Thrill very thrilling.

Talbot was tremendous.

* - Talbot
** - Karill The Thrill
*** - Who cares

Goat (not the good kind) - Kessel.

Continuous weakness = faceoffs. Could come back to haunt us.

kevinemmer -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/13/2021 7:53:22 AM)

Hope Foligno is ok.
Heart and soul of this team.
Talbot was very good, we were chasing (as ST said) most of the game.
Zucs and KK have “it” going on!
So worth the wait for Kirill, he is quickly becoming the face of the franchise.
Face-offs seem like a problem all year, but we’ve been getting away with it.
PP too, but it is looking better lately.

How many years have we watched young hockey players turn into superstars right before our eyes?

This time - he plays for OUR team. [sm=occasion14.gif][sm=anim_wow.gif][sm=WAVE2.gif][sm=EMOTICHEERLEADER.gif]

White Russian is turning the NHL upside-down!

Lynn G. -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/14/2021 12:09:12 PM)

It'll be interesting to see how much ice time Parise gets today. Is there a subtle message the coach is sending? I really like Parise, and I'm always soft on local guys on our various teams, but there is no doubt he has lost a step, and it didn't help that he thought he knew better than the coaches about how long to stay on the ice.

I haven't read an update on Foligno's injury. I'm sure they're going to just call it "lower body" so we won't have details, but for him to not come back in after the first period injury is a bit concerning.

stfrank -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/14/2021 12:56:56 PM)

I think Parise sitting has more to do with attitude than his declining skills due to age. To me, it's very refreshing to have a coach that plays the guys that deserve to play instead of playing to the contract.
I hope Foligno just has a bad bruise and didn't break anything in the foot. Even with a bruise, it's real hard to get your foot in a boot for a few days.....lower body injury. [:-]
I think Fiala will do better on a line away from Zach. He sure looked better in the 3rd period Friday once Zach was on the bench.

stfrank -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/14/2021 5:14:14 PM)

Wild play another tight game until opening it up in the 3rd for a 4-1 win.
It seems like we wear down the Coyotes with our depth and take over in the 3rd period.
Going for a 3 game sweep on Tuesday.

stfrank -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/14/2021 6:53:48 PM)

I just saw this tidbit from Russo:

Foligno update
According to sources, Foligno (foot) is expected to miss at least a couple weeks. Taxi squad callup Luke Johnson played for Foligno on Sunday as Marcus Johansson continues to work his way back from an upper-body injury.

Johansson has missed the past 13 games and 15 of the past 17.

I see three of them (Ek, Fiala, and Special K). Lost in the Special K shuffle is how well Ek is playing.

Pretty amazing the Wilds improvement.

bstinger -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/16/2021 7:47:18 PM)

Nice we killed off the 5 minute major.

Zukes missed gaping net with seconds remaining.

1-0 good guys after 1.

stfrank -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2021 Season / Game Day (3/16/2021 9:37:00 PM)

Another win for the Wild in a shutout for Kaapo. A perfect homestand to boot!
A great night for hockey in Minnesota. [:D]

Finally, when games turn into a goalie showdown, our guy won't be the one who blinks.
