I was declaring Bateman a first round pick and somebody else here was saying 3rd. I'm on a minor roll here.

Virtually every board had him lower first round and rightfully so. Anyone saying 3rd round is just anti-Gopher grumpiness.

If you watched the Gophers play you knew 2 years ago he was a 1st round pick. The reason the gophers could run the ball so effectively is that teams had to double and or zone it up to account for Bateman.

I have my reservations on Bateman. Like you, I thought he was a star two years ago. What I saw last season was a guy that couldn't make it happen without Tyler Johnson on the other side. He strikes me as a bit of a diva. He'll have his moments, but never be a 90-100-catch guy.

He did have COVID last year (Opted out then in then out) and he was the man and doubled but the talent is there. I agree on the 90-100 take; mostly because he is going to a running team with Jackson and the OSU back.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/30/2021 7:55:01 AM)

RS says they tried to trade up a couple of spots from 23 to secure who they wanted but they couldn't find a taker. I presume he means to ensure taking Darrisaw because it was in that context. Zimmer says once the draft got to around 21 (20?) they were breathing ok because one of their group of players would be there.

Those two statements don't line up unless RS means they tried to move up early on. But he also said the meaningful phone calls are when they are within 2-3 spots of picking because you have a better idea of who might be there for the trade. So a move early is counter to that.

I believe Zimmer in that they had their group of players for 23, and also believe one of them included Paye.

Overall, I thought the move that Minnesota made to get two thirds and Darrisaw was a solid play. They needed an OT and they got a decent one. They needed added depth in the draft as a result of not much action in free agency, and got two third-round picks. I would have rather seen a second round pick, but they only had so much leverage and the #66 is fairly close to a late second. Now they need to get at least one solid interior guy in the third, and they've got a handful of picks to make it happen.

Agree on all. but he got extremely lucky Darrisaw was there.

What worries me is that Spielman will now think he's done enough for the oline and won't address G until the 6th rd. I'm also afraid he's going to trade down vs up and accumulate a bunch of 7th rd picks. Not sure Spielman can help himself regarding this accumulation of late rders.

They should have Bohumm's TalkVikes posts from the last month plastered to the wall in giant font in the Vikings war room in case Spielman ever feels he's done enough for the oline.

Sometimes it's better to be lucky then good. I'm okay with Darrisaw. I would not have been okay with Paye.

Nice job Phil. A handful of those guys from the second will be available when we pick. Much of the third will be available. If a guy like Nixon drops, I say you take him. Mayfield, Carman or Radunz would be great gifts.

I think you look at the way dynasty teams were built (Cowboys, NE, etc.) is that they accumulated a ton of 3rd and 4th round picks which allowed them to move around and take chances on those guys that always drop for whatever reason.

That is why I don't get so pissed at Spielman when he grabs extra 3rds...even fourth rounders. I remember Dallas and NE trading current 4th for next years third....wouldn't surprise me one bit. Anything below that pisses me off...6th/7th....blah.

What I would do is maybe gamble on a speedy WR or another OT/OG with all these picks....be in the driver seat and maybe trade a current lineman (even Cleveland) if the right Olineman drops to us or edge guy drops trade (Willekes).

Also as Brad mentioned DT would be sneaky too as we seemed to already be stocked at DE...

We're actually positioned very good with 8 picks in rds 3 & 4. In the past the bulk of our picks were 5-7th rders and it really didn't yield many/any good players.

I just hope Spielman makes selections and doesn't trade down from here forward. We don't need 20 draft picks 6 or 8 will be fine.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/30/2021 7:59:16 AM)

I think they will make a move to secure a second round pick, picking BPA among G and DE. Somehow, they will address guard tonight in the second or third.

Zimmer also said they want to go bigger on the OL, hence Darrisaw. There are some big guards available.

I was high on him early, but we ended up not addressing the OL in free agency. Plus 6' 4", 270 changed to something smaller.

Stop shoehorning your strawman to fit. Aikman was #1 overall. Michael Irvin #11 overall. Emmitt Smith #17 overall.

Todd with 4 3rds and 4 4ths what is your thoughts on a Speedy WR also....that is my sneaky pick as this draft seems to have a ton of depth. What I see happening is Rick keeping his highest 3rd to trade down to recoup the 3rd and 4th he needs to move up into the 2nd.

We know he can't help himself

We don't have 4 4ths...

I could see a WR with one of 3 4ths.

He said he was going to trade to get six 3rds and then laughed.

Jackson can't throw the ball. That's another concern if you are Bateman.

That extra pick was from his mock where he magically got an extra 3rd and 4th for trading down 3 spots.

Brad H -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/30/2021 8:06:42 AM)

All I know is, our defensive tackles were horrendous last season. Perhaps the worst in the league.

I was never real impressed with Bateman. He has the talent but i don't like what he has between the ears and inconsistent effort. I liked Johnson way more because he has more heart.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/30/2021 8:09:18 AM)

Part of me thinks Wilf said get that second pick back w/o using more assets. And he's real close using the Baltimore 3rd and just the higher Jets 3rd.

We've got 10 pretty good options for guard and DE tomorrow. Trade up and skip day 3.

Bump.

Yes please! Burn all the picks you need to get us a starter at each position.

Hats4Bats -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/30/2021 8:19:38 AM)

I agree Pager..

Exactly the QB's I want us to target (Mills, Mond or Newman). I read somewhere late last night (so not sure where) that if Rodgers somehow ends up in Denver, we would be in on a trade for Drew Lock for a 4th or 5th rd pick? Thoughts?

Brad H -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/30/2021 8:24:49 AM)

I want to know more about the Aaron Rodgers situation. It seems that Rodgers decided to return the favor from last season when the Packers surprised him by moving up to pick a quarterback on day one.

Drew Lock is terrible. Maybe the worst starter in the league.

I wouldn't be mad if Spielman stood pat.

He won't and I think I'd prefer to see him actively target someone with a move into 2nd.

Agreed. I'm not a real fan of "let's see who falls to us". We don't need 10 picks. We need 3 good picks.

Tom Sykes -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/30/2021 8:28:39 AM)

BPA at IOL-DE-QB-S-WR in late 2nd

We are down to three gaping holes, backup QB, G and DE. For me, that is encouraging from where the offseason started.

I am also encouraged we are going young at Backup QB, a stiff is usually one of our first plays in March ... I’m thinking that is our next priority.

IOL is still your tiebraker between the other positions ... the DL is much much stronger as is than the OL and Weatherly Wonnum trump Dozier Cole.

DE is your 2nd tiebreaker because, well, Weatherly Wonnum.

Wr, S in the 4th.

Brad H -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/30/2021 8:38:02 AM)

The top remaining quarterbacks. Who do we draft?

Mills
Trask
Newman
Mond
Franks
Buechele
Ehlinger

Brad H -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/30/2021 8:47:39 AM)

I'm going off the board with Zac Thomas (Appalachian State) in a late round at QB.
