We'll be in a lot better shape after the draft. Possibly
grab a released vet FA later as well.

Yep.

I'm thinking Udoh in the mix also. Did virtual off season set him back last year? Maybe. But he still deserved a look when we were out of contention.

Seriously?

Getting Hunter, Pierce and Barr back was "barren"?

Does he have so little faith in his two 2nd year CBs that our "defense was "barren"'?

I swear if the guy needs 11 All-Pros and/or 1st round picks to maintain his "defensive guru" status, then the Emperor truly has no clothes.

He can even have all that and he'll still bitch to the press that such and such was 4.3 cm off from where he was supposed to line up.

Ref the bold, so he's not in the mix.

In the mix this year. My glass is half full.

For some reason, not last year. Maybe never playing Guard before and not getting an off season to work at it.

In the mix this year to get fill in looks. Not significant unless its emergency.

Any expectation more tha that is glass spilling over.

Last year was an emergency.

I really think getting Woods, Alexander, and Peterson on cheaper 1 year contracts are good moves but there needs to be some made on offense. FA is really one sided to Defense again.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Free Agency 2021 (4/1/2021 7:03:38 PM)

Geno Atkins and Kawann Short are still available. I wonder if one of those would sign for a veterans minimum to play as a backup.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Free Agency 2021 (4/2/2021 7:31:29 AM)

So you look at the money spent on the roster:

Kirk 30
Kyle 4.4 Dead Cap
Reiff 3.2 Dead Cap
Bailey 2.1 Dead Cap
Thielen 6
Dalvin 5
Garrett 3.5
JJ 3
O'Neil 2.4
Hill 2.4
Cole 2.1
Irv 1.5
Ezra 1.2
Mattison 1
Dru 1
Conklin 1
Udoh 1

Hunter 17.8
Hendricks 12.5
Harry 10.3
Peterson 8
Barr 6.5
Dalvin 6
Pierce 5
Hughes 3
Weatherly 2.5
Gladney 2.5
Vigil 1.7
Dantzler 1
Alexander 1
Wonnum 1
Lynch 1
Watts 1
Stephen 1.3 Dead Cap

The problem is the contracts given to Stephen, Rudolph, and Bailey. Cutting Reiff will end up costing 3 million also but with the market full of Tackles I think we can replace him.....the problem is why was Stephen, Rudolph, and Bailey so overpaid for what they do? The dead cap just for Rudolph 3 this year and next could have bee used on the offense.....

Otherwise the cap is pretty evenly spent on the salaries for the Def Starters.

marty -> RE: Free Agency 2021 (4/2/2021 9:21:01 AM)

I think the Vikes should get Kyle Sloter back, I like seeing the Vikings winning all of their pre-season games ;)

You also look at all the dead money from last year. Money that could have rolled over.

The Rudolph issue relates to kicking the can down the road as much as overpaying. We were in a bind cap wise in 2019 and addressing that via Rudolph's contract (reducing the cap hit in 2019 but adding years) spilled over to this year. Given what little success we have had in recent years, I guess that the approach the Vikings used with Rudolph in 2019 was a net positive, as the win over New Orleans in the playoffs with the catch by Rudolph was about an enjoyable as any single play since the Mpls Miracle.

Which one. We talking Peter Sellers or Steve Martin? Personally I prefer Sellers, although either one would be an upgrade from Dakota Dozier. [sm=scratch.gif]

Bill Johanesen -> RE: Free Agency 2021 (4/2/2021 2:51:01 PM)

And I admit I was wrong. Thought we would have signed two low-tier guards. Instead we signed only one. Actually not even that as he is a low-tier center.

Oh no question- Peter Sellers.

Same w/ the Bond movies- Sean Connery

I remember arguing with you in the draft thread last year when we passed on all the Gs in the 3rd-4th rd. because you said we had Samia and Udoh who 'held their own' against Mack and the Bears. And nobody at that point in the draft were going to beat them out.

Now its Udoh 'shut Mack down' (2 years ago) ... [&o] ... you mean the Mack with neck and back issues in the last useless game of a disappointing season (for the Bears)?

Samia also played well against the Bears that year ... not much of an indicator.

O'Neal is our only solid starter right now. Hill is a decent back-up. Cleveland may improve and Bradbury may vastly improve but, as of today, our OL situation is worse off than last year (without Reiff); and the IOL is still 'barren'.

I wouldn't necessarily count on Udoh for much...

However, I think it's unfair to lump him in with Samia.

The bears game Samia showed you exactly what you saw during his starting stint.... he'd be ok one play and then fall down lurching on the next.

Udoh was pretty consistent and pretty solid.

However, it was last game of the season... nothing to play for... etc...

I'd say Udoh=Aviante Collins in the fact that he couldn't get on the field last year... but this coaching staff has a history of sketchy judgement on who should be starting.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Free Agency 2021 (4/3/2021 4:40:39 AM)

Udoh has the physical tools and attributes of a good offensive lineman. He came from a small school program, but that should not be an excuse any longer. This is his third year in the pros. He's a Junior. Time for him to show what he's got.

Tom Sykes -> RE: Free Agency 2021 (4/3/2021 8:35:02 AM)

That’s right Bruce ... third year, time to play a full or part-time role or something. Maybe he’s going to be yet another guy that makes the coaches look bad for getting in a game and obviously being better than the player before. I sure hope so ... maybe he’s just not good enough to get on the field.

Its not like he’s been in a development program that cranks out successful OL.
