Another good nugget for O'Connell:

NFL Teams in 2021 ran the 11 personnel package (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR) on average at 61%.
The 2 highest teams?

1. LA Rams - 85%
2. Bengals - 77%

28. Vikings - 47%

https://www.sharpfootballanalysis.com/nfl-stats/personnel-groupings/offense/offensive-personnel-grouping-frequency-2021/

Compare that to Jim Harbaugh and his run heavy offenses.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/6/2022 8:53:04 AM)

I like the idea of swapping QB's with Cleveland.

A player for player swap with us getting out of 35 of that 45 million. No draft compensation from us.

Hold onto Baker for a bit. Draft a QB. Pick the most advantageous time to move Baker.

Yep. How many years did it take him bring in some athletes and start throwing the ball? And Georgia still made them look like plodders.

With KOC taking the job at Minnesota, I think that means that Cousins is staying in place. I could certainly be wrong, but KOC has history with Cousins and it can be said that Stafford and Cousins are fairly similar types of QB's. Both have solid arm talent, with accuracy and ball placement a premium and both also throw a good ball downfield. Both also have similar poor traits, not being mobile, pocket awareness and the mantra of not being able to put the team on your shoulders and take them to victory. I get people being weary of Cousins, he's an odd dude, kindoff a nerd type, so uncomfortable to get behind. He's not the QB who everybody loves and fawns over, but I do believe he can take a team to the championship. If you add one more solid piece, possible two (Bradbury) to the offensive line, possibly another tall receiver, and this offense is pretty formidable, now that it will be opened up. I say extend Cousins, fix the salary cap so that we can do a couple other FA moves, and get this defense some help in the draft.

I know many would like to see a fresh start in the QB room, hell, I'm one of them, but if I'm reading the tea leaves, I believe it's saying get used to Cousins and truth be told, that's not the worst thing that can happen this off season!

Jeff Allen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/6/2022 1:20:07 PM)

I like the idea of trading Cousins and some others, tank in 2022, and then build for 2023. Need to find the QB either in this year's draft or next year.

I agree, and at this point in time, all I care about is NOT giving him an extension to rework his contract and lower the cap hit, unless it’s a sign and trade.

And not for Deshaun Watson…..( I’m looking at you, Marty)..

If we do a sign and trade.. I’d prefer draft picks, or any QB that the “ still not in place” coaching staff feels would be a good fit for the offensive philosophy.

I’m ok with cousins for next season, and if a new regime can get him to the next level of winning, like in prime time and in playoff situations..then resign him..

But his history, Cousin’s history, seems to indicate he has reached his plateau.

I'm at this point too. Anything but an extension for Kirk. Meaning, this upcoming season (if not sooner via trade) will be the last season he will be a Viking.

We need to move on. We chose the right thing in firing Rick and Mike, now do the right thing and move on from Kirk. Start over.

I can't respect anyone associated with a tank effort - that must be an oxymoron.

regarding vaccinations; i'm pro-choice...but i wouldn't pay that much money to a guy with his level of talent at quarterback if he refused to be vaccinated...for me, it's that simple of a business decision....

zulgad likes that trade, too...but he sees it as a 'stafford' trade - two 1st round picks, one for cousins, one for taking baker....

i'd like it, but i'd try to trade baker after the making the cousins deal....

if we can't get a QB that we like with our 1st rounder, do the #12 for a '22/2nd and '23/1st trade...hoard '23 picks for a big trade in 2023....

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/6/2022 2:52:01 PM)

The one season O'Connell worked with KC, was KC's worst year. O'Connell has worked with Brady and other QBs, he knows how KC can be error prone.

The difference with Stafford is, the Rams saw him as a final piece. The Vikings aren't that close. After you look at what Dana mentioned for offense, then there all the holes on defense. And that is with a lot less cap money to work with.

I think KC is as good as gone.

Him being nerdy makes it all that much easier for me to get behind him. I prefer nerd to jock every time.

I don't think that's true. I've seen people argue this statement with stats and personal that are die hard fans of Wash and they don't agree with you.

Not a purposeful tank...but if they get rid of Cousins and a couple other high priced contracts they will not be good. Everyone obviously will do their best, bet they will end up 5-12 with a nice draft pick...building for 2023. Cincinnati did this a few years ago and are now in the Super Bowl.

Jeff Allen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/6/2022 7:49:34 PM)

The other option is to extend Cousins. Seems pointless to just let him play in 2022 with no future contract so the team can go 8-9 again.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/6/2022 8:40:48 PM)

The year Cousins worked with O'Connell, he did still have 27 TDs, but had the most INTs of his career at 13, and worst QB rating:

"With 27 touchdowns and 4,093 yards passing in 2017, Cousins put up the type of season some fans defend on Twitter. But he also posted career lows as a starter in completion percentage (64.3%), quarterback rating (93.9), and QBR (56.0). Cousins also finished 29th in average depth of target (8.2 yards) and 20th in Pro Football Focus grade."

If you mean he wouldn't give a 100% I don't see that as being his way. A lot of athletes yes, not Cousins.

Miami coach wouldn't tank (even thought the owner was going to pay him to tank) and they traded away everything of value for the highest value; they became relevant by the next season.

Whatever the asset is if you can get the highest value for it you do it...New England has done it for years.

The only obvious way to lessen his ridiculous cap hit is a re-nogotiated contract..

But if you had a GUARANTEED 45 million dollars… on top of the millions you have a.ready banked. What would you do?

Does Cusins strike you as a “ what’s best for the team” guy?

Mr. Throw it into the stands or out of the endzone in crunch time is not what I call a team friendly, smart, QB.

Adequate.

Impressive?
No.

He likes KOC..

big deal..

Rework that boat anchor contract and start shopping him around..
