I don't think KOC can even sign before the Superbowl. Donatell isn't under contract to anyone, so the Vikings can sign him any time they want.

Would he sign without a HC in place?

I don't know why people thought Andre Patterson was going to remain. He's a long time friend of Zimmer, and both the defense and the defensive line have been 'meh', at best, for two years now.

The Zimmer relationship alone meant he wasn't going to be retained imo. #Skol #Vikings

I think this is a valid point. Yeah, the line looks great when you have a total freak like Hunter on it, but how many "named" Linemen have we brought in only to have them underachieve the past few years?

The defense as a whole has stunk the last two years.

If you are arguing Patterson did a worse coaching job in 2020 (24th ranked defense) with Stephen Johnson Watts Odenigbo Wonnum Watts Willekes Ngakoue (6 games) and 2021 (30th ranked defense) with Hunter (7 games) Pierce (6 games) Tomlinson Richardson Wonnum Watts Griffen (6 games?) ...

than he did in 2019 (before the defensive collapse) with Hunter Joseph Stephen Griffen on a 14th ranked defense ...

OK. Who wouldn't?

I'm just not sure how you single out the job he's been doing the last two years given everything else that's been going on.

And given everything else the last two years, I would not dismiss the job he did for years on a top 5 defense.

But yeah ... Should Patterson get some credit for the last two years? Sure. How much? Not sure.

Not saying its his fault our defense stunk. Just tempering some of the "we really need to keep Patterson" or even the "we should make him DC" talk of the past few weeks.

I'd rather let the new DC pick all his assistants.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/10/2022 5:32:29 PM)

Several DL have stated that Patterson helped their game. I am not sure how that would translate to DC and schemes, he seems more like a good specialist at pass rush, to me.

Ed Don't tell, I mean Donate ll, had good numbers with Denver, I believe they were 8th with passing yardage, 3rd with points. I think points is way more important, would like to see a defense that scores points and gets lots of turnovers.

Can we fault Patterson, really no way to tally that. You can only mold the clay you are given. Still, when you clean house, most everything gets the boot.

Vikings hiring former Bears and Texans, University of Texas, Florida and Tennessee defensive line coach Chris Rumph as their defensive line coach, according to league sources @PFN365

I mean ...

O'Connell is going to show up on Monday with some ideas about who he wants on his staff ... only to have a bunch of dudes (his fully completed staff) jump out from behind couches and doors and crap yelling, 'Surprise!!!'

That Adofo-Mensah character is such a pranskter.

The #Vikings are retaining wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell, per source. He will stay on with Kevin O'Connell's new staff to continue his work with Justin Jefferson and Co.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/10/2022 9:19:21 PM)

I’m glad KOC is keeping him. Obviously Jefferson is a star, but I was really impressed with KJ’s improvement. And I thought Ihmir Smith-Marsette looked very good in limited action.

Prob a bad move going a diff direction here
Only position group I can recall standing up for their coach

The bottom line is that the coach needs to be able to pick his own staff. One report said that head coaching candidates usually have a short list of assistant coaches and pitch an entire coaching staff when they interview.

As far as Patterson; some would point out that Andre developed a raw, incredibly talented player like Hunter into the sack machine that he became. You could also look to the Vikings continuing to apply pressure and getting sacks this year after Hunter went down. It wasn't until Griffin went off the deep end that the pass rush evaporated this year.

Bottom line is that he was a great position coach for a lot of years, but his departure won't leave this unfillable void. There are other good D line coaches and KOC should be able to pick his staff.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/11/2022 8:31:14 AM)

A new staff hopefully most of it nailed down this next week. Alot of heavy lifting on the roster in the next four weeks.

This thing is evolving from an amorphous blob into a precision killing machine quickly.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/11/2022 9:13:57 AM)

Not so sure I am against this:
If the #Vikings DO trade Kirk Cousins, Marcus Mariota would be the perfect, economical bridge QB to Mond/Rookie QB TBD.

It might affect JJeff's value

Some coordinators get scooped up as HCs. Our DC Patterson to DL with Giants and DC A. Zimmer back to mowing dad’s lawn tells all we need to know about our staff last year.

The Vikings are building their entire coaching staff out of Broncos and Bears

Townsend played cornerback in the league for 13 seasons and has been coaching since 2011. He was the Bears’ secondary coach for the past three years.

Not necessarily. He could line up as a 3-4 linebacker. He has the athletic ability to do it. Barr could also fit into a 3-4 lb position.

Yeah, Hunter would be a terror as a stand-up edge.

Actually, the opposite.

Watch out rest of the NFL. Hunter would/is going to wreck havoc on offenses in a 3-4.

Don't panic, my friend. He has the physical ability and instincts to be a nasty 3-4 lb. Look at Lawrence Taylor. Hunter compares nicely to him, both in terms of size and physical ability. I don't like the 3-4 defense. But, if we go that way, Hunter is going to be fine. I'm more worried about who is available at nt in that formation. Pierce has not been reliable in that spot.

I was thinking more like a longer version of Nick Bosa. Hunter is so athletic, I actually think he'd thrive in a 3-4 scheme but who knows for sure? Maybe he won't feel comfortable with the transition but I like the idea if he is.
