ORIGINAL: Phil Riewer Andre Patterson is joining the NYG Coaching Staff. Ted Glover @purplebuckeye · 40m I don't know why people thought Andre Patterson was going to remain. He's a long time friend of Zimmer, and both the defense and the defensive line have been 'meh', at best, for two years now. The Zimmer relationship alone meant he wasn't going to be retained imo. #Skol #Vikings I think this is a valid point. Yeah, the line looks great when you have a total freak like Hunter on it, but how many "named" Linemen have we brought in only to have them underachieve the past few years? The defense as a whole has stunk the last two years. If you are arguing Patterson did a worse coaching job in 2020 (24th ranked defense) with Stephen Johnson Watts Odenigbo Wonnum Watts Willekes Ngakoue (6 games) and 2021 (30th ranked defense) with Hunter (7 games) Pierce (6 games) Tomlinson Richardson Wonnum Watts Griffen (6 games?) ... than he did in 2019 (before the defensive collapse) with Hunter Joseph Stephen Griffen on a 14th ranked defense ... OK. Who wouldn't? I'm just not sure how you single out the job he's been doing the last two years given everything else that's been going on. And given everything else the last two years, I would not dismiss the job he did for years on a top 5 defense. But yeah ... Should Patterson get some credit for the last two years? Sure. How much? Not sure. Not saying its his fault our defense stunk. Just tempering some of the "we really need to keep Patterson" or even the "we should make him DC" talk of the past few weeks. I'd rather let the new DC pick all his assistants. I agree, he had to go. The bottom line is that the coach needs to be able to pick his own staff. One report said that head coaching candidates usually have a short list of assistant coaches and pitch an entire coaching staff when they interview. As far as Patterson; some would point out that Andre developed a raw, incredibly talented player like Hunter into the sack machine that he became. You could also look to the Vikings continuing to apply pressure and getting sacks this year after Hunter went down. It wasn't until Griffin went off the deep end that the pass rush evaporated this year. Bottom line is that he was a great position coach for a lot of years, but his departure won't leave this unfillable void. There are other good D line coaches and KOC should be able to pick his staff.
