Missed the game but glad to hear Mond impressed.

Not sure unloading Mattison is a good idea. We all know about Cook's injury history and Mattison is a proven back that can shoulder a heavy work load. Kene isn't. Chandler could be but 17 game season compared to college takes an adjustment period.

Pauldiercks1 -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2022 8:35:44 AM)

Maybe I don't have the details accurate but I did hear something about the Vikings not wanting to hurt Mond's confidence. They purposely put him out later to perform with lesser competition. I don't think with too many good QB's that has been an issue.

I wasn't that impressed with Mond. He look ok against players that may or may not make teams and a simplistic offense. Christian Ponder excelled in these situations.
He may get to be a decent backup but I would not say I was overly impressed no. He certainly missed some things out there that he shouldn't have.

Remember who Mond is throwing to...Albert Wilson was more or less his top receiver and Ish. KJ played a few snaps but that was with Mannion. Trishton Jackson and Davidson were open and looked good but it was also against 2s and 3s.

The big key is were the checks called correctly and was everyone lined up when Mond was in---I only remember a time or two where they didn't snap the ball with less than 5 seconds on the clock.

I was watching Bisi a bit; he is a smooth route runner but I am more impressed with Trishton Jackson....there is a ton of young depth at WR.

Could consider getting Sloter back, he wants to come back to Minnesota:

we have to remember that o'connell is a rookie play-caller, too...during his post-game presser the head coach mentioned that working on the process was important in this game - play-calling, huddle, breaking, lining up....

I think we will see major improvements in play calling...not only the play being called but getting it in so they aren't setting up with 8 seconds left on the play clock. They seemed to be really fast getting the call in.

drviking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2022 9:25:00 AM)

random thoughts

Bradbury needs to be gone, he was barely sufficient against their backups, and when we were inside the 5, no push at all

Ingram looks good

Mannion is pointless

Mond's stats look better than his play, IMO (i know everyone is in love with him this morning), but I just dont see much there, better than Mannion though

the rookie LB seemed to be all over the place

I thought the double call on Boothe was weird, they didnt show the replay much, so maybe i missed something

I think Mond wasn't given playing time last year so it is nice to see something and him given a chance.

I don't know if it was his checks or play calls but I don't just look at the passing stats. Sometimes line checks and handing the ball off can make a difference. He seemed to handle everything way better than last year. To a point where he can be a #2.

I would rather have him a 2 and grab someone that can be a better 3 than Mannion. AJ McCarron or Blaine.

I think Mond surprised everyone who declared him a bust without seeing him play. Also 5% seems a bit high for Manion. I don't know if he has the support of anyone besides Cousins.

Its a good point. Expectations were low; also, in comparison to Mannion; also, against 2nd to 3rd string and roster bubblers.

Even so … I thought he looked pretty good for where he’s at. More important than the arm strength which he obviously has, the TDs were early timing throws, the good throw to Chisena was early … although he looked like he’s processing slow, those throws give you hope.

At least he’s back on the ‘developmental project’ track. Hopefully this buys him some time in preseason games 2-3 for further evaluation.

I’m not sure, he’s definitely not ready for #2 and we might bring in someone else. How can we not?

I think we will know more after the next game. I was actually impressed how well organized the team looked....Raiders have already played a game and we didn't seem as rusty.

drviking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2022 9:53:09 AM)

I am not sure what to do with Mond

He has some nice skills/talents

Overall, the game didnt 'look too big' for him, which is good

Ideally, for me, he would be the QB3 developmental situation. And, at least now, I could imagine a QB being developed with this staff

That being said, I really only want 2 QBs on the roster because i am greedy with my RBs and WRs, (especially RB because, Mattison is a FA and i would like to get Cook's cap hit down)

of course, if there is any chance that Mond could be a quality QB2, you dump a 2nd string RB or WR

its a good point,

i know we had a 12 man situation, but with 80 on the roster and special teams being so fluid, i can get around that

drviking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2022 9:58:06 AM)

I see JC Tretter tweeted complaints about the field in Chicago, saying the league needs to step in...

I was not a big believer in the NFLPA union being a reason why teams are not signing him....but, maybe there is something to it

I know there were games last year where it seemed like the team didn't even practice during the week...to see the offense at the line with 15 seconds on the play clock is refreshing for me.

The rookie playcalling comment; Wes Phillips and O'Connell get a thumbs up from me. They seem ahead of our rookie playcaller (Kubiak) last year at this time. I think both the Defense and the Offense seemed way more organized.

drviking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2022 10:41:45 AM)

I wanted to see some more punt returns, wish our D could have forced a few more

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2022 10:55:38 AM)

I think it's true that Mond surprised. It wasn't known that he was better than Mannion. It was a low bar but we hadn't seen much. But he has developed into something at least intriguing. I agree that we should still be looking for a better #2 and Mannion doesn't deserve it over him.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2022 10:58:08 AM)

RE: the double penalty on Booth. I've seen 2 penalties on the same guy a bunch but they enforced both [:-] Didn't even know that was a thing.

I would be ok with unloading Mattison for a pick/player at this point. Your point about the workload is solid but, to me at least, this is the Gophers last year. Did we have a guy that could carry the load? Nope. But, what we had, was about 6 guys that could collectively carry the load. That's what yesterday looked like to me.

Here's the thing though. They trotted Manion out against that lesser comp in the 4th and he still didn't look as good as Mond. And, btw, JMO, but Mond didn't look like a savior. He just looked better than what the media has made him out to be this year. We still need a lot more but it was encouraging.

I think Cook is really good, however i would LOVE to see him with less workload

Its a difficult balance, but putting him in a rotation would be good, IMO, and I think there is more opportunity to find times to 'pull our starters' if we dont sit on a 4 point lead, like our recent trend has been

drviking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2022 11:10:19 AM)

then comes the debate about spending too much money on a RB that should be in a rotation

which is a legit topic in a salary cap league, IMO

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2022 11:11:46 AM)

I’m hoping I won’t have to endure 17 nail biters or 7/8 nail biters at home games..

The turtle with a 2 point lead offense of the past 5 years was brutal.

I can't remember the couple of safe first down plays but I remember a poor Mannion throw on two of them...easy 1st down pass and catches on 1st down.

That is what I am looking forward too. Turtling is running into the pile on first down.

I remember TE and RB with a ball thrown to them with no room last year....I saw a difference with the scheme yesterday that gave easy run and catches for TE and RB....Hmm.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2022 11:16:09 AM)

Yep, DrV..

I’m not sold on the “franchise” Running back, any longer.

The game has changed, if your OL can make blocks, pretty much any RB with talent and moves will break off a game changer.

Paying millions of dollars a year, to one player, to run the human enema play 15 times a game is a waste of time and money.
