Looks like it's down to two finalists for the Vikings GM:

I don’t see a lot of positives from hiring a defensive coach.

If he buys a home run for the OC another team with just offer him an HC job and we will be Mike Tomlin’d again.

I wouldn't say we were Schurmur'd after 2017. Or Stephanski'd after 2019.

So isn't Raheem Morris a defensive dude, meaning with successful offenses here to OC carousel would continue? Unless say Pat Shurmur is available, unlikely he's getting another look as HC.

Raheem Morris Isn't Just Another Defensive Coach

BECOMING AN OFFENSIVE COACH

Simply chatting with some offensive coordinators does not an offensive coach make. But when Dan Quinn hired Kyle Shanahan in Atlanta, they brought Morris along to coach the defensive backs and coordinate the coverages. A couple of years in, receivers coach Terry Robiskie was hired to coordinate the Tennessee Titans’ offense, leaving a vacancy. Morris ended up with that job, flipping from defense to offense.

Morris continually picked Robiskie’s brain but also applied his defensive knowledge. He taught receivers how to attack classic cornerback and safety techniques. Morris understood which coverages were weak to what and when a coach would call them. After all, he was the passing defense coordinator the previous year. He gave invaluable scouting reports to his offense.

This approach is proven and offers a refreshing contrast to Zimmer’s style of challenging the offense. Zimmer revealed the entire offensive practice plan to the defense on one occasion. The defense called its plays knowing the offense’ plan, leading to a terrible day on offense. Zimmer lit them up for their failure. As a head coach, Morris would equip his offense to succeed rather than challenge them not to fail.

Morris would eventually become the passing-game coordinator, rounding out his experience. In a pass-first league, Morris’ value comes from someone intimately familiar with passing offense and passing defense at the NFL level. There aren’t many with that much experience who aren’t already head coaches themselves.

----------

Morris is not just another defensive coach. The vast majority of defensive coaches don’t spend several years coordinating the offensive side of the ball. Defensive coordinators don’t spend their entire careers exposing themselves to offensive experience. If Zimmer’s fatal flaw was an over-emphasis of defense and ignorance of offense, you might be tempted to go find someone who over-emphasizes offense. But neglecting defense is just a different way to fall below .500 (just look at Sean Payton‘s mid-decade skid pre-Dennis Allen).

Well, that is something interesting to know.

Last night's gave should have moved DeMeco Ryans up a few notches, and Nathaniel Hackett down a few notches, as far as HC consideration.

I didn't want Hackett anyway, we'll see how Ryans does next week.

TJSweens -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/23/2022 7:49:38 AM)

I hope the Vikings don't base their decision on one game.

marty -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/23/2022 8:33:06 AM)

You certainly don't want to base it on one game, but if the guy calls a very poor game, and that game was a playoff game, I think you would want to strongly take that into consideration.

Except maybe the Dallas/'9ers game ...

Bill Jandro -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/23/2022 10:14:54 AM)

Anybody with half a brain would get results from the 9er defense.

1st Salah and now Ryans.

marty -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/23/2022 10:28:53 AM)

The 49ers 2ndary played above their heads, helped by a poor Packers offensive gameplan, and extremely cold weather.

It's sorta like last season, when the Vikes won at Lambau. The strong winds took away the Packers passing game, and Cook ran awesomely.

Todd M -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/23/2022 10:50:56 AM)

Hackett/Poles

BosViking -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/23/2022 1:46:25 PM)

Sounds like we can expect a 2nd interview for Todd Bowles:

Did he call that coverage for Kupp’s last catch?

Todd M -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/23/2022 6:45:47 PM)

I can understand doing 1st round interviews wo a gm in place but not 2nd's.

I hope he's not a top candidate.

sounds like a miscommunication.... Bucs veteran LB Lavonte David said something along the lines of "some people received the call, but others didn't"

not that that makes it any better

Yea I just saw that…

So not gonna hold it against him, having the incredible TB bail you out of a 27-3 hole..

He called a good game..

That one play… that dropped his stock a lot of places..

Props to rams for not taking a Denny…

ronhextall -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/23/2022 7:25:21 PM)

Failed defensive retread might work but they will have to prove it quickly.

He better hit a 500 foot home run with the OC.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/23/2022 7:29:32 PM)

I’m just gonna wait…

At this point.. I’m more concerned with losing 20 lbs of belly fat, than who the next head coach is…

My last blood tests were so out of whack..

Anyway..

Nvm..

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/23/2022 7:33:47 PM)

I don’t really want a “ former defensive ‘guru’ from xxxxxxxx” named Vikings head coach…

Ricky J -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/23/2022 7:44:41 PM)

I don't see how it matters. What matters is how you handles being a head coach.

If the head coach is an offensive genius you don’t have to worry about him leaving.

That’s my main concern.

Brad H -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/24/2022 8:03:57 AM)

I'd prefer not to go in a retread direction.

I'd prefer not to go in a retread direction.

Let alone a 58 year old retread. I think we have gone the old defensive coordinator route before.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/24/2022 10:09:04 AM)

Yeah but then it brings up a whole different concern.

Leftwich? He was "NTG" with Winston and Fitzpatrick. With Brady he suddenly became "the guy". Weird how that worked out for him.

Moore? Just check out the biggest moment of his coaching career so far and how that turned out.

Daboll? This is where i'd kick the tires.

Bieniemy? Not sure I want another Reid guy that doesn't call plays

O'Connell? Really unproven and how much of that is talent alone?

Ryans? How the Jets doing?

So much on the line. Best guess is the Wilf's jack this up for a couple of years trying. Sucks badly but it's a sad reality facing us and ready to punch us in the mouth repeatedly.

TJSweens -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/24/2022 11:42:19 AM)

What about Hackett (Packer stink and all) or Morris?

I think Hackett did a ton with that GB offense. Adams, Rodgers, and the RB...that is all that was there. MN has more weapons....the corpse of Mercedes Lewis was a target of a play?
