I am more freaked out by Smiths back. Bill is so in awe how the new GM is leveraging the cap he still can’t understand or focus on anything but Pierces age. Similar to Brads focus on 2018-19 two minute offense or cb make the defense

That's all you got? Projecting your age love onto me? Pretty bad, even for you.

"Leveraging the cap", LOL!

Like Kramer saying "They just write it off" without knowing a thing about it.

What are they writing off? Converting a Roster Bonus into a Signing Bonus is a write off to you? I am the one laughing.

Uh, you can't even understand an analogy.

You gotta have corners. If you don't, you aren't stopping anyone in the year 2022.

You can have all of the defensive linemen you want. If you can't cover, you're dead. A great corner will make an average defensive lineman look good. It doesn't work the other way around.

I think the worst part was investing in Alexander and Breeland last year. Took a year of development from Dantzler and Boyd.

Draft 3-4 and go from there. Peterson may be back and New Def Cord may have influence on a couple of FA; some decent players out there yet:

CB Stephon Gilmore 31
CB Bryce Callahan 30 (slot)
CB Patrick Peterson 31
CB K’Waun Williams (slot)
CB Kyle Fuller 30
CB Mike Hughes 25
CB Kevin King 26
CB Chandon Sullivan 25
S Jayron Kearse 28
S Terrell Edmunds 25
S Ronnie Harrison 24
S Deshon Elliot 24
C JC Tretter 31
C Nick Martin 28
G/T Billy Turner 30
G Will Hernandez 26

Nice. Slide free agents sideways into the draft thread since the’ve been quarantined like a bad variant on the sterile FA thread.

The important thing is he got their ages in. Oh how he'd love a hot 21 year old FA.

The site on Daily Norseman has the ages....is that an issue? Most teams do try to get younger except the Lakers.

If you were a talkvikes supervisor ypur deplorable age discrimination would have got you canned long ago.

Baby Pierce Phillips and now this .. you probably put more weight on youth than position.

No, I feel it isn't time to overpay and I was against it for two other veterans also (Smith and Thielen). The replacement player for Pierce was rated better, cheaper, and 3-4 years younger....but apparently you two feel the need to keep your focus and narrative on age.

Bill has a perverse sense of humor.

I defend the rights of all.

You're into ... I don't even want to know ... but I'm sure there's league officials out there working to prevent it.

AND 3-4 years / one season difference is nothing, you treat it like they come from different generations. Phillips has a ways to go to prove he's a long haul starter. He's only done it in spurts.

Za'Darius Smith will be 30 when the season starts and was (still is?) in Minny today. Phil is freaking out [:-]

Just how in the hell are they planning on courting Smith?

With a gift card for Golden Corral?

[Do they even serve liver and onions for an old nfl vet. It has to be mushy and denture friendly, that's for sure].

Hunters roster bonus can be converted at any time.

That's true.

But then what? This move money around / fill it in, move money around / fill it in approach is agonizing.

You seem way to caught up in it. It is done almost every offseason...

Yes, we certainly shouldn't be caught up in it... even after seeing Spielman "leverage the cap" every offseason.

WOW!

FA is supposed to be a fun time. Smith is in town, Tretter probably next, and it is only March 22nd......Kwesi isn't Spielman and KOC isn't Zimmer. Thank God.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: 2022 NFL draft (3/22/2022 10:05:44 AM)

FA is, well, amusing this year with you sending out front office spin to replace actual news.

And where does it say we are ~ $20 million under the cap?

Have you seen the numbers on Thielen's restructure yet? Converting Hunter's Roster to signing bonus can be as much as 12 alone.

It's Brilliant!!!

1. You have a backup that can't win you a coin flip much less a game.
2. You have no QB controversy because we don't want to stress the great selfish god fearing leader too much with "competition".
3. You can avoid giving a young guy a shot.

If he makes the Final 53, maybe we are in for more of same old, same old.

I'm holding out hope we keep guys who can play.

Tom Sykes -> RE: 2022 NFL draft (3/22/2022 11:41:06 AM)

Yeah, meet the new boss …

Mannion was the perfect icon of Spielman’s inadequate QB approach.

We were sold on a fresh new regime with cutting edge ideas …

as far as I can tell, we fans are all extras in a netflix remake of Soylent Green.

It’s actually haha clown funny at this point.

Ok, I was being patient and hoping for some clarity on what the new regime is planning, but it looks to be same old, same old here in MN. The Mannion signing officially put me in the "WTF is going on?!!?!?!?!" category.

I hate the KFC extension, 2 more years of mediocrity. I get there are not better options out there and he essentially has us hogtied into keeping him to remain "competitive" or blowing this up (which is not an option apparently in Wilfville). We just signed up for 2 more years of average. Pushing money down the road, prorating for cap today, just more of the same garbage that got us into this mess. Pay later for an average team today, yippee.

The new management have been really slow to make moves, making no trades to note and not participating in FA at all because of it, other than signing bottom of the barrel "diamonds". They apparently can't decide on what to do, or get what they want in a trade, so they just resort to more of the same by keeping our over-priced guys, adding more years and cap hell and not fixing much of anything. The Mannion signing just straight up pisses me off, that's a slap in the face to anyone who watches football. We have zero hope of winning any game he's in, smart teams have at least someone that can get them average play, maybe even win a game or two but this just reeks of pleasing the room and not rocking the KFC boat. Brutally short sighted.

I don't see this ship turning around soon, I see us flailing bigtime this year with angry fans asking management "what changed!?!?". Blow this shit up already.

NFL mock draft 2022: Mel Kiper's new predictions for all 32 first-round picks, filling team needs after free agency

With the first wave of NFL free agency and a few league-shaking quarterback trades past us, team needs are becoming more clear ahead of the 2022 NFL draft. We've seen which teams have been aggressive in adding veterans and which have sat out free agency (and saved salary-cap space) while looking to a draft class deep with wide receivers and edge rushers.

Let's get into a new post-free-agency first-round mock draft. I did my previous mock right before the combine earlier this month, so this one has some notable changes, with the Seahawks (No. 9) entering the first round and the Texans (No. 13) and Packers (No. 22) adding a second Round 1 selection. Where will the first quarterback go? Could the Lions shake things up at No. 2? And what's the Falcons' plan now?

As a reminder, I'm going to project the top 32 picks based on a combination of my rankings, team needs and what I'm hearing from execs, scouts and coaches in the league. Round 1 begins April 28, which means there's plenty of time for more changes to come.

12. Minnesota Vikings
Trent McDuffie, CB, Washington

The Vikings have used first-round picks on four cornerbacks since 2013. Can you name them all? (OK, fine: They are Xavier Rhodes, Trae Waynes, Mike Hughes and Jeff Gladney.) None of them are on their roster now, and the guys who drafted them -- coach Mike Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman -- are gone, too. This is still a need position for new general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and coach Kevin O'Connell.

McDuffie is the real deal; the stat you'll see most often is that he didn't allow a single touchdown in coverage over the past two seasons, and he goes all out on every play. Expect him to be a Day 1 starter.

Has Rick really left?

They hired a Spielman clone and marketed him as a ivy league analytics guru.

I have a buddy who has been convinced that our ownership is meddling in everything football now and are playing shadow GM. Based on our actions, he may not be wrong which would mean we have a much bigger issue now, if true.

I wonder what Kwesi Spielman and/or ownership has planned next?

ronhextall -> RE: 2022 NFL draft (3/22/2022 12:56:53 PM)

extending Cousins ( I was fine letting him play his final year ) seems like such an odd move.

IMO it really speeds up the "goodwill clock" with the new regime. Hopefully the cap goes up enough for the 2023 season they can still consider just releasing Cousins an option.

The rope is long enough for the new regime to underperform with Cousins for two full seasons and then start over with a rookie QB? In theory they could go 5 years without making the playoffs and not lose their jobs?

bohumm -> RE: 2022 NFL draft (3/22/2022 1:00:19 PM)

Three things:
1) McDuffie is way up on my list, but my list is always long and fungible at this point.

2) I've believed the Wilfs have been the problem for a while now, and the more things play out the more convinced I become. Obviously I have very limited insight, but it certainly fits quite well at this point.

3) I'm in 100% agreement with Phil of late, which is new and noteworthy (to me at least) and rare, so I choose to celebrate. Skol, Phil!!!

Just to really mess with us, they will draft Willis or Pickett at #12.

Nate -> RE: 2022 NFL draft (3/22/2022 3:31:31 PM)

Hicks, Phillips and McGill aren't going to keep anyone up at night. Hicks is a tackler but not a coverer, we'll see how he fares in assignments I guess. Replacing Pierce with Phillips isn't much of a gain IMO other than not being injured. Z Smith can be beastly if healthy, much the same as Hunter so that at least has some excitement to it. Hopefully they remain healthy this year. Our back secondary is majorly hurting though so we better be instantly putting pressure on the QB or we're toast and we still haven't been able to stop the run in a few years. Maybe the new look D-scheme will help but traditionally our DL doesn't penetrate, our LBs don't shed blocks and our secondary plays soft zone, which means we start to tackle folks 4-5 yards past the LOS on runs and give up 8-12 yard passes... Maybe this is all typical early fandom panic, but it sure feels the same, Hope Springs Eternal!

I would be cool with either one of the three (Stingley, Gardner, or McDuffie). Stingley the least of them due to his foot injury, but still better than what we have right now at cb.
