This was a priority for Minnesota, an on-field leader and productivity who handled himself with class in AZ. Per
@caplannfl
, he gets a 2-year deal worth up to $12M.

The #Vikings have agreed to terms with LB Jordan Hicks, source said.

A cool stat about Hicks is that he’s started in 49 straight games. I think that amount of experience is a good sign.

We need at least 8 LBs on roster for a 3/4 defense. We have Kendricks, Lynch and Dye as are only ILBs on roster.

3-4. After looking at a few sites, it appears a 3-4 requires:

Several BIG DEs. Richard Seymour always seems to be the prototype.

A fattie at DT, but we just cut him. He at least looked the part.

OLBs who can set the edge. Undersized DEs. Barr perhaps but he is some sort of voided free agent.

ILBs who are good sized 4-3 MLBs.

So.... there is that.

Baby Pierce Phillips is 6'3 307 (compared to Grandpa Pierce who was 6'0 345)

Hicks is 6'1 236

Kendricks is 6'0 232

Our D is going to be very svelte up the middle.

Phillips seems more 3-4 DE sized than DT.

Its true although the critical age-old question is, does he have enough ‘sand in his pants’?

One unimpeachable twitter expert claims he is one of the strongest players at his position in the league. Lets hope.

Did Barr ever get 49 straight minutes? [>:] An "upgrade" just on availability

Very true. Sounds a lot more scrappy than the ‘cerebral’ Barr also. If nothing else, for my money, Hicks comes in as an over-achiever type … much easier to be patient with than an under-achieving Ziminion type.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: 2022 Free Agency (3/16/2022 11:02:06 AM)

Tomlinson is the closest they have for the 3-4 DT. Watts at 6'5", 307 would seem to be a DE, but he's not quick enough.

Not seeing a 3-4 w/o wholesale changes.

Shewt ... even if we stay in a 4-3.

Throw a C or G bone at the offense and let's go. Defense? A full rack of brontosaur won't do it. We need hordes of players.

Which is why I have been surprised at our pace, not the legal tampering with FAs

but altering the cap to make room.

That is, if we are going to hold to our company dictum about being competitive in 2022.

Maybe its just a platitude to quiet the masses. Maybe, instead of 'Making Us Great Again' (MUGA), our new dictum should be 'Making Us Great Until the Season Starts' (MUCUS).

I'm offtrack I know.

Rick Sosa@sosarick
Adam Thielen’s camp working on a restructure with the Vikings while Danielle Hunter’s situation is a bit more complicated #Vikings

Bill Johanesen -> RE: 2022 Free Agency (3/16/2022 1:04:14 PM)

We signed two mid-tier types, which is about it for that type of talent. Any cap we break free will be used on one-year rental values towards the back half of free agency. Whoever is brought in at CB in particular will go from traditional camp fodder to having a legit chance to stick.

Sure the Cousins cap euphoria from a couple of days ago and talk of SB runs has died down, but signing just one over the hill name will bring MUGA back!

Tom Sykes -> RE: 2022 Free Agency (3/16/2022 1:39:01 PM)

We signed P Berry.

Cards sign Gladney.

Tom Sykes -> RE: 2022 Free Agency (3/16/2022 1:57:21 PM)

Chris Tomasson@christomasson · 1h
And now the #Vikings have just announced they have re-signed punter Jordan Berry. So that would put them back over the cap if they were to officially sign Jordan Hicks today. But as noted they could hold off on Hicks and Harrison Phillips.

And just how does that work ... how do you agree to a deal with FA then ask them to wait to make 'arrangements' before their official signing.

'Yes Mr. Phillips we are offering you $19.5M which we don't actually have ... but we will! You are our #1 free-agent target ... on paper! Get ready to pack and move ... it's practically guaranteed!'

I wonder if Phil is factoring in the time between contract agreement and signing ... towards the age of the player. Pierce might end up being younger.

Tom Sykes -> RE: 2022 Free Agency (3/16/2022 2:51:29 PM)

Also both RB McKissic DE Gregory or reneging on tampering deals.

So, making your FAs wait before singing isn't the best plan.

Again, not sure why didn't we just restructure Smith, Cook Thielen, Hunter, Kendricks to free up money in bonuses before today ... to know what our cap looks like moving forward.

Unless we are trying to work trades, or planning to release etc.

David Levine -> RE: 2022 Free Agency (3/16/2022 3:57:47 PM)

Kevin Seifert@SeifertESPN
In my continuing effort to confirm confirmations of Vikings signings: Add TE Johnny Mundt to a list of that includes DT Harrison Phillips and LB Jordan Hicks. Mundt received a two-year deal that included a $200K signing bonus and $50K workout bonuses in ’22 and ’23.

Chris Tomasson@christomasson
#Vikings getting TE Johnny Mundt likely means that free-agent TE Tyler Conklin will be going elsewhere but that's to have been expected.

Former Ram.

Torn ACL last year.

Reportedly a good blocker. At 233 lbs maybe he's another one of those 'strongest guy in the NFL' types.

Former Packers’ pass rusher Za'Darius Smith is signing a four-year, $35 million deal that has a max value of $50 million with the Baltimore Ravens, per source.

I'm sure he was on pace to totally blow the previous years career highs (4/53/0) out of the water!

David Levine -> RE: 2022 Free Agency (3/16/2022 4:09:13 PM)

KOC quote from before last season:

Tyler Higbee figures to be the No. 1 tight end for the Los Angeles Rams this season, but he won't be the only tight end utilized in the offense. With the departure of Gerald Evere this offseason, Johnny Mundt is in line to receive more playing time in his fifth season with the organization. Kevin O'Connell, the offensive coordinator of the Rams, believes Mundt could be a "vertical threat" in the new-look offense that has Matthew Stafford under center.

That, despite Mundt being seen as more of a blocking tight end due to his lack of production as a receiver.

"I think he's seen like that because he's really excelled at that skillset, but Matthew and I were talking about him today, actually, just how much of a vertical threat he can be," O'Connell said. "We all saw last year against Chicago, really in a week where we needed him, his playmaking ability with the ball in his hands, yards after catch, different ways we can activate him in our offense. And then, oh, by the way, he's one of the best, in my opinion, on the edge blocking at the Y position, F position, however you activate those guys."

The game O'Connell is speaking about came in Week 7 of the 2020 season. Higbee was sidelined with an injury, which led to Mundt seeing an increased role in the offense. Mundt would finish the game with three receptions for 48 yards, including a 34-yard reception that he caught over the middle of the field from Jared Goff in the second quarter.

Tom Sykes -> RE: 2022 Free Agency (3/16/2022 4:23:31 PM)

Hasn't the league year started?

What's up with Thielen and our cap?

And through 6 games that year the vertical threat had 1 catch for 9 yards!

Tricky KOC and his triple reverse smokescreens.

Are there any halfway decent guards, centers, or cbs left for us to get? Somebody wake up the K's, please.

I think we're still in the "legal tampering" period.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: 2022 Free Agency (3/16/2022 4:46:31 PM)

From VikingsTerritory, which is just a blogger writing: The Vikings can convert Danielle Hunter’s $18M (5th day of the new league year) roster bonus into a signing bonus automatically without player consent. They have automatic conversion rights.

Add millions from Cousins to the dead cap for 2024/25.

My guess is they don't want to simply convert Hunter's bonus because of dead cap problems later. After all, we still have most of this season and all of 2023 to go. Hence the delays/complications.

Free agency proper started about two hours ago. We are, or were for a split second, at/below the cap limit at 3:00 CST.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: 2022 Free Agency (3/16/2022 4:54:04 PM)

Maybe we got someone to agree that their contract would be 50 cents at 2:59 with a yellow sticky promise it would revert back to what it was at 3:01. I jest, more likely we kicked some cap down the road unless Theilen has a new contract where he makes less. Maybe his agent said not to publicize it, to save face and all.
