Ideally we move Russell, but DLo/Ant/McDaniels/Towns/Gobert might be really, really good.

D'Lo will be better with Gobert.

He’s had his most success with a big that can set screens and then roll to the hoop. And Gobert is a lot better at both than Jarrett Allen.

Hopefully KAT will take Nine 3PA/Game.

Starting 5 is formidable for sure. I like KAT at the 4.

Will we have enough depth?

We have roster spots to fill now.

Currently its Anderson, Nowell, Prince, Reid and McLaughlin.

Zach Lowe says we're looking at the Martin Twins. Either (or both) would be really nice "3&D" additions.

They're nice players. 6'6, 205, 6'10 wingspan. Both have been plus defenders all 3 years in the league, but they both took a big step up on offense last year.

Cody: 26 MPG: 8 PPG (48/38/70), 4.0 RPG, 2.5 APG, 2.0 Stocks.
Caleb: 23 MPG: 9 PPG (51/41/76), 3.8 RPG, 1.1 APG, 1.5 Stocks.

Five players and four 1st round draft picks. It's hard not to make the predictable Hersch Walker comparison

The big difference being that one player can actually transform an NBA team.

Screw it. I'm just going with it now. We may win a title, it may blow up in our faces, but we're a hell of a lot more interesting than we were a couple hours ago.

My attitude exactly.
Honestly I'm in shock. I never thought we'd make a deal this huge. I don't know if it's for better or worse.
Go Wolves. If anybody is going to SL I'll see you there for the first two games.
DL can you at least give me some advice about how to get tickets where to stay that kind of stuff? I'm driving there from the Flagstaff area. I'll have my own car.

Rudy Gobert also thinks there are 52 states?

Yep, the 48 contiguous, Alaska, Hawaii, delusion and denial.

KAT is going to be around for a while longer it seems.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34176251/karl-anthony-towns-minnesota-timberwolves-agree-4-year-224-million-supermax-extension

Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns has agreed on a four-year, $224 million supermax extension, his agent, Jessica Holtz of CAA Basketball told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The deal begins with the 2024-25 season and delivers Towns' total contract value to six years and $295 million.

So about $50 million per. Tall cotton!

Fortunately its in before the next big cap hike which will end up normalizing the money quite a bit.

Ah, piece of cake then.

TJSweens -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/1/2022 9:18:20 PM)

The consensus among the sports media is that the Wolves got taken to the cleaners.

twinsfan -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/1/2022 9:36:37 PM)

This was all A-Rod. He's a meddler.

twinsfan -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/1/2022 9:39:04 PM)

This is the guy that started the COVID outbreak when he rubbed his dirty hands all over every mic in the press room. Sad really.

TJSweens -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/1/2022 10:12:31 PM)

I'm trying to talk myself off the ledge on this deal. The players we sent out are all role players and very replaceable. Vando is the only one I will really miss and they essentially replaced him with Anderson. Utah supposedly wanted McDaniels and Connolly wouldn't give him up. I assume that had something to do with the amount of first round picks in the deal.

The Wolves got a lot better in the short term. I don't know if Gobert makes them enough better to make it worthwhile.

bstinger -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/1/2022 10:18:20 PM)

Right, the quality of the players we gave wasn't much. If the starting 5 stays pretty healthy we should be fine. If we get many injuries we could be pretty thin quickly. If this group is successful the next few picks will be late 1st rounders.

There is some concern with 2 7fters in the modern NBA. This is a wing driven league. If opponents go small, how do we counter. One of our 2 expensive bigs might have to sit.

McDaniels needs to blossom.

On the 7 footers, I think Towns makes it work with his ability to put the ball on the floor and hit the 3. Gobert is also a very athletic big.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/2/2022 12:46:59 AM)

Wow.

I was driving all day so I just saw the notification come up on my phone that we got Gobert, but didn’t see the details until just now. It was stunning enough when I first saw it. Now it’s just jaw dropping.

The Herschel trade came to my mind too. In elaborating on the trade with my wife I said I can’t recall another NBA trade like this, and in all of sport the only one close is the Walker trade.

So much for my prediction that they just make tweaks this year and splash next year. This was a tidal wave splash.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/2/2022 1:04:38 AM)

Agree that the players we gave up were not that difficult to part with, once the initial shock wears off. Bev gave the team toughness and competitiveness but is getting up in age, Beasley is a mostly effective but somewhat streaky 3 point shooter, Vando was most surprising, his motor was so refreshing, but I guess he was deemed too much of an offensive liability. Bolmaro, meh. Kessler, obviously unnecessary now.

But the draft picks. My God. I guess they assume this is the start of a dynasty so the picks will be at end of the round.

Bill Jandro -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/2/2022 7:31:48 AM)

The amount of assets we gave up is jaw dropping.

Like DL mentioned that kind of package should get Durrant.

Rudy Gobert? You got to be kidding me.

wrh -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/2/2022 8:16:28 AM)

OK, I certainly am not going to argue the trade is not a huge gamble. That said as DL mentioned, in the NBA one player can significantly impact a team much more than in the NFL. Drafting KG was what drew me to the TWolves. As for H Walker comparisons, not in my book. The Walker trade stands alone because Mike Lynn didn't even understand what he did -- thought it was players or draft choices and turns out it was both. Now if TWolves end up owing 3 more first round choices we have a comparison, right now it is just a block bluster trade betting that KAT and Gobert can play well together, ANT and McDaniels seriously develop and the team has good to excellent health for the window that exists for the next 5 years or so.

I believe there is a good chance the TWolves will be competing with the elite teams in the league for the next couple of years and we will get a chance for KAT and ANT to prove they can elevate their games (or not) in the playoffs. More understandable when considering this period should be KAT's peak

Bill Jandro -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/2/2022 8:40:22 AM)

Hate that Pat Bev was included.

Forget about the draft picks.

Just be worried about Pat Bev closing out the Wolves in playoffs in Utah and telling anyone who will listen to "take they azz home"

The thing about Beverley is he kind of wears out his welcome.

He gave KAT and crew some good advice to help their games. But, after a while I think he kind of wears on guys.

Probably was a perfect time for him to go.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/2/2022 9:42:15 AM)

The trade is absolutely Herschel-like in terms of quantity of assets given up for 1 guy.

Yes I get the difference in the sports. There is almost no way a single football player can be as transformational as a basketball player. Maybe a HOF caliber QB, but even then he needs a LOT of other things to click. But a RB? I know it was a different era where RBs were heavily valued…now a star RB might get you a 4th round draft pick. But even then, I remember thinking what a huge risk this was for a RB. Herschel needed to deliver Super Bowls. Multiple ones. And that seemed like a lot to ask.

Same with Gobert. Like Mike Lynn, this was a trade by a man desperate to make his mark now at any cost. And Gobert needs to deliver championships or it’s a bust.

Fortunately in basketball the odds of success are slightly better.

A couple of points:

Durant is about 4 years older than Gobert and has played a total of 90 games in the last 3 years.
We are talking about 4 picks that will likely be in the 25-32 range.

The Wolves gambled 5 picks to create a 5+ year window with a core of KAT, Ant and Gobert. Only time will tell if it was worth it.

A few other items: I think Gobert's skills will be diminished less with age. So I think he will still be more than solid at the end of his current contract. Jaden McDaniels should be added to the core. And with this window, I'd like to think there might be free agents willing to come to MN who otherwise would not.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/2/2022 12:29:54 PM)

When does Ant get paid? I think after that, the ability to build a rounded roster is going to be hampered. In the future there may/should be increases to the cap, but that lends itself to every other team having more money to throw at FAs.

As far as attracting FAs, you've got dollars, location, ability to win. The first two are projected to be unfavorable. The third is unknown but barring injury I think they will do well.

We basically need to be a contender the next handful of years for this to make any sense.

Contender? Hell, we need to win a championship for this to make sense.

Absolutely.

Nearly a half billion dollars for two bigs as well as four lost first rounders (with the obligatory loss of 'several' players that always gets thrown in) are part of this era. It will be labeled a failure even if you made it to several finals but didn't walk away with even just one chip.

The money thing is more about normalizing existing contracts.

After the new TV deal we’ll see max contracts take a significant jump, and KAT and Gobert’s deals will take up less of the cap.

It won’t mean signing big name FA’s, but it should allow us to keep our good players and add using exceptions.
