When I recently texted #Vikings safety Harrison Smith to ask about his contract situation, he simply sent back this photo of Prince. Since Prince is a Minnesota icon, I asked if that means he’s sticking around. But I didn’t hear back.

ALL THE PIECES ARE IN PLACE

(But for real, Mullens is a solid quality veteran backup. Glad to have him back. Now find the QB of the Future.)

The Vikings are expected to re-sign QB Nick Mullens, who backed-up Kirk Cousins last season, per source.

Vikings have ZERO chance to be competitive this year with that defense and the lack of cap space and draft picks. Why bring Cousins back for one more year so they can go 8-9? Trade Cousins, get some more picks or maybe Trey Lance...worst case you go 4-13 and we get a top pick next year.

Did you say the same thing last year at this time Jeff? I think the roster is already better not having Thielen and Kendricks. This isn't all about draft picks--trades, FA, UDFA, and the draft. Give them a little time.

Every time they replace younger talent it is a step in the right direction. They will have room for FA. 2024 cap space is the big thing.

It was a similar situation last year, but the team had more money and decided to run it back again when they paid Hunter and then signed Smith. And they did have draft help last year...double the picks they have this year. There is no point on bringing Cousins back when he only helps them to mediocrity. And if Rodgers can be traded, so can Cousins. It has to be done eventually...why not just bottom out and get better draft picks for 2024?

ronhextall -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2023 8:15:29 AM)

Some posters seem to want to go 0-17, get the best QB, try it for a year or two and if doesn't work out go 0-17 again.

Outside Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, and Lawerence no team is completely satisfied at QB and there certainly is no proven formula for identifying and developing the "next stud QB".

The Vikings are like 27/28 other teams, trying their best.

Some posters want to keep Kirk Cousins until he is 40 and be a .500 team. Safer play, I guess, but I'd rather be the Bears right now than the Vikings.

Sort of possible maybe so defensive starters:

DL: Phillips, Tonga, Davenport

LB: Hunter, Asamoah, Hicks (renegotiated), Jones

S: Bynum, Cine/Metellus

CB: Booth, First-round pick/Evans, Shelley?

Doesn’t exactly instill confidence. I really don't understand bringing Hicks back. 25% of the time he was in position to make the play. 25% of the time he was in position to chase the play and get it the pile after someone else made the play. 25% he took himself out of the play. 25% of the time he got trucked

Much rather have Garoppolo vs Daniel Jones. I doubt you find a better "bang for your buck QB".

I'd take Jones.

Wow...silence

Kwesi sucks.

Gotta agree. Don't understand that one. I don't see people flocking to purchase that jersey.

From atozsports:

The Minnesota Vikings just made a sneaky, yet very solid move on the first day of free agency: the team is going to sign former Baltimore Ravens tight end Josh Oliver to a new deal.

Per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Vikings are giving Oliver a three-year deal worth $21 million. $10.75 million of that is guaranteed and there are included incentives that can bump the deal up to $24 million.

As Garafolo notes in his tweet, Oliver is one of the NFL's best blocking tight ends. He's the ultimate compliment to Pro Bowl tight end T.J. Hockenson, who is one of the NFL's best receiving tight ends.

Now, the Vikings have an incredible 1-2 punch at a position that can really hurt NFL defenses when utilized correctly. Hockenson is actually on OK run blocker, as well. So, it's not like the Vikings will be giving too much away if/when just one or both players are on the field.

Is Garafolo aware of how bad our defense is?

Back up TE. A real needle mover indeed.

So you are expecting needle-moving acquisitions?

How many? Just roughly.

I'll start with one

Brad H -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2023 8:29:36 AM)

Memo to Kwesi: We had one of the worst defenses in the league last season.

TB, NE, KC, or MN? Which Defense?

If you are talking about the Vikings:
He doesn't need the memo....grabbed one of the best Def minds and poached a player from one of the best defensive teams.

3.5 million on this years cap....other moves coming.

FB is probably our next move.

I was hopeful for the best blocking punter in the league.

Brad H -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2023 8:37:41 AM)

Given the first 12 months, I'm all for signing a backup GM.

Seconded.

There's co-owners, assistant coaches all up and down the board, assistant trainers...yet here's Kwesi doing Kwesi things unfettered.

Todd I will ask you the same question I asked Jeff....were you acting the same last year in the first few days of FA? The main takeaways from this is getting talent in their prime and shedding past their prime talent and/or replacing a player like Cam with another CB at that 2.5-3 million price on this years budget.

I am most bothered by the Dalvin T contract which now hits us for 7 million this year out of all that transpired the last few days.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2023 9:14:47 AM)

IIRC I wasn't too thrilled with how last year started. Until they courted Z. And really...for all that was worth.

I want out GM to start making actual smart moves not moves that he thinks are so smart .

Not taking Hamilton and bending over for a trade so he could grab extra character/ injury/speculitive talent guys. Hits this FA playing checkers with a blocking TE (again) and grabs a guy coming off a down year making it a push (maybe) for the guy you took a chance on last year.
Kwesi has shown his colors.

I’m all for busting on Kwesi’s chops.

And I say this between my own volcanic psychotic over-reactions …

the league year hasn’t even started yet. Its little a early to encourage Brad’s one dimensional defeatism.

I don't think it is like that. The Cine injury was unlucky more than a bad pick. Pivoting to ZED Smith last year, signing Phillips, and trading for Hock were genius and somehow was enough to get us to 13-4. More moves and a possible trade (ZED) will reveal more.

Again the cap number on Oliver is 3.5 million and there was bidding.

Just like last year there is more salary cap then it looks....2024 is clean and they have some extensions they have to do.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2023 9:31:38 AM)

I don't value the Hock trade as much as others.

He's good about to be paid like he's really good.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2023 9:36:25 AM)

.2024 is clean

I thought they renegotiated with Hicks but haven't seen anything on it, perhaps he will be cut.

There will be a couple of FAs and say two other draft picks in the mix. But just guessing that for the most part the D is set.
