Smith wanted to become a Dr. He quit football at OSU one year because of the lack of letting him work on his degree (s).

And this has nothing to do with you posting the bolded, just a me thing: I always find it amusing the number of young people I've known that say they want to be a doctor. Smith also retired early because he needed another major knee surgery and he is a very smart guy; wanted to be able to walk w/o pain when older.

Always liked Smith. Like Barry Sanders, he never made a show when he scored. He was perfect for that OL... run through the massive holes and let his world-class speed take over.

What happened after that can only be described as HE TOOK A FREAKING KNEE! Two of the worst moments in Vikings history, and they both happened within a matter of minutes. For a Vikings fan, they were akin to a Bill Buckner moment. As I've said many times, I could be on my death bed with no remaining cognitive skills, and I will always remember where I was when Dennis Green opted to take a knee. Aliso Viejo, CA, on my cousin's couch. My cousin and I both looked at each other with a blank stare on our face and said at the same time; "what the fuc& is he doing?" We can rehash all of the bad moments and none of them will ever compare. The McClannahan fumble. The push off. Running the wrong way. The Darrin Nelson drop. Hershel Walker trade. Bounty Gate. Missing our pick. Drafting Christian Ponder. Nothing compares to the disappointment of '98. Not even close.

Not sure we would have won the SB that year as that Denver (I think) was real good. But if you don't get there you certainly can't win it. Biggest choke job in the history of sports. 09 was the year we would have won it hands down. That was a good team. But 5 turnovers were too much to overcome. What did AD fumble like 3 freaking times.

The Vikings were 15-1 in 1998 and had the greatest offense in the history of the league (at that point). Kicker Gary Anderson missed one field goal the entire season, and it came in the loss to the Falcons. The Vikings were nearly invincible in 1998. Easily the best team they have ever had.

The out of bounds runs bothered me greatly at the time bc it's just low IQ football play. But in reality the 2 of them only cost 10-15 secs each, so I don't know, hard to put it all on that ... Anderson for sure, no one would take a knee same situation in this day and age, Smith a little, Tim Dwight a lot of mo for the Falcons in that game.

The long and short of it is the 98 team choked in a big way. Esp Denny. They were so use to blowing teams out they got extremely tight when it got close. Cunningham had been regressing badly toward the end of the season.

I think Vikes would have had a really tough time with Terrell Davis. In addition, people forget John Randle was playing on one leg(hurt himself in garbage time against the Cardinals playoff game) and by the end of the Falcons game Vikes had ZERO healthy linebackers. Would have been fun to find out though. I always thought 2009 the Vikes were the best team in football... maybe 1a/1b with Saints. Had they made that superbowl I think they win.
