My Mount Rushmore of Vikings overrated/futility/choke/major-pieces:

1. Herschell Walker
2. Kirk Cousins
3. Brad Childress aka kickass offense
4. Adrian Peterson

Robert Smith is near the top of mine, STOP RUNNING OUT OF BOUNDS in NFC Title Game, and Vikings walk into Super Bow.

We were rolling that drive. Run plays were called to the outside where Smith either was pushed OOB or he cut it OOB after an easy 1st down.

You and Brad keep on this but its not a thing like you think.

Well Robert Smith disagrees. He said on national radio a couple years ago he screwed up.

It also doesn't almost 3 decades later. I will say it's a hell of a lot easier to fall down in bounds vs making a FG.

100%

Arguably the most overrated Viking of all time.

He was fast, but fragile. As fragile as he was it's hard to blame him to default to self preservation, but ya he needed to do better for the team.

like moss, smith had long legs - long strides...very deceptive speed for defenders...he couldn't juke himself out of a box, but he could run around the edge well enough....

when did he have is alcohol issues?...is that why he retired early?....

Smith wanted to become a Dr. He quit football at OSU one year because of the lack of letting him work on his degree (s).

That did get a lot of attention while he was playing. And this has nothing to do with you posting the bolded, just a me thing: I always find it amusing the number of young people I've known that say they want to be a doctor. I bet we all have a few of those in our lives, though.

I've never heard the "alcohol issues" thing before. I find that interesting - as always

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/31/2023 9:45:09 AM)

Smith also retired early because he needed another major knee surgery and he is a very smart guy; wanted to be able to walk w/o pain when older.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/31/2023 11:32:22 AM)

Always liked Smith. Like Barry Sanders, he never made a show when he scored. He was perfect for that OL... run through the massive holes and let his world-class speed take over.

Here's a nice juke at the 25 yard line:

I'd rather walk with pain, with a ring on my finger. With modern medicine, legs are fixable. You never get another chance to have a ring once you retire.

Smith was a me-first player. He always put himself before the team.

Announcers made up that nonsense about Smith being a smart guy as a result of a medical degree. He was soft, and didn't want to get hit.

The bottom line is, if Smith stays in bounds on back-to-back plays against the Falcons there was a good chance the Vikings win a Super Bowl. What happened after that can only be described as HE TOOK A FREAKING KNEE!

Two of the worst moments in Vikings history, and they both happened within a matter of minutes. For a Vikings fan, they were akin to a Bill Buckner moment.

As I've said many times, I could be on my death bed with no remaining cognitive skills, and I will always remember where I was when Dennis Green opted to take a knee. Aliso Viejo, CA, on my cousin's couch. My cousin and I both looked at each other with a blank stare on our face and said at the same time; "what the fuc& is he doing?"

We can rehash all of the bad moments and none of them will ever compare. The McClannahan fumble. The push off. Running the wrong way. The Darrin Nelson drop. Hershel Walker trade. Bounty Gate. Missing our pick. Drafting Christian Ponder. Nothing compares to the disappointment of '98. Not even close.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (4/1/2023 8:41:35 AM)

Not sure we would have won the SB that year as that Denver (I think) was real good. But if you don't get there you certainly can't win it. Biggest choke job in the history of sports.

09 was the year we would have won it hands down. That was a good team. But 5 turnovers were too much to overcome. What did AD fumble like 3 freaking times.

Both those games hurt a lot. The game that got me the most was the 41-0 beating we took from the giants. Just because we completely quit on the field.

Hyberbole anyone? I think Randle, Ed McDaniel and Smith were all diagnosed with injuries that would have kept them out of the SB.

Brad H -> RE: General Vikes Talk (4/1/2023 12:08:12 PM)

The Vikings were 15-1 in 1998 and had the greatest offense in the history of the league (at that point). Kicker Gary Anderson missed one field goal the entire season, and it came in the loss to the Falcons.

The Vikings were nearly invincible in 1998. Easily the best team they have ever had.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (4/1/2023 12:55:16 PM)

The out of bounds runs bothered me greatly at the time bc it's just low IQ football play. But in reality the 2 of them only cost 10-15 secs each, so I don't know, hard to put it all on that ...

Anderson for sure, no one would take a knee same situation in this day and age, Smith a little, Tim Dwight a lot of mo for the Falcons in that game.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (4/1/2023 1:17:06 PM)

The long and short of it is the 98 team choked in a big way. Esp Denny.

They were so use to blowing teams out they got extremely tight when it got close.

Cunningham had been regressing badly toward the end of the season.

Smith really did F'up badly by rob's. What an idiot. Actually it either saved Atl two TO's or by using the full 25 second clock twice would have shaved valuable time off the clock.

You sound like the narrator from "The 1998 Minnesota Vikings" VHS tape. They didn't get it done. And if they had they, I believe, would have been w/o at least three of their best players.

Easily the best team they ever had? Such unfounded blanket statements. One or two SB teams may disagree.

I've always had that same thought.

The only Vikes loss in 1998 was to the Bucs who ran the ball down the Vikes throat and kept Moss and company on the sidelines.
I think Vikes would have had a really tough time with Terrell Davis.
In addition, people forget John Randle was playing on one leg(hurt himself in garbage time against the Cardinals playoff game) and by the end of the Falcons game Vikes had ZERO healthy linebackers.
Would have been fun to find out though.

I always thought 2009 the Vikes were the best team in football... maybe 1a/1b with Saints.
Had they made that superbowl I think they win.

Exactly. We were decimated with injuries after the Falcons loss.

.
.
dated april 1st....

"O’Connell spoke to the media this week and provided a lengthy Cine update, “Lewis is in a great spot right now. He’s well ahead of his rehab process. I see him [every day]. It’s unique to see a player every single day this time of year at the facility, but that’s been Lew. Been in my office a bunch, asking, ‘Hey, when do we get started? Have you set the schedule for OTAs? What’s training camp going to be like?'”

“I said, ‘Just hold on, man. We’re going to be just fine.’ But he’s doing a great job; really excited about Lewis and his mental growth through how he handled adversity of that injury, stay connected with his teammates, and ultimately hopefully, this is just going to be a small bump in a great road to Lew becoming the player he’s going to become,” O’Connell added.

So, the major takeaway from O’Connell is one primary phrase — “well ahead of his rehab process.” If Cine’s recovery were waffling or unclear, O’Connell would’ve used more diplomatic words — he isn’t afraid to use those — geared at a wait-and-see approach. But that wasn’t the case."....vikingsterritory

Agree. That was a complete team. Actually we would have ran the Saints off the field had we not turned the ball over 5 times.
