The plays I liked best were the ones you didn't mention TJ, the ones that worked.

The TE screens had the element of surprise, and had Kirk made a more fluent throw, and the TEs acted a little more like Kelce, they may have gotten first downs on them.

Who knows, maybe KOC will scratch some of the plays that didn't work well. Wouldn't that be neat ?

I didn't mind them getting a little conservative, on the road against a team with inferior QBs, and it worked well, led to a victory.

I sense the creation of NEXT GEN ANALYSIS with that! But don't stop with comparisons of active players. The next time Thielen is tackled in the flat, we just have to remember that if he acted a little more like Moss it would have been a score. And defense too... if Patrick Peterson acted more like he was in 2010 he could be All-Pro.

Bottomline, should we fault KOC for not distinguishing players on his team from some of the league's best?

PS - I would rather have some ugly wins vs. "moral victory" losses.

What do people make of Cook's TD run as far as speed? I've been saying he hasn't lost his speed. Ironically, in that run I presume people think oh looks like he has the jets after all but IMO he had a great quick burst yet lacked his former top-end gear. Not saying he was ever a blazer, but it looked more like he held on while the defenders were tracking him down. IMO they would have caught him in another 10 yards or so. Maybe they are all fast.

.
I thought that cook, and the defenders, looked slow on that run. Could’ve been the heat. But it looked to me like they were all stuck in fourth gear.

A few points of comparison:

https://nextgenstats.nfl.com/stats/top-plays/fastest-ball-carriers/2022/REG/6

.

that's interesting that reagor had the fastest speed during that 25 yard punt return yesterday...to the eye, i didn't think he looked that fast either, but he burned several would-be tacklers - at the moment i watched it, i commented that he looked 'sneaky fast'...21.25 miles per hour....

during his 53-yard scamper, cook did indeed run 20.25 mph..

I'll add to this, Jefferson ran 20.07 mph during his 47-yard reception....

the vikings had three players on the list of the top-ten fastest players of the day - reagor, cook, and jefferson....

.

Yeah, once Reagor rounded the corner he looked a bit like Percy being shot out of a cannon on one of his returns. But because of the camera angle guess his top speed could have been earlier as he had more ground to crank it up.

Wonder if they could time Moss on his third TD against Dallas on Thanksgiving 98?

Yet here we are with ugly moral victories and a loss that had no redeeming qualities.

The Dolphins were blowing up the middle, so a TE screen is just another way of combatting that, and getting out the ball quickly.

Even if a play isn't successful, as Dan stated earlier, it can have the effect of making other plays effective. It can slow the pass rush, or a run up the gut can later set up play action. It also sets it up in future games.

Call plays that don't work, so that other plays look good by comparison. Sheer genius.

If the Dolphins sell out to take away the middle, the idea is to call a play to the outside that actually works.

I do know there were communication issues were Jefferson ran the wrong route on at least one play; it happened earlier in the year and was intercepted. Pretty sure that is what led to the KOC and Kirk conversation on the sideline.

There is plenty to clean up.

What I would do is have JJefferson or Irv in the backfield with Cook; swing pass on the opposite side of the bunch formation.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/17/2022 2:24:56 PM)

TJ

This may be a new idea to you, but sometimes unsuccessful plays still keep a defense off balance, and set up plays later.

I know you would like to see the Vikings put up 50 points at Miami, but the Vikings put up enough to win, while Buffalo only got 19 and lost there.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/17/2022 2:26:22 PM)

But it's obvious that TJ is a better OC than KOC, and should be given careful consideration for the HC job, or at least OC, in the off-season.

geoffrey greitzer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/17/2022 5:11:26 PM)

I believe the Vikings sit at 29th in the league on pass defense. 5-1 is great, but please address secondary playing 18 yards off the line of scrimmage.

Please. Buffalo plays a soft shell at times, but they also play man in certain situations. KOC, bye week, time to look into this

If only he hadn't squirted that ref.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/17/2022 6:58:18 PM)

I couldn't help myself and looked at the schedule.

Marty may be right.

Unless we are a total mirage you would hope we can get through this without losing more than four games. But I'm not betting a lot of money on it.

AZ
@ Wash
@ Buff
Dal
NE
NYJ
Det
Indy
NYG
@ GB
@ Chi

edit: a little better than avg. may get us 11 wins. id love to delete this but I better not ;)

Rob Viking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/17/2022 7:41:33 PM)

This team reminds me of last season's Bengals.

By all metrics they get dominated, but they get by with timely plays both on offense and defense, minimal mistakes and excellent special teams. They really don't lose the game and it worked out as the Dolphins slowly gave the game to them.

Cincy had all of those things come together late and almost parlayed it into a SB. Zac Taylor is a terrible coach IMO, I don't see thee Bengals being consistent contender until they find a new coach. I hope KOC isn't the same.

5-1, with 7-1 a real possibility.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/17/2022 9:07:37 PM)

I think Cincy is dealing with the black cloud that usually hangs over the team that lost the SB, but Taylor is a good coach, I wouldn't count them out just yet.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/17/2022 9:10:10 PM)

Ricky, I am confused by what you're saying.

I stated that the Vikings are likely to win a minimum of 11 games, most likely will win 12 or 13 for the season.

Are you saying you expect them to win 10 or fewer ? Or are you saying something else ?

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/17/2022 9:24:07 PM)

Well, im saying 12 should be possible looking at our schedule.

I'm also saying, in retrospect, i wish i wouldn't of looked. Id rather ride the wave instead of building up my hopes. That rarely works out for me

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/17/2022 11:21:20 PM)

It's one of the funnier seasons. In my manic ups during the off season being 5 -1 seemed like a no Brainer. Now that we're here I find it truly amazing.

But if we don't do that get better thing we've been talking about I fear the creep towards .500 happening.

They're in prove it to me territory.

xavier rhodes had a pick 6 several years back, where he was clocked at around 25mph....

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/18/2022 7:13:35 AM)

Because of how they're winning, I am guessing the Vikings aren't really thought of as SB contenders.

But if they come together as a team, and somehow pull an upset in Buffalo, I think that would make them thought of as SB contenders.

I don't see the Vikings winning all 3 of the next 3 games (Ari, at Wash, at Buffalo), and the weird part is I only see them winning at Buffalo, IF they lose at Washington the week before.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/18/2022 7:26:29 AM)

KOC had a brilliant gameplan against the Bears, giving Kirk mostly easy throws.

That same exact plan wasn't going to work on the road against a Miami team that looked at film, and decided the really clog up the middle. KOC adjusted, probably called off a lot of plays he had planned. Instead, he went conservative at times to keep the defense off balance, and still put Kirk in the position to have mostly easy throws, where there wasn't much of a chance for an INT.

I also liked the play designs where he got Jefferson wide open, and some of the plays that got Theilen wide open.

It was another great day of calling plays for KOC

Kirk Cousins just needs 2,274 passing yards & 3 more TDs to pass Culpepper in the next 11 games.(80 starts as a Viking) Also for fans who believe W/L just falls on the QB. Kirk 1 win away passing Culpepper in that stat as well.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/18/2022 8:40:06 AM)

Didn't realize Arizona was 2-4. Looking simply at the W/L results, losing to Seattle last week stands out. They've played KC, Rams (which isn't saying much so far but same division and all that), and Philly.

They don't seem to be doing anything great, but are no doormats either.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/18/2022 8:47:23 AM)

Arizona is getting Hopkins back from injury, and they acquired a WR, I think it was from the Panthers

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/18/2022 8:49:08 AM)

WR Robbie Anderson. Is he any good ? Might he look better with better QBing ?

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/18/2022 8:54:04 AM)

Arizona pass D is weak. Two picks on the year, few sacks. Still, no patsies.

I'm going to need a link for that.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/01/28/tyreek-hill-fastest-player-in-nfl/

"In the 2016 season, (Tyreek) Hill notched the fastest speed NGS has recorded for a ballcarrier when he hit 23.24 mph on a kickoff return. San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 1 this season, posted the second-best speed of 23.09 in 2020, and Hill also holds the third spot with a time of 22.77 mph in another 2016 game."
