It’s great that KAT is shooting a bunch of 3s and that the DR is winning. And it’s great that Ant is “the guy” for Team USA. But what Nickeil Alexander-Walker is doing in this tournament is, to me, and by far, the most encouraging Wolves-related development. He looks awesome.

Predicting NBA's Top 100 Players for 2023-24 Season

Jaden McDaniels — No. 97
Last year’s rank (N/A)

The Minnesota Timberwolves' 2022-23 campaign didn't go quite as planned after their blockbuster trade for Rudy Gobert last offseason, but Jaden McDaniels was one of the few bright spots.

The 22-year-old averaged a career-high 12.1 points per game on 51.7 percent shooting, and he ranked in the 91st percentile leaguewide in Dunks and Threes' defensive estimated plus/minus despite taking on some of the NBA's toughest defensive assignments.

McDaniels missed the playoffs last year after suffering a broken hand in Minnesota's regular-season finale, which prevented his coming-out party on a national stage. Regardless, the Wolves figure to sign him to an extension by the Oct. 23 deadline, as he projects to be a cornerstone alongside Anthony Edwards moving forward.

Rudy Gobert — No. 62
Last year’s rank: 20th

After ranking no lower than the 94th percentile in Dunks and Threes' estimated plus-minus from 2014-15 to 2021-22 (and no lower than the 98th percentile in defensive estimated plus-minus), Rudy Gobert finally took a step back in both metrics in 2022-23.

However, the 31-year-old is still 7'1", as good as any big at reading an offense and one of the game's most fearsome rim protectors.

Tune into any Minnesota Timberwolves game this season and you'll see a few opposing drivers enter the paint, see Gobert and do an abrupt U-turn back to the perimeter.

Karl-Anthony Towns — No. 23
Last Year’s rank: 16th

Karl-Anthony Towns entered the 2022-23 season widely considered a top-20 player, including 16th in B/R's rankings. His drop in this year's version is warranted.

Towns' effective field-goal percentage, points and rebounds per game significantly dropped as he was forced to adjust his game while playing next to Rudy Gobert. The 2015 No. 1 pick also had the worst net-rating swing of his career and he missed more than 50 games with a calf strain.

As a center, Towns' offense exploits only fall short of those of Nikola Jokić and Joel Embiid. But as a power forward, Towns' effectiveness is limited with Gobert clogging the paint.

Towns is still an elite talent capable of dominating any game, but he simply has one of the worst offensive setups among star players.

Anthony Edwards — No. 15
Last Year’s ranking: 26th

While Anthony Edwards’ jump in our final Top 100 rankings is notable, it’s fair to wonder if we’ve actually placed Edwards too low. That includes being outside the top five of guards.

Currently the best player on Team USA despite having just turned 22 years old, Edwards is the next great NBA shooting guard and should push Devin Booker for the title of league’s best already this season.

At ages 20 and 21, Edwards gained playoff experience with series of 25.2 points and 31.6 points, respectively, showing his ability to only get better when the lights get brighter. He turned in his best defensive season in 2022-23 as well and could become an All-Defensive team member in a few years.

Jaden McDaniels overrated nationally. I don't know if he's a Top 150 player!

I'm worried. After playing for Kerr, how is Ant going to handle coming back to this cluster f*** organization?

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Timberwolves 2022 - 2023 Season (9/4/2023 9:22:30 AM)

Simple math. 30 teams. A top 150 list would have an average of 5 players per team. In other words if you are just a functional starting quality NBA player you are a top 150 player.

McDaniels easily qualifies.

I think the Denver series goes very differently if he was available. But putting him at 97 is fair…at the moment. He has potential to go much higher but still has to sustain it to earn it.

David Levine -> RE: Timberwolves 2022 - 2023 Season (9/5/2023 1:23:38 PM)

Of all the noticeable, important changes Team USA made in its smashing of Italy, 100-63, in Manila, perhaps the most important was a conversation between the rest of the players and Anthony Edwards, the team’s leading scorer for this World Cup season.

Edwards followed up his 35-point game Sunday with three points on 1-of-6 shooting, but he added three assists and otherwise made sure the ball was moving so other players could touch it.

The difference, Mikal Bridges said, was enormous, and listening to him talk, Bridges made it sound like the change Edwards made in the Italy game enabled all the other positive changes that sprang out of such a lopsided win...

“Ant could get 30 whatever he wants, like easily,” said Bridges, who benefited the most from Edwards’ generosity to the tune of 24 points. “We talked to him and tried to help him out just to find guys, and that’s what he did. And he’s probably the happiest dude in the locker room right now....

“So, you know, shout out to Ant for that and he knows how dominant he is. … I think we kind of fed off that, you know, once we saw Ant doing that and how happy he was, and everybody kind of had that joy as well.”

Thanks for sharing David. Great to see Ant is more concerned with the team game than himself. He's growing as a player.

David Levine -> RE: Timberwolves 2022 - 2023 Season (9/8/2023 11:39:36 AM)

Ant with 8 defensive rebounds. The other 4 starters combined for 7.

Construction of this team needs to change for the Olympics. JJJ can not be your only center. Yes, he's a very good defender, but he rebounds like a wing.

Austin Reaves has been terrific for this team, but with Kerr switching everything on defense, Germany mercilessly hunted him and got whatever shot they wanted.

Probably the coaching staff and whoever makes up the Team USA committee.

I expect when the games actually mean something the roster will see an upgrade.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: Timberwolves 2022 - 2023 Season (9/8/2023 4:59:38 PM)

I thought Ant took too much time moving up the court on the last possession, then wasted more time lobbing the long pass to Reaves. Odds were slim, but if Reaves made the three they would have had a couple of seconds to foul and pray. Caveat: I didn't see the defense, etc on the dribble up the court, just focused on Ant kinda not moving very fast.

Bill Jandro -> RE: Timberwolves 2022 - 2023 Season (9/9/2023 11:02:33 AM)

Sounds like Kerr was more interested in NBA style BB than FIBA BB. The answer to the rebounding woes was sitting on the bench in Walker Kessler. Esp with no 3 second rule. JJJ was 9nth on the team in rebounding and is better next to a traditional big.

This is the dawning of the age of Vit Crejci.

Whatever that is.

wrh -> RE: Timberwolves 2022 - 2023 Season (9/15/2023 3:00:26 PM)

Nice to see Vando get a nice 4 yr/48M dollar contract (even if it is with the Lakers). Guy has earned it and then some. If the Vikings keep fumbling TWolves season can't arrive too soon.

kgdabom -> RE: Timberwolves 2022 - 2023 Season (9/24/2023 7:41:11 AM)

I just finished a fantasy auction draft. Yahoo thinks I slightly overpaid for KAT at 32, I got Rudy at $14 Jaden for $5 and Conley for $4. I feel best about Jaden for $5. $200 budget three more players of interest. Tatum $55, Harden $28 and Bane $25.
After the draft I have the entire league beating down my door trying to get Bane. I have offered him for Ant. Don't be shocked if the offer is accepted. TOs, Shooting percents and assists all favor Bane. I could have the entire Wolves starting 5.

Wolves dump WCCO and move to KFAN. Not sure how that will work with the Wild. Almost sounds like Wild get priority.

twinsfan -> RE: Timberwolves 2022 - 2023 Season (9/27/2023 11:39:57 PM)

Alvin Horton will continue to be the radio voice of the Wolves. PA will join him for 20 games as color announcer. Horton is not used to a multi-man booth. Hopefully he can adapt. PA is a big personality.

I'm looking forward to this 23-24 TWolves season. We going to have forum here? I have enjoyed following postings for many years here. Slowed down a lot last year and appears to be on the verge of being dead now. Hope people can/will get more active : )

Probably pretty limited. There are like 3 or 4 posters that care enough about the Wolves to post semi-regularly.

And there is Matt...

I am most excited to see if our 2nd unit is improved....I think Shake Milton, NAW, and Brown with Naz for a 2nd unit could be really good.

Heard Jim Pete had Prostate Cancer.....he should be back announcing games in November.
