When other teams design their defense to take him out of games, you have to take advantage by using the other talent on the offense, like Jones, Addison, Hockenson, Nailor, Oliver, etc etc etc.

Forcing things is what happens when you try too hard to get the ball into one guy's hands all the time.

They need to get it in Darnold's head that someone is going to be open because they are rolling too much coverage towards JJ...

He just needs to identify them quickly and deliver an accurate ball.

They do this and we will roll most teams.


o'connell has to design/call plays that work for darnold...throws he can make...throws darnold can make quickly...throws darnold can make while rolling out of the pocket...throws to places that are only occupied by one of our wr's....

as per judd zulgad, jacksonville had the 28th best defense against the pass....

If Darnold really hurt his hand trying to tackle after 3rd INT, you wouldn't know it. He was more accurate after that.

Maybe slam his hand in a door before game.[8|]


Jax has given up a ton to TE and RBs. KOC still wouldn't pound those two; had to force it to JJ and Addison at times. The CB that returned after being out 4 games was pretty tough plus they were trying to stop the medium to deep routes.

Looks a lot like DC's have figured out O'Connell's offense and his/Darnold's tendencies. JAX defense (ranked 28th) blitzed only ONCE in 42 drop backs. They came in to this game with 2 INT's all season and picked off Darnold 3 times. Even O'Connell's scripted plays bombed in this game. But clearly he isn't adjusting to what the defense is giving us he continues to force feed JJ and the med to deep routes.

They figured out they could blanket Jefferson wo having to pay for looser coverage elsewhere. Often times Sam doesn’t take his off of Jets the whole time and Sam’s going to him within a small window needing perfect throws.

We’re doing it to ourselves.

Exactly. Darnold needs to realize he doesn't have to force the ball to JJ.

He has other receiver options.

I wouldn't champion 4.9 yards per play... 4.9 ypp equates to 25th/26th in the league this year.

I'm not sure how you manage 82 plays / 400 yards with a "figured out" offense.
That strikes me far more as "piss poor red zone execution/careless with the ball".

If you wanted to argue defenses know how to defend Vikes in redzone... I'd agree with you... Vikes can't/don't pound the run inside the 10.

I think the first pick and maybe the 2nd were kind of on Jefferson. (The last one was pure Slingin' Sammy!). Half-assed efforts at positioning.

We all know Jets is relatively mellow as alpha WRs go, but he seems frustrated

KOC is finally starting to learn the importance of running the ball and time of possession.

But he might want to learn the importance of running well in short yardage, calling run plays when at the opponents 10 yards line, what plays to not call in certain situations, and maybe how to design better RUN plays.

KOC does seem good at designing pass plays.

They only punted twice. Three bad throws by Darnold were the difference between a blowout and a nail biter.

It was a little more than three bad throws...we stalled out four times and got FGs instead of TDs... and that was against one of the worst redzone defenses in the NFL

But Darnold throwing the ball away three times (well really five but one was dropped and the other reversed on a penalty) was a significant factor.

Moving the ball between the 20's is fine and dandy but when we enter the RZ (shorter field) we struggle.

Another noteworthy nugget: Vikings rank 31st in rushing TD's this season.

We also commit a ton of pre snap penalties which become highly magnified in the RZ.

So you might be right about defense's not figuring us out. Mostly self-inflicted wounds in RZ that by both Darnold and O'Connell that need to be cleaned up.

I am getting older so my memory isn't as great as it used to be, but, just how many pre snap penalties did we have in the redzone yesterday?
