After sleeping on it, this win was more comfy than I what I went to sleep on. I know we can always play the 'what if' game but....

If Nailor catches that bomb, this game is probably a blowout. We also had a very big botch on D that gave them life. I also ack that the refs handed us some sizeable favors but all in all, we should beat them about 30-10/14-ish. On the road that's a nice win.

I also like that KOC seemed to reign in the playcalling a bit after a bad Darnold game. He didn't try and fancy razzle-dazzle stuff.

Our run game is weak and disjointed. Jones disappoints more than he flashes.

It would help if someone between the tackles was capable of opening a hole.

I also think that Jones is banged up. Not 'hurt' but he's clearly not 100% which, given his age and usage, it to be expected. It's also 1 reason why I was floored and mentioned it on the GD thread.

You're up by double digits with 22 seconds to go. Dude has had a pretty bad game and is clearly banged up a bit. Why on earth are you handing it off to him? That made zero sense.

No. We shouldn’t always ‘what if’.

Especially when the what iffing only benefits one side. Thats just fan-tasy.

Like 2022 … this team is not even close to being as good as its record.

Does that matter? Not for a true fan of the team that cares more about winning games than the quality of the football.

I’m no longer a true fan.

Not to mention the play was likely to be unsuccessful given his paltry 2.6 ypc average (he lost a yard).

They ran him 3 straight plays, netting 6 yards. Our designated try-to-run-out-the-clock guy.

So you went to sleep a bit uneasy based on the actual game but woke up having created a new score based on some plays you dreamt about?

I was kind of shocked that after the first miserable fail on a QB sneak, we did really well on the next 2 (or was it 3?). I swear Bradbury actually won his battles and gave Sam a lane to get the 1st each time.

The mediocrity of the league is alive and well.

There are three teams that have been consistently legit, and Philly is coming on.

There are 9 teams in the 2-3 win bottom feeder category. We've played 4 of them.

And fully half of the teams are in the 4-7 win range where just a couple of games could mean the difference between first or last place on the division.

With 44% of the league making the playoffs, various teams are included by default to bolster the league's bottom line.

NFL.com literally classifies Jacksonville and the Giants as "On The Bubble" for the playoffs.

LOL

Technically they aren't eliminated yet, but there is no scenario that I can see where either makes the playoffs. They are both terrible teams right now. Both are likely to have new coaching staffs next year.

Both are likely to offload some talent in the offseason to start rebuilding.

Laughable that NFL.com would even consider such a position on either team.

Yep. We need a strong center and two inline guards that can generate movement along the line. We somehow haven't figured this out for the past few years. I hope we have enough salary cap money to fix this issue next season.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/19/2024 6:55:04 AM)

Would it be fair to say that a lot of us are not with this team in a way one might or should be with an 8–2 team?

Most call the record a surprise. That should lead to a bunch of really happy fans.

Wins on the road---sign me up. We were a Nailor catch from winning 30-13 and the defense is the best against the run and rushing TDs allowed in the NFL. The one game that we got torched by Gibbs and defense didn't seem right (Lions/Rams) were when the playcaller and glue guy (Cashman) was out.

The IDL isn't sexy but Bullard, Tillery, and Phillips have done a good job.

So unless the team miraculously goes injury free, you'll always have a built-in excuse for why the team lost. At least that's what history shows.

The team did great getting through the early part of the schedule. They are at least winning during cupcake month. IMO they don't play like an 8-2 team but have done a lot better that expected. Maybe it's 'what have you done for me lately', which is 3-2 with a narrow win over Jacksonville who currently holds the #1 spot in the draft.

Much more legit that the 2022 team though.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/19/2024 9:54:46 AM)

Yeap, I had pretty low expectations coming in. Figured Darnold would start and at some point it would get turned over to JJM. That injury was a bummer but really, I figured:

about 6-7 wins max
get a pretty good feeling about what JJM could be next year
improved but not great D

Then head off in to the offseason with a great cap situation to really start to make a run (assuming JJM isn't a flop). So i'm keeping my arms at length at this season. It's been fun but, like Bill mentioned, this really isn't a true 8-2 team. Too many dumb TO's, mistakes and blah play calling, at times.

We are 8-2. it is a true 8-2 team. If we were any other record, we wouldn't be a true 8-2 team.

Please. Just because we aren't dominating in every win doesn't mean we aren't legitimate. Just like the Chiefs who managed to get to 9-1 via never giving up and a lot of help from the refs...Their record is what it is. Let's not downplay our success.

More to how important Cashman is than anything else and how we play against the Lions with Cashman next time. Pretty tight game w/o him. Detroit so far is a top 3 team in the league.

Were we a true 13-4 team before we went and lost to the Giants?

Our defense wasn't near as good as it is now. Offense was legit. I would say the schedule gave us 2-3 wins and we won a ton of close games; probably more of a .500 team.

BisonFan -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/19/2024 2:54:50 PM)

I was prepared for a long season with more losses than wins and here we are 8-2. Mentally I have to admit, I am ready to be let down but hopefully not until the playoffs. Let's enjoy the ride, better than being a Cowboy fan right now! Still mad about the Drew Pearson call. [X(]

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/19/2024 4:10:00 PM)

According to Darren Wolfson, he believes there is “some level on concern” internally about #Vikings QB JJ McCarthy’s recent knee procedure.

Wolfson said he is not ready to hit the panic button, but the fact that the recent injection was not anticipated, this was “absolutely a setback.”

*********

Good thing he took the better route.

Is Cashman as important to us as Hutchinson is to the Lions?

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/19/2024 9:10:43 PM)

While DT Dexter Lawrence is a great player, I wonder if I may have overvalued what he could be for the Vikings, because he looked above his normal play facing Ed Ingram in week one, as opposed to even a mediocre pass blocking guard.

Apparently.

Cashman is no where near the player of Hutchinson.

But the lions have figured out other ways to generate pressure.

This Vikes defense seems to struggle mightily when Cashman is out.
Pace was out and they didn't miss a beat.
I think they could replace a pass rusher without a huge dropoff.

But Cashman or Gilmore... I think the defense kind of falls apart if those guys aren't available.
No one currently adequately replaces them.
