So we're keeping 64 players then?

Trekgeekscott -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/27/2024 3:04:50 PM)

Yes, I know they've supplied the league with an actual 53 man roster and I'm sure we will all hear about it shortly.

Just being impatient for some reason today.

In the first two weeks of the preseason 78% of the kickoffs were returned, 11 of those kickoffs were taken back past the 40 yard line, which is almost double the amount in last preseason. The average starting point for a drive following a kick return was the 28.3 yard line as opposed to the 23.9 yard line last year. While there wasn’t a kickoff returned for a touchdown in the preseason, 65% of the returns have gone past the 30 yard line, while only 11.7% went past the 30 last year.

It seems like its become more of a punt return skill than a kick off return one.

The #Vikings are keeping undrafted DT Taki Taimani on the initial 53, per source.

The #Vikings are keeping CB Dwight McGlothern on the initial 53, per source.

Waiver Claims

Now that all of the NFL teams have set their final rosters, teams are going to be coming through those cuts to see if there’s anyone they’re interested in. If a team wants to claim a player with less than four years of accrued NFL service, they will have to put in a waiver claim for them and hope that the player falls to them. Any player with more than four seasons of service that gets released is a free agent and can immediately sign with another team without having to go through the waiver process.

The waiver priority list is based on last season’s draft order, and remains so through the end of the third week of the regular season. That means that, as things stand right now, the Vikings are at #11 on the waiver priority list. A team can claim as many players as they want, but if a team above them on the waiver priority list puts in a claim on the same player, the team with the higher priority wins. So, if any of the 10 teams above the Vikings put in a claim on a player the Vikings want, that player isn’t coming to Minnesota.

The Carolina Panthers, who are at #1 on the list, can claim any player they want and as many players as they want. Once we get through the first three weeks of the regular season, the waiver order goes back to win-loss records and various tiebreakers based on the current season.

If a team is awarded a player on waivers, they then have to make a corresponding move to add that player to the 53-man roster, such as waiving or releasing another player.

The deadline for these claims is 11:00 AM Central time on Wednesday morning. After that, we move to the second phase [Practice Squad].

I was hoping they would make it! But I'm surprised that Gaskin got bumped. He looked like a decent player.

He didn't do enough to show he belonged. Not for a first round pick, at least.

Lewis Cine, it appears, did NOT make the team

Nashon Wright, who we traded Booth for, did NOT make the team

Robert Tonyan did NOT make the team

N'keal Harry, did NOT make the team.

Brian Asomoah is still a Viking.

They kept 6 WRs right now. JJ, Addison, Trishton Jackson, Nailer, Powell and Sherfield.

Not a lot of surprises otherwise. Except the two guys listed by others above. and good for them too.

So I guess that throws a wrench in the idea of trading Bynum so we can start Cine...

Yeah thanks for putting the fear of Cine in the conversation.

It helped pass the time.

I kind of liked Gaskin too. Perhaps he makes it to the practice squad. If not him, it's clear that they will be adding another running back.

Kyle Hamilton was right there...

Take a stud S vs dance with your mortal enemies, run in the opposite direction, hook-up with what's left at the end of the round.

Tough one.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/27/2024 3:56:10 PM)

I'm happy Drake Rodriguez and Taimini made the team ... really ...

but going back to the start of the offseason ...

I was really worried about our DL.

Glad we put our backs into it by adding Tillery, a 7th rd pick (LDR), an UFA (TT) and a UFL dude (Redmond).

The silver lining is Hamilton will soon command a huge $$ contract, and apparently Kwesi is adverse to giving such money to a safety. Now if he can only trade Bynum then claim Cine off waivers...

Can't argue they didn't leave any stone unturned on their way to the cheapest ($ and resources) DL ever assembled.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/27/2024 4:01:51 PM)

Well its pretty obvious what's going on here.

I'm not going to bitch about one #1 and two #5s in 2025. [don't hold me to it]

We have obviously spent some time self-evaluating and decided we are much better at UDFAs than drafting prospects.

Kwesi is diabolically clever, I guess.

There is always a chance nobody claims him and we can put him on the practice squad.

Hopefully these guys contribute more than the ever popular stone unturned Luiji Vilain.
