Then again, there is usually a black cloud (the following season) hanging over the team that lost the Super Bowl.

The last time the 49ers lost the Super Bowl to KC, SF went 6-10 the following season.

Sounds like as clean of a performance as we could have hoped for off the launch pad.

I know this isn't your point but since you only had the box score and play by play we sucked off the launch pad [:-] Our first series was as bad as it could get. It was impressive they didn't let it sink them given what happened last year

run stuff for no gain
sack
fumble
[:o]

And then the defense came on the field for the second time and on a very short field, held them to just a FG.

Bad situation mitigated exceptionally well. We never looked back from there.

Yeap, the D was outstanding all day. It'll be a whole different challenge on Sunday though. SF is such a unique thing to deal with. I feel they may run it right down our throats all day long.

They expect to I'm sure. We'll see.

Our run defense is more whirling dervish than brute force so Flores will have to scheme up a storm.

Mason looked pretty dam good, not sure we'll see as much Deebo in the backfield (as the Jets got) unfortunately.

Deebo with Aiyuk Jennings and Kittle are tough duty for our secondary.

I think time of possession will be everything for us.

They did NOT look like a team with a black cloud last night.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Nothing about this moment said, Let it rip. But there was Sam Darnold, the Minnesota Vikings’ starting quarterback, eyeing the left side of the field. And there was superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson, peeling off a corner route toward the sideline.

Until this second-and-12 situation early in the second quarter, Darnold had played smartly. A checkdown to the flat here, a quick strike up the seam there. Eventually, the Vikings were going to ask him to launch one, to trust Jefferson and to trust himself. That time was now.

Darnold feathered a pass perfectly in Jefferson’s direction, and as the ball dropped into Jefferson’s hands for a 44-yard gain, you almost felt like the only thing that would have done the pass justice was one of the shot tracers they use on TV to follow shots on the PGA Tour.

Darnold jogged up to take the next snap as Jefferson lined up out wide. Coach Kevin O’Connell scanned his play sheet for the next call. It was arguably the most significant throw in the Vikings’ 28-6 shellacking Sunday of the New York Giants, and all of the major Vikings characters were focused on capping the drive with a touchdown. Which they did.

After the game, Jefferson described Darnold’s pass as “beautiful.” O’Connell called it “remarkable.” When asked why it impressed him so much, the head coach stressed the importance of being able to lean on his quarterback in a vital moment.

And, frankly, isn’t that the central question surrounding the Vikings this season? Can Darnold lift the offense when he’s called upon? The Giants did not present the toughest test Sunday, but all you can do is handle the task in front of you, and Darnold did. He completed 19 of 24 passes for 208 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

“Baller,” veteran safety Harrison Smith said of his quarterback. “I love Sam, man. I mean, he started 12-for-12. What the f— else could you want?”

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/10/2024 3:10:41 PM)

“We put a lot of pressure and anxiety on the coordinators’ and quarterback’s minds,” Van Ginkel said.

The pressure is sometimes an illusion, but the anxiety is not, and that was the case Sunday. The Vikings leaned on a four-man pass rush on 75.5 percent of their defensive snaps, according to TruMedia. Last year, they deployed a four-man pass rush only 29.9 percent of the time. Despite mostly rushing with four, Minnesota’s pressure affected Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, hitting him 11 times and forcing him into two interceptions.

I'm not going to say "you have to credit to KAM" because I'm willing to bet KOC and BFlo had a lot of input. So instead I'll say "you have to credit to them" for the off season moves.

Van Ginkel - pick 6
Turner - a sack
Grenard - put on good pressure
Darnold - a really good day
Jones - almost 100 yards
Reichard - didn't miss a kick

So nice not to have the annoyance of a blown PAT.

After finally getting caught up on the week, a few takes…

Watch out for Tampa Bay.

I have 0 complaints on how Darnold played but his arm strength wasn’t on display. As much as the GDT might have you believe. It wasn’t needed. Most of his throws had a flick to them.

Daniel’s is going to be pummeled onto IR.

Penix in week 4 cementing the worst FA signing ever.

We can beat the 9rs. (literally my take regardless lol)

Complaining about that long long before QB, IOL etc. Hope its the real deal.

Tampa will make the playoffs but I would worry about them. Baker is the perfect QB for them though. Easy division.

Darnold's problem has never been the problem. It was that he was blamed for too many TO's but that isn't/wasn't fair, IMO. He played with crap talent and crap coaches/franchises

Agree about Daniels. Dude is RG3 all over again. Sad. He was my guy in the draft. I'm fully onboard with JJM now but wanted JD's.

The KC's/Penix situation is the worst/weirdest decisions an org has done since the Browns signing Watson to that huge contract.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/10/2024 5:16:32 PM)

Good point.

Browns/Watson is hard to worst.

If you can best something you can worst it. Look it up, it’s good.

True, hopefully the Vikings can unveil what might be the black cloud hanging over the team that lost the Super Bowl.

The last SF team coming off a Super Bowl loss, were 1-7 at home, 5-3 on the road.

I like it.

He's above average at his job, its an under market contract and he'll be under 30 for the whole deal.

Ben Goessling@BenGoessling

#Vikings injury report for Wednesday:

DNP: Jordan Addison (ankle), Andrew Van Ginkel (foot)
Limited: Garrett Bradbury (knee)
Full: Jalen Nailor (ankle)

The Vikings took Andrew Van Ginkel out of the game for precautionary reasons on Sunday, and Kevin O’Connell said that was because of the foot injury he had this offseason. Would think this is an extension of the strategy to preserve him, but we’ll see more tomorrow.

Above average isn't what I'm interested in for that position. I feel that the team needs a stud in the middle of the line. It's nice that he's under 30, but he's just a guy in my opinion so I wouldn't have done the extension. But, I understand why some are okay with it, I just don't like settling for average.

This doesn't stop that from happening. Phillips best position might be DE in a 3-4. Or UT in a 4-3. Either way, you can absolutely put a huge NT next to him.

He gives us multiple options at a very reasonable AAV.

As of today, he is 3 yrs/$24M with an out in 2026 consisting of $1.7 dead and $7.5 cap savings. https://overthecap.com/player/harrison-phillips/6981

Whether he is above average, the Flores' Vegas tricks with snaps and positions make that difficult. So make what you will with production vs. his $8M AAV cap.

I'd like to see a top NT, no doubt. But I'd be cool next offseason with a top CB draftee, a top CB FA, and the Edge players we have. Rome wasn't built in a day, so get some legit heavies after that. In the meantime, Phillips can provide value as a starter, or later as a platoon guy.

Was going to mention his value may be what you describe... DE or UT. There is versatility there.

In a way he was part of a ugh DL, and in a way after last Sunday I could see the coaches saying yes let's extend him now.

Great point about putting a real NT next to him.

Of course I thought the same last year and it was a great game

looking forward to this one
