I've been saying for years that I can't remember the last time the Vikings drafted a great quarterback. It's actually a pretty tough question to answer. Was Culpepper great? I would say no, but some would say yes. My vote goes to Kramer.

I know nobody thinks Bridgewater was a great quarterback, but I put him in there as a reference point. He was as close as it gets going back to the 20th century.

There has been a lot more misses than hits, that's for sure.

It depends on your definition of great. I believe Fran Tarkenton was great. He won a league MVP. Culpepper was potentially great, but IMO he never got there.

Culpepper wasn't great and neither was Kramer IMO. Tarkenton is still the only great QB this team ever drafted.

Cunningham was great for one season. [:D]

Agreed 100%.

The biggest part of that is we almost never draft QBs.

Over the sixty-three previous drafts in Vikings’ franchise history, the Vikings have drafted a total of 27 quarterbacks. Most of those were in the later rounds. Only five were selected in the first thirty-two picks (Fran Tarkenton was picked 29th but also in the 3rd round back in 1961). So using a first-round draft pick on a quarterback is something the Vikings have rarely done in franchise history- only four times in sixty-three drafts.

The highest the Vikings have ever drafted a quarterback was at #11 in 1999 when they drafted Daunte Culpepper. As it stands now, the Vikings may at least tie that record next month if they stick and pick with their #11 pick. But with the trade for an additional first-round draft pick, they may move up in the draft and select a quarterback with the highest draft pick in franchise history.

Tommy Kramer was Brett Favre before Brett Favre came along

But he got hurt more and drank alot.

Kramer could have been great, but I think he drank it away.

Fran is the only great QB on the list.

At 49 years old I'm still too young to have any memory of Fran Tarkenton playing football. Sad to say, that's why I picked Daunte. Shame on me.

The funny thing is, if you look at his passing numbers they were pretty mediocre. As a kid, I always thought Fran was the man and he could do no wrong. He threw 266 interceptions, including 32 in his final season.

IMO, if the Vikings draft McCarthy we will be seeing this thread again in three years.

Your “ stats are skewed by the NFL rule changes that protected passers, receivers, and generally favored the offensive passing game..

Pro football hall of fame:

At the time of his retirement, Fran owned every significant passing record – 3,686 pass completions, 47,003 passing yards, and 342 touchdowns. But particularly in his early years, Tarkenton attracted widespread attention as an exciting scrambler who took plays from sideline to sideline. Add his 3,674 yards rushing to his stunning passing totals and you have 50,677 yards – almost 29 miles or 500 football fields – of offensive progression. Yet Tarkenton was also a "quality" passer, as his 80.4 passing rating that placed him in the upper echelon in that category demonstrates.

Just because the game had changed, doesn’t make Tark’s performance any less impressive in the context of the NFL he played in.

Mediocre is reserved for KFC.

I was looking mostly at his TD-to-INT ratio, which was very mediocre. 266 picks is a lot, especially when you consider they didn't throw the ball that much back then. Brady threw 212 in 335 games. Tark threw 266 in 246 games.

Interceptions were way more common in the 60's and 70's. Johnny Unitas had 253 in 211 games.

If you look at other HOF guys from his era, Tark's INT numbers were a little high. Staubach threw 109 in 131 games. Dawson had 183 in 211 games. Starr had 138 in 196 games.

I'm convinced that Bradshaw, Plunkett and Namath made the Hall of Fame based on winning a Super Bowl. Bradshaw had a terrible start to his career and threw 212 TD's and 210 INT's (in 168 games). Plunkett also had a terrible TD-to-INT ratio (164-198). Namath would never make the HOF in today's game. His TD-to-INT ratio was brutal (173-220 in 140 games).

Then again, back then defenders were allowed to defend.

Even into the 80s and 90s INTs were way higher than now.

Elway had 300 TDs and 226 INTs in 234 games.

Marino had 420 TDs and 252 INTs in 242 games.

Favre had 508(!) TDs, but also 336 INTs in 302 games.

Favre held almost every QB record good and bad because he threw more passes than every other QB.
