I never heard why Brodin wasn't playing. Did they say?

Wasn't exactly a textbook kind of game, but nice to come away with the two points.

stfrank -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2024 Season (11/15/2024 7:29:41 AM)

The word on Brodin is an upper body injury and he's day to day. Now with Zuc and Ek out the line up should be interesting against Dallas Saturday. Dallas has had this groups number as of late....

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2024 Season (11/16/2024 8:54:00 PM)

MN vs Dallas "if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all"

[:@]

Man, I know they are good and hard to break down but damn. Middelton puts one off the post early in 2nd and late we have another grade A chance and Faber's stick snaps as he gets a shot off [X(]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2024 Season (11/20/2024 11:16:25 AM)

Another nice win last night on the road. Gus was great again and having 25 and 14 back makes a huge difference.

Did you see the goal? OMG!

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2024 Season (11/21/2024 8:51:23 PM)

We dominated that period but it's only 1-1 after Floppy completely whiffs on one and 1 is taken away for a coaches challenge for offsides (we never got a real good look but it was clearly close). That said, total domination. Sucks to be tied.

It was so bad that Martin and Clymer mentioned a "bad bounce" but they didn't even show it. Just moved on.....

The Foligno 'non goal' was close by the replays they showed real time. During the intermission they had more angles and it was close, but he was off.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2024 Season (11/21/2024 9:12:13 PM)

Can't take that one away from Moose. 2-1 GG's.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2024 Season (11/21/2024 9:20:28 PM)

2-2. it seems like whoever has the puck in the other teams zone, they are bound to score. This may be a bad, high scoring game. They aren't even amazing offensive plays. Just bad D all around.

Holy cow. This Wild season is mirroring the Vikings for me. Didn't expect anything this year. "Next year is the open window with salary cap relief". And both are playing really well and exceeding all expectations by a mile.

Okay, I watched a video of that first goal and had to chuckle. I will say I haven't seen that since the last mites game I watched, LOL.

These games with Floppy playing always make me nervous....
So far so good with a 3-2 lead into the 3rd period, but there are 14 minutes left.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2024 Season (11/29/2024 3:30:48 PM)

Yeap. We outlasted them but one of the worst reff'ing decisions you will ever see made that last minute more nerve racking than it should have been.

That something I have never seen before. Oh we f'd up and shouldn't have called icing, but the goal you scored by winning the race to the puck doesn't count just because...[sm=shrug.gif]

Minnesota Wild acquires defenseman David Jiricek from Columbus

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota Wild President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Bill Guerin today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired defenseman David Jiricek (YIHR-ih-chuhk) and a fifth-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for defenseman Daemon Hunt, a first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft (Top Five Protected), a third-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft (previously acquired from Colorado), a fourth-round selection in the 2026 NHL Entry (previously acquired from Toronto) and second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. If Minnesota’s first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft is one of the first five selections, the Wild will retain the pick and transfer its 2026 first-round selection to the Blue Jackets. Jiricek will report to the Iowa Wild in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Jiricek, 21 (11/28/03), has collected one assist in six games with Columbus and three points (2-1=3) in four games with the Cleveland Monsters (AHL) this season. The 6-foot-4, 204-pound native of Klatovy, Czech Republic recorded 10 points (1-9=10) and 22 penalty minutes (PIM) in 43 games with the Blue Jackets in 2023-24. He ranked T-9th among NHL rookie defensemen in assists and T-11th in scoring. Jiricek also tallied 19 points (7-12=19) in 29 contests with Cleveland and added 11 points (3-8=11) in 14 Calder Cup Playoff in 2023-24. He ranked third among AHL blueliners in scoring and T-4th in assists during the Calder Cup Playoffs.

The right-shot defenseman made his NHL debut on Oct. 28, 2022, against the Boston Bruins and tallied his first career NHL goal on Oct. 14, 2023, against the New York Rangers (Igor Shesterkin). He notched 11 points (1-10=11) and 28 PIM in 53 career NHL games with Columbus (2022-24). Jiricek notched 60 points (15-45=60) including six power-play goals (PPG), 168 shots on goal and 59 PIM in 88 career AHL games with Cleveland (2022-24).

He represented Czechia at the 2021, 2022 (silver medal) and 2023 IIHF World Junior Championships and the 2022 IIHF World Championship (bronze medal). Jiricek was named the top defenseman at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship and was named to the tournament All-Star Team. He was selected by Columbus in the first-round (sixth overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft.

Hunt, 21 (5/15/22), was selected by Minnesota in the third-round (65th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft. He collected one assist in 13 games in parts of two seasons with the Wild (2023-24) and recorded 45 points (6-39=45) and 48 PIM in 125 games in parts of four AHL seasons (2020-24) with Iowa.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2024 Season (11/30/2024 8:19:39 PM)

Missed the first. Got home for the start of the 2nd. They scored on the PP and we got even on one too. KK is amazing. He just redirected a tip in goal with, literally, one hand on his stick.

Got any insights on him? I've got nothing but giving up a first seems like he must be somewhat legit.

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Wild 2024 Season (11/30/2024 9:02:43 PM)

Jiricek was the #6 overall pick in the 2022 draft. He is supposedly 6'4" and 210 lbs and is from Czechia. He has been a good offensive player through the AHL with a cannon slap shot and strong wrister. The things I read make it sound like he was frustrated with the Columbus organization and wanted out. Evason still likes those steady ham and eggers over talent.

Grabbed this from his scouting profile.

Offensively, he’s extremely skilled when it comes to patrolling the blue line, be it at even strength or on the power play. He’s one of the most explosive skaters among defensemen, and while his acceleration needs some work, he’s a hard player to slow down when you factor in his size. His edgework is very good and he also possesses what I believe might be one of the best shots among defensemen in the 2022 draft class. Whether it’s a booming one-timer or a deceptive wrist shot, Jiricek’s point shots typically end up in the back of the net before you can blink.

Defensively, he has elite gap control when it comes to boxing out incoming opponents. He’s incredibly hard to shake off when he’s chasing the puck carrier, and he uses his frame to his advantage. While he’s not a Scott Stevens clone on the back end, he’s certainly not known to shy away from laying a big hit every now and then. Watching him play, I see similarities between Jiricek and Detroit Red Wings star rookie Moritz Seider. Both are right-handed defensemen at roughly the same height and weight, and both can impact the game in just about any aspect

David Jiricek – Draft Projection
To me, the clear-cut top two defensemen in this draft class are Jiricek and Slovakian blueliner Simon Nemec. I don’t think you can go wrong with either, but Nemec likely has the edge, and with the amount of talented forwards at the top end of this draft class, it’s probably a safe bet to say Jiricek goes in the top-10. However, if a team likes what they see enough, it wouldn’t shock me to see him sneak into the top-5.

Quotables
“Mobile defender with good size and a bomb of a shot from the point. Plays a physical brand of hockey and has the potential to contribute in a variety of ways as an NHL defenseman.” -Nick Richard, Dobber Prospects

“Jiříček has good puck tracking ability. He does an excellent job scanning the ice and moving his body around the offensive zone at the same pace as his opponents’ puck movement. The Czech defender reacts quickly to puck movement, if he spots a loose puck coming up the boards towards him, he shifts his hips and knees in a pivot to trap possession of the puck.” -Josh Tessler, Smaht Scouting

“Jiricek is an exceptional two-way defender that shows a strong transition ability. He reads the play so well, playing like a veteran defender well above his age. He regularly shows very impressive reads, noting where players are and correctly attacking or hanging back as needed.” -Josh Bell, FC Hockey

Strengths
Strong two-way game
Physicality
Shooting
Skating and edgework
Gap control

Under Construction – Improvements to Make
Decision making
Accelaration

NHL Potential
Make no mistake, Jiricek has all the tools to become an effective, top-pairing defenseman in the NHL someday. Whether or not he can put those tools to work in North America remains yet to be seen, but assuming he can, he’s got all the skills to carve out a long NHL career.
