David Levine -> RE: 2025 Vikings Free Agency (3/18/2025 12:08:57 PM)

The 26-year old Okudah is a former first-round pick of the Detroit Lions in 2020. He started six games while playing in only nine total due to injuries. He recorded 47 tackles, two pass breakups, and one interception as a rookie. After another injury limited him to one game in 2021, Okudah bounced back with 15 starts for the Lions during the 2022 season. He ended that campaign with a career-high 73 tackles, one interception returned for a touchdown, and seven PDs.

Prior to joining the Texans last season, Okudah spent one season with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. He started nine games while playing in 13 total, the second most he’s played in since being drafted. He ended that year with 44 tackles and three pass breakups.

Okudah has been a strong run defender and tackler in his NFL career, he's just had a tough time in coverage, where he's allowed a 66.3 completion percentage and 106.3 passer rating on targets to his assignment

We signed a G and a C.

The only weak link left is LG which at the moment has Brandel at the top of the depth chart. But what I'm hearing is they are really kind of excited about Walter Rouse taking over there soon.

So I doubt there will be any further action on the OL for now.

Just like they were excited about Brandel last year? Or Ingram the year before? Or Cleveland before that? They really should sign someone.

David Levine -> RE: 2025 Vikings Free Agency (3/18/2025 12:11:53 PM)

There is a reason he went #3 overall. He just hasn't panned out at all.

quote:

"Height, weight, length and speed are top-shelf. Size to guard bigs and speed to check deep threats. Patient from press and rarely tilted by a shifty release. Crowds opponent tight to the boundary on outside release. Rare, rapid-fire foot quickness and turnover. Maintains feel and eliminates safe space on vertical routes. Keys receiver's eyes to find the ball with his back to the QB. Sharp swipes through the hands tilt 50/50 passes in his favor. Cheat-code explosiveness in burst to close. Breaks under ball-side hip to harass passing windows. Recovery speed and length to take more chances as a pro. Rangy from boundary to hash in Cover-3 shuffle. Chooses wisely when to strike and when to tackle. Willing to unload on running backs who test him."

Hopefully Flores sees something that he thinks he can fix.

I’d feel so much better if we could just get Flacco signed. A lot of pieces have come together. Need the QB and then to hit on G and CB on the draft and we are golden.

This is nothing like any year I remember....when have they ever been this aggressive in FA? You are too stuck on 1 player. The last OG spot is supposed to be the easiest spot to fix after they have Tackle, Center, and RG addressed.

One of the most impressive FA periods ever in Vikes history. Top 5 C, Top 5 RG, 2 top DT, a bruising RB, 2 younger CBs with some promise, and a younger Swing Tackle with starting experience.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: 2025 Vikings Free Agency (3/18/2025 2:09:35 PM)

Looks like their CB strategy is to throw a bunch of bodies at the position and let them battle it out. ST experience will help tilt decisions.

Use a 5th to move up slightly in the 1st and take a CB. Use the other 5th to move up in the 3rd and take a G. Combine all the 6th and 7th rounders for a big project WR. Then get going on the UDFAs.

Hope they fill it also....just stating that if that is the only hole left after everything.....very impressive FA week/2 weeks.

Read a take where they go after a third Indy lineman (Quentin Nelson).

Yeap. A lot of speculation that there is one more big move coming. The thought is "when" they cut Bradbury. If they designated him a June 1st cut his hit is spread out. They did it where it hurts a bit next year but frees up more space for now. They had plenty of room for some other moves so that's fueling the "it's big" talk.

The #Vikings have rejected multiple trade calls on J.J. McCarthy, telling other teams they’re moving forward with him as their quarterback, sources say.

The team plans to add a veteran. But they’re not pursuing Aaron Rodgers at this time. McCarthy now enters the offseason as QB1.

Teven Jenkins is still out there. Played exclusively at LG last year. Mid 70s PFF grades for run and pass.

Questions are: Why would Bears not want to keep him when they needed OLine help? Injury prone, probably wants too much $$$. He did give up pretty high number of QB hits per snaps played.

The longer they wait on these guys the cheaper they get......Rondale Moore isn't all the way healthy yet so you aren't getting 4 million a year at this point.

Rondale Moore now signed also.

David Levine -> RE: 2025 Vikings Free Agency (3/19/2025 6:58:21 PM)

As a freshman at Purdue in 2018, [Moore] had one of the great freshman seasons in recent memory, being named a Consensus All-American while also winning the Paul Hornung Award (most versatile college football player) and the Paul Warfield Trophy (best wide receiver) as well as garnering Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Receiver of the Year honors. He then went on to play just four games in 2019 because of a hamstring issue and only played three games in the COVID-marred 2020 season.

David Levine -> RE: 2025 Vikings Free Agency (3/20/2025 11:29:49 AM)

More Moore:

He showcased his athleticism before the draft with a vertical jump of 42.5 inches and times of 4.28 seconds in the 40-yard dash and 6.65 seconds in the 3-cone drill.

From day one, literally, Moore made his presence known at Purdue. In his first game with the Boilermakers, he racked up 313 all-purpose yards and set a new program record. The previous had been set by Otis Armstrong (312) in 1972. That game included a 76-yard rushing touchdown. He was later named the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week.

Moore earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors four times in 2018. By the conclusion of that season, he'd totaled 1,164 yards and 203 rushing yards, in addition to 13 combined touchdowns. He received the Paul Hornung Award, presented to the most versatile player in all of college football.

Moore was named the CBS Sports Freshman of the Year, as well as a First-Team All-American by The Associated Press as an all-purpose back.

Jonathan Allen saw culture and scheme fits in Minnesota
The Pro Bowl defensive tackle talked at length on Wednesday about his choice to join the Vikings

By Matthew Coller

A player with Jonathan Allen’s resume would be expected to have plenty of options when he reaches free agency, particularly at a position that is in massive demand following the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive-line driven Super Bowl victory. Yet Allen didn’t take very long to choose his new home. Just one day after free agency opened, Allen was a Minnesota Viking.

When the two-time Pro Bowler was informed by the Washington Commanders that he was going to be released, he got together with his Minnesota-based agent Blake Baratz and made a list of all the things that he wanted in a new franchise. He was looking for a city (cities) that could embrace him, a place where his family would be part of the community and organization, a team that had good coaching and a legitimate chance to win and a quality culture. The team also had to have the cap space to afford him.

The Vikings checked every box.

During his introductory press conference with the Twin Cities media, Allen went through all the ways in which the Vikings fit his criterial. By far the No. 1 thing he needed was a place for his family.

“I definitely wanted to take my family into consideration,” Allen said. “I would say it was between 20 and 50 percent of my decision. When you look at year in and year out how they are graded [in the NFLPA survey], when your wife and family is able to be included with things in the community, it definitely makes that decision a lot easier.”

The Vikings received A+ scores from players in the anonymous NFLPA survey for the category of family treatment.

They also got A+ score from players for head coach Kevin O’Connell. Back in Washington, Allen was just arriving in the NFL when O’Connell was coaching quarterbacks, so they didn’t get to know each other well but the astute Allen took notice of the culture that O’Connell built in Minnesota en route to a 14-win season in 2024.

“Culture isn’t something you can tangibly touch but you can feel it,” Allen explained. “When something bad happens during the game, you look at the sideline for guys’ reactions. I think it becomes pretty evident of a good culture and a bad culture with how players react during situations in the game…it’s easy to turn one bad play into two or three bad plays and that could be the difference in the game.”

He continued…

“Also, the NFL is hard and nobody wants to come to an environment where nobody is upbeat or excited to do the job. That was one of the biggest reasons why I chose this place.”

Make no mistake, the Vikings’ culture has been assisted greatly by winning football games. One of the biggest reasons for their success in 2024 was the top-five defense that Brian Flores operated. Allen will be coming from a different type of system with Washington head coach Dan Quinn but he sees something on tape from Flores that he likes: Opportunity to win his matchups.

“They refer to him as a mad scientist,” Allen said of Flores. “Some games will be 3-4, bringing pressure pressure off both ends and some games we’re switching it up. Every week being in that playbook is a big key. I really like how he’s able to create space on the inside and allow guys to get one-on-ones and when you get one-on-ones, you gotta be able to win those.”

Allen has won a lot of one-on-ones in his career. Since being selected 17th overall in 2017, he has produced 42.0 sacks and ranked in the top 15 in QB pressures every year between 2020 and 2023, peaking at the 4th best mark in the league with 67 in 2021.

Last year Allen missed a significant chunk of games for the first time since his rookie year. He suffered a pectoral injury in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens. The injury was expected to keep him out for the remainder of the year but he was able to return at the end of the season and play in the postseason.

“When they went in for the surgery, it wasn’t as bad as anybody anticipated or as bad as the MRI showed,” Allen said. “I’d say in 10-12 weeks I was already benching 85% of my maximum force. Once the playoffs came around, I was pretty much healthy. The only thing I had to get back into was football shape…from a health standpoint, it’s a non-issue.”

He certainly got back into football shape in Washington’s most impressive game in many, many years. Against the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Round, Allen created seven QB pressures against Jared Goff and was the highest graded Commanders pass rusher for the game by PFF.

All together, in half of a season’s worth of games in 2024, Allen still finished with 26 pressures and 3.0 sacks, which is on pace to hit his typical marks for his career. It’s also only five fewer pressures than the Vikings’ leading interior rusher from last season Jihad Ward.

The Vikings need Allen’s prowess in the middle. Since Sheldon Richardson’s 2018 season, they have lacked a player that strikes fear into the opposition from a pass rush perspective. Last year the Vikings got very strong run defense out of Harrison Phillips and Jonathan Bullard but didn’t have a defensive tackle who could consistently get into the backfield, especially on early downs.

Allen is already aware of what extra success in the pass rush could mean with two star outside linebackers who were among the league leaders in sacks last season.

“I know we all like to look at sacks but if you can provide interior pressure with guys like Andrew Van Ginkel and JG on the outside, it just makes everybody’s life easier,” Allen said. “Getting the quarterback off his spot, forcing throws to miss high and off target. When you add that element of interior pressure, it helps the defense out tremendously.”

It certainly does. The champion Eagles, if you were wondering, had two top-20 DTs in QB pressures. The Vikings will be trying to recreate that with Allen and Javon Hargrave, who they signed following his release by the 49ers.
