VAIL, Colo. (AP) — American skier Lindsey Vonn says she nearly lost her left leg following a frightening crash in the women’s downhill at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

Vonn revealed in an Instagram post on Monday that her injuries went far beyond the complex tibia fracture in the leg she initially hurt after clipping a gate and sailing off course just 13 seconds into her run on Feb. 8.

The 41-year-old Vonn said the trauma from the crash led to compartment syndrome in her leg. Compartment syndrome involves excessive pressure building up inside a muscle, either from bleeding or swelling. High pressure restricts blood flow and can lead to permanent injury if not treated quickly.

“When you have so much trauma to one area of your body so that there’s too much blood and it gets stuck and it basically crushes everything,” Vonn said.

Vonn credited Dr. Tom Hackett, an orthopedic surgeon who works for Vonn and Team USA, for conducting a fasciotomy to salvage her leg.

“He filleted it open (and) let it breathe, and he saved me,” she said.

Vonn noted that Hackett was only in Cortina because she was competing after tearing the ACL in her left knee shortly before the Olympics.

“If I hadn’t had done that, Tom wouldn’t have been there (and he) wouldn’t have been able to save my leg,” she said.

Vonn, who said she has been discharged from the hospital, also broke her right ankle in the crash.

You want masculinity?

Go get your teeth knocked out while you score the winning goal in overtime in the Men's Olympic Hockey Gold Medal game (with "Freebird" playing), then get drunk in the locker room with the head of the FBI on cheap Mexican beer, while singing all the words to Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue" and then while still drunk the President calls to invite you to the State of the Union address in two days and without pause you say "yes."

THAT is masculinity.

Cash Patel's one redeeming quality is that he is a hockey junkie.

You left out the word "toxic".

“And we have to — I must tell you — we’re going to have to bring the women’s team,” said Trump, who went on to chuckle as the American men burst into laughter in a clip circulating on social media.

-----------------------------------------

Trump has destroyed America. Can you see why I was rooting for Canada in the men's game? The men are cruel, just like their dear cult leader. Proof.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Olympics (2/23/2026 5:12:55 PM)

Alysa Liu’s father was persecuted by the CCP for the Tiananmen Square protests and fled to America

His daughter became a world-class figure skater and refused to skate for the CCP when they tried to recruit her

She just won the gold medal for Team USA.

Lynn G. -> RE: Olympics (2/23/2026 6:34:25 PM)

That may or may not be the true reason. It sounds like the kind of excuse I would make up if I was invited to an event I really didn't want to attend.

But sure, you can once again cover for Trump's misogynistic idiocy.

The US men's team laughing when Trump joked that he'd "have to invite the women's team to the White House too or risk impeachment is textbook sexism.

The misogyny in his words treating women olympians inclusion as a laughable obligation is no surprise from him.

But the failure of those young men to not laugh or push back on behalf of their women peers speaks volumes about a culture that continues to condone inequality and sexism.

Laughing at women who CARRIED the US Olympics in gold and overall medals is loser behavior.

Elitists can't even handle a joke. They were invited also.

Poor Elitists babies need a tissue as they can't even celebrate as they have too much TDS when a normal president call to a winning team bothers them.....boo hoo.

The excuses you make for a sitting President is absolutely pathetic.

I'm trying to think of a word that is even stronger than "pathetic." Maybe "pathological?"

Phil has an excuse for everything Trump does. Its Biden's fault, it's Obama's fault, its Hillary's fault, it's the courts against him, its the media against him...

But if Biden had a shoelace untied - or god forbid - got a name wrong (something Trump does every time he opens his dementia fueled mouth), it was pages and pages of how unfit he was.

But that's MAGA. Remember Obama having the audacity to wear a tan suit?

Lynn G. -> RE: Olympics (2/24/2026 11:03:18 AM)

The tan suit scandal. How can we forget it?

At least he didn't hire Liberace's decorator to decorate the Oval Office.

David Levine -> RE: Olympics (2/24/2026 12:06:42 PM)

Hey USA Men's Hockey Team, Multi-generational hockey fan here. Today was a rough day for women hockey fans. We cheered for you. We celebrated with and for you. We cried watching you with Gadreau's children.

And then you sucked all of the air out of the room. You partied with the man who is protecting pedophiles. You laughed on a phone call with Trump while he disrespected the women's team. You joyfully accepted an invitation to be a distraction at the State of the Union, where there will be sexual assault survivors. Most of whom were children when they were assaulted. Victims that are not getting the justice they deserve, because this administration is protecting their abusers.

The fact that not one of the USA hockey men's players made even a simple statement about supporting the women's team today tells me everything I need to know.

Yep...you have TDS. I could have already told you that.

FYI the Women's Olympic team accepted an invite to party with Flavor Flav in Vegas......

I'd rather have TDS than think misogyny is cool and funny.

David Levine -> RE: Olympics (2/24/2026 7:02:41 PM)

Not every U.S. men’s hockey Olympic champion made the trip to the White House on Tuesday.

According to multiple reports, five Team USA players who helped secure gold against Canada were absent from President Donald Trump’s White House invitation following the historic win.

They are: Kyle Connor, Jake Guentzel, Brock Nelson, Jackson LaCombe and Jake Oettinger.

Guentzel and Nelson were starters, while the others were extras.

Lynn G. -> RE: Olympics (2/25/2026 8:05:47 AM)

I understand that a trip to the White House and being honored in front of the nation is a once-in-a-lifetime moment for anyone. But for me (and it's obvious based on my political stances) attending that kind of an event with THIS president would have felt like a betrayal to my fellow humans. I'd turn it down, and I'd be loud about it.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Olympics (2/25/2026 8:22:25 AM)

US Women Hockey Team is expected to visit the WH; just decided not to attend the State of the Union.
