JBVike -> RE:Culpepper (7/31/2007 1:19:33 AM)

I can't believe I believed in this nut job... From Peter King... I think Daunte Culpepper must have been touched by the sun to have turned down three years and $15 million to play in Jacksonville. Culpepper wants a one-year deal, but what team is going to bring in a guy for one year when there's no way he can learn the offense well enough to start the season and give the team a good read on whether he's the QB of the future? The logical decision for Culpepper should have nothing to do with money right now, only a consideration of where he's the best fit for the future. And that's Jacksonville, because Byron Leftwich is in his last year. The Jags doubt whether Leftwich is the quarterback of the future, and there's no one else on the roster who fits that description. It's the perfect place for Culpepper.

-- Culpepper to Work Out for Raiders -- Tue Jul 31, 2007 AP reports free agent QB Daunte Culpepper will work out for the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday, two weeks after being released by the Miami Dolphins. Culpepper held a private workout for a member of the Raiders' personnel department in Florida on Monday. The 30-year-old quarterback did well enough there to persuade the team to fly him out to California for an additional workout. "Anytime that we have a chance to investigate something that can help our team win, were going to do it," Raiders HC Lane Kiffin said. "Obviously Daunte is something that weve been looking into for a little bit. This is kind of the climax of it, working him out tomorrow." The Raiders have an interest in Culpepper in part due to the holdout of No. 1 overall pick QB JaMarcus Russell. Russell has yet to sign a contract with Oakland, and Kiffin on Sunday indicated negotiations between the two sides had slowed. Kiffin acknowledged that Russell's situation was a precursor to bringing Culpepper in for a workout.

If the raiduhs pick him up he should at least have some semi decent recievers....line blocking is another story

Tim Cady -> RE:Culpepper (7/31/2007 8:53:40 PM)

Duante is nuts if he turned down 3 years 15 mill in Jacksonville, unless there were no escalators for taking over the starting job. i still think he should have went there. Though I can see why he balked, depending on details. The whole thing could have been backloaded team option the works. Say what you will about him representing himself, he has made better deals on his own, then the one that Rob B. fleeced his former agent on. I am surprized that Carolina is not in the mix. The Raiders and Bucs have to be the only teams that would consider Duante for one year. If Duante is ready now only, for them is the caveat. If he is not, then I agree that he has to sign a 2 year minimum contract. I don't see Daunte coexisting with Gruden, unless he now has thicker skin.

Raiders reportedly will sign Culpepper Quarterback could serve as mentor for No. 1 draft pick Russell MSNBC News Services Updated: 1:42 p.m. ET July 31, 2007 OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland Raiders will sign free-agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper, the Oakland Tribune reported Tuesday, citing a source close to the situation. Culpepper was scheduled to work out for the team on Tuesday morning. According to the newspaper, Raiders’ coach Lane Kiffin confirmed on Monday that the team was considering the three-time Pro Bowl selection. On Sunday, Kiffin described contract negotiations between the Raiders and quarterback Jamarcus Russell, the team’s No. 1 draft pick, as “going kind of slow.” “We’re flying (Culpepper) in,” Kiffin told the Tribune. “Any time you have a chance to investigate something that could help our team win, we’re going to do it. Obviously, Daunte is something we’ve been looking into a little bit, and this is the climax of it.” Kiffen added that the term’s inability to reach long-term agreement with the former LSU quarterback is obviously a factor in the decision to bring in Culpepper. “Sure it has to do with that,” he said. “You’ve got to take everything into consideration. You’ve got to protect your team, you’ve got to put your team in the best position to win and make sure you have the right depth and the right competition. So, obviously, that factors into it.” According to reports, Russell wants about $30 million in guaranteed money, which would be the most ever for a rookie. Culpepper’s stint with the Miami Dolphins ended June 17 when he was released following the team’s decision to acquire former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Trent Green via trade. Acquired from the Minnesota Vikings, Culpepper’s first season in South Beach was riddled by injuries, as he was limited to five games due to knee problems suffered while still in the “Twin Cities.” The former Central Florida standout underwent reconstructive surgery on the knee midway through the 2005 campaign.

Zaig -> RE:Culpepper (8/1/2007 2:49:25 AM)

I have always loved Daunte (not in THAT way) but I think it was clear that with a blown knee and a six million dollar bonus coming due we had to let him go. Kudos to the front office for making the right choice. I hope the best for him, as long as he doesn't hurt us, but I really think he's done as a star and will be lucky to have any more real success. The whole thing is kind of pathetic IMO.

Culpepper, Oakland complete 1-year deal as Russell remains unsigned ESPN.com news services Updated: July 31, 2007, 9:11 PM ET * Comment * Email * Print NAPA, Calif. -- Free-agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper signed a one-year contract with Oakland on Tuesday, giving the Raiders a backup plan for top draft pick JaMarcus Russell. Culpepper, 30, worked out in the afternoon before a gathering of Raiders scouts and coaches. The workout was private and Culpepper left without speaking to reporters, but Raiders coach Lane Kiffin announced the signing shortly after the Raiders completed practice. Culpepper, who blew out his knee in 2005 with the Vikings, began 2006 as Miami's starter but had trouble with his mobility and was sacked 21 times in the first four games. The Dolphins shut him down so he could continue rehabilitation and eventually placed him on injured reserve. When they acquired Trent Green in a trade with Kansas City this offseason, Culpepper became expendable. The Dolphins tried unsuccessfully to trade Culpepper a year after acquiring him from Minnesota. When Miami could find no takers, the former Pro Bowl quarterback was released on July 17. Culpepper met with Tampa Bay two days later but did not receive a contract offer from the Bucs. Kiffin has acknowledged that the Raiders wanted Culpepper partially due to the situation with Russell. The No. 1 pick has yet to sign a contract with Oakland and negotiations between the two sides slowed over the weekend.

Culpepper a Raider? Interesting... Does he know that Moss is now with the Pats? ;)

Andy Lowe -> RE:Culpepper (8/1/2007 3:50:39 PM)

Wow, what a shaky decision by Culpepper. The Raiders last year had one of the worst OLs in the history of the NFL. Even if they improve some this year, they're most likely going to be below average. Can't imagine why a guy who's got a tender leg, would want to play for a team, where he's likely going to get mauled!

Tim Cady -> RE:Culpepper (8/1/2007 4:48:35 PM)

Duante has always had confidence in his abilities, although on the field, there have been times where that confidence has been shaken. I will give him credit for getting what he wanted(one contract, chance to start this year). He is rolling the dice that he will play well enough this year to solicit offers from the NFL community next year. I never thought he would get a team to give him a 1 year contract. He did and he got it, so I have to see how this plays out. If he regains his mobility and does well, he won't have to be great to get offers from several teams next year. He will be a much better negotiating position that if he would have taken the contract from Jacksonville. He has already made enough money to make this gamble. Too me it shows he is not resting on his laurels and collecting a check for three years. I like how he handled this whole situation, more power to him. Go Daunte.

Jeff Jesser -> RE:Culpepper (8/1/2007 6:08:50 PM)

You can think of it that way Cads but it also could be a death sentence. Like Andy said, they have a terrible line so he'll be running for his life. Another knock on the knee and it's career over territory. If it were me, I would have preferred some more security. He's taking a big chance.

Zaig -> RE:Culpepper (8/1/2007 7:36:42 PM)

Can you imagine the reception he'll get when Oakland comes to the Dome? :shock:

Dave Odle -> RE:Culpepper (8/2/2007 1:20:28 AM)

I thought I read reports that said Daunte was essentially done for the '07 season because the knee still hadn't fully healed. Is that right or was it just conjecture by some "beat" sports writer in Miami?

The guy turned down 15 million for three years with a decent team in the JAGS and now signs with a team that sports a WEST COAST offense with a POROUS O-LINE. Excellent work by his agent!

-- Culpepper Has a Few Good Throws -- Thu Aug 2, 2007 The Oakland Tribune reports new Raiders QB Daunte Culpepper connected with WR Will Buchanon for a 47-yard touchdown on a well-thrown pass down the left sideline. Buchanon hauled in the long pass as DB Lavonne Rowan looked on. Earlier, Culpepper delivered a 20-yard strike to WR Jerry Porter on a pass over the middle that drew oohs and aahs from teammates, with the force of the ball hitting Porter's pads audible from the sideline.

Davis sees some Plunkett in Culpepper By DAVID WHITE San Francisco Chronicle Thursday, August 02, 2007 Raiders owner Al Davis took one look at Daunte Culpepper, and into the time machine he flew, all the way to 1980 when he said his Oakland team was picked to finish last and Jim Plunkett was in dire need of reclamation. "The only thing I can say about Culpepper right now is he takes me back several years," Davis said Wednesday. "He had great years, just never had a chance. Jim Plunkett never had a chance where he was. That was unfair." Plunkett came off the bench and led the Raiders to a Super Bowl victory that year and won the game's MVP award. What Davis would give for Culpepper to capture a sliver of that comeback success this season, especially in the shadow of the worst four-year stretch in franchise history. Granted, the Raiders are more than one player away from turning around their program. By signing Culpepper to a one-year contract worth $3.2 million, they showed they are willing to try anything at this point -- even if it means bringing in a quarterback who's had two major knee surgeries in less than two years. "Any time you're a great competitor and people doubt you, its absolute fuel to overcome whatever they're saying or shut them up in a sense," Culpepper said. Well, here's his chance and if it works, Davis looks like a genius circa 1980 again. To think, none of this likely would have happened if No. 1 overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell -- often described as a young Culpepper -- was signed and in camp by now. The LSU quarterback is still sitting out, Davis said, because his agents wants all the guaranteed money (up to $30 million) to be an option bonus. The Raiders want nothing to do with that after a recent grievance ruling deemed option bonuses to be nonrefundable in many cases. "I will not do that," Davis said. He will, however, give a one-year deal to a veteran quarterback whose last healthy season was in 2004, when Culpepper threw for 4,717 yards and 39 touchdowns with Randy Moss and the Minnesota Vikings. The Raiders haven't had those sorts of quarterback numbers since Rich Gannon was the league MVP in 2002, and yes, Culpepper also reminds Davis of Gannon. "We've always had a lot of quarterbacks around," Davis said. "In recent years, we stopped that. And then, the minute somebody gets hurt, we've found ourselves in trouble. Daunte was a great talent. Whether he can get it back or not, it's worth the chance." That was the case in 2003 and '04, when Gannon was lost for each season with injuries. Same thing last year, when Aaron Brooks was hurt in the second game and the Raiders offense never got going. Culpepper said all is well with his knee, and that he has no intention to sit behind Russell, Josh McCown or Andrew Walter on the depth chart. He took about five snaps in 11-on-11 drills Wednesday morning, throwing two passes and fumbling a snap exchange. Coach Lane Kiffin said Culpepper would be worked in slowly while he learns the new playbook, and that he eventually will get equal snaps with Walter and McCown. That's called getting a chance, something the Dolphins weren't willing to offer after Culpepper passed a physical in the offseason. They traded for former Chiefs quarterback Trent Green and released Culpepper two weeks ago. That's another Davis reminder of Plunkett, who was discarded by the 49ers before he joined the Raiders. "It's very refreshing to know that I got a chance to come in and play and contribute to a great team," Culpepper said. "Coach Kiffin and his staff are very, very keen on being successful and they let me know that off the top." All this has Davis smiling, ready to relive the past all over again. "Lane made the final decision," Davis said, "but I wanted it to happen. I like to take chances like that." (E-mail David White at dwhite@sfchronicle.com.)

Al Davis is showing signs of dementia. Going back to a previous time in your life and believing you are there is common for dementia patients.
