Now that the foolish premature school girl infatuation of Teague and Curry has faded, I'm curious about what some of you guys think about Meeks at the next level.  Or Terrance Williams, or Maynor, or Vasquez, or even Ellington.
Does McClinton belong in the NBA?  Is he a better prospect than Curry?

David Levine -> RE: College Basketball (3/13/2009 1:37:17 AM)

The boxscore from the Syracuse/UConn game is just crazy

Flynn played 67 minutes. 2 other guys played 61 minutes. Thabeet played for 56 minutes before fouling out.

Both teams had a bench guy play more than 45 minutes.

Both teams had 3 starters and 1 bench guy foul out.

I know it's cliche and overused, but that was a war.  And Flynn was outstanding.  IMO, he's underrated.  He's one of those guys that size doesn't matter.  He's strong, handles the rock and his defense has been improving.  Who wants to get Syracuse in the first round?  BTW, Harris is one of the most versatile defenders in the country.

Guest -> RE: College Basketball (3/13/2009 2:18:49 AM)

Here's a first round NCAA Tournament tip, Marquette is probably the most overrated team in the country.  The "experts" blame their late season woes on the loss of Dominic James, but the real reason they faded is because their schedule was frontloaded with patsies.  They are going to be seeded well and most certainly a favorite, I'll take almost any tournament-worthy team + the points, in the first round.  Are you paying attention, DonT?

I'd mentioned this before on another thread, but does anyone know Teague's draft status?  I see him as a possible stud, but he's not highly ranked on any of the mock drafts.  I know he needs to reduce turnovers, but he's really become a cog in the Wake offense and he's put up some impressive numbers against top competition.

******************************
I think (at least for now) that his defense is a concern and despite shooting lights out beyond the arc, his shot is strange and slow, almost like Shawn Marion.

He didn't get a ton of offers coming out of high school primarily because of his reckless play.  He's improving in that regard but still has a way to go.

He's fun to watch.  I hope he stays in school.

I see where he has now jumped to #14 on the NBADRAFT.net mock draft for 2009.  I think he'll be top 10, and maybe even top 5 by the end of the season.

******************************
Bumped, and waiting for a response.

Jerrells with a nice game for Baylor.  I have a hard time believing he won't be drafted in the first round.

Just curious if your thoughts have changed on this one too.

djskillz -> RE: College Basketball (3/13/2009 8:36:42 AM)

Hey Pete,

Yep, what a killer game.  I actually think the Duke/Kentucky game still has to be at least in the very top.  32 lead-changes I believe, plus that killer ending in OT.  But ya, damn impressive.

On Meeks, I just don't know.  He's a good scorer, but I'm not sure if it will translate or not at the next level.  The jury's out to me.

As for Flynn, I'll admit that I haven't seen nearly enough of Syracuse this year, but I was also very, very impressed.  Kind of reminds me in some ways (mainly athleticism) of Steve Francis in college, which isn't a bad thing by any means.  He was still an energizer bunny even after the game last night.  Harris was pretty impressive too with how quick his feet were.  But he needs to work on finishing.

Lastly, re: conf. tournaments/rest, I have the same debate constantly.  Take UConn from last night.  Obviously if they were going to lose they probably wanted to lose in regulation.  I personally lean towards the "rest" argument, especially if the road to the tourney title is rough, ie back to back to back games.  But it also depends on what seed you're fighting for, because that it obviously important.  If you're UConn, you ideally don't want to be shipped out West, for instance.

Jim Frenette -> RE: College Basketball (3/13/2009 9:41:13 AM)

With UConn and Pitt losing should make Louisville's chances of winning the Tournament much easier.

So could we still see 3 teams from the same conference get #1 seeds?

Or with those loses it opens the door for Michigan St to grab a #1?

Elliot -> RE: College Basketball (3/13/2009 10:04:39 AM)

Not sure what response you expect from me regarding Teague.  I still think he'll be a lottery pick and likely a top 10.  Jerrells has dropped a bit and the depth of PG in the upcoming draft doesn't help him.

Some really good games tonight.  Jack Mac taught Teague something about shooting.  He is the best perimeter shooter in the country, without doubt.

Booker was doing a prety good Dominique impersonation on the Blue Devils, he put Zoubek and Singler on the same poster.  Things have really tightened up in the ACC.

Oklahoma finished strong and had to come back against A&M.
Texas really needs this game against Missouri, and they might not get it.  Looks like Pittman dropped the Jenny Craig diet too.

Nova held off a fierce comeback by Providence.  Good win for them.  Cunningham is definitely not at full strength.

UCLA is killin' USC.

No comment on the MN/MSU game.

Teague did ok from inside the arc and at the line.  He was penetrating which is what allowed Wake to hold off a solid Clemson team earlier this year.  But beyond that, he was bad.  What's more telling to me is his assists line.  Not just last night, but in general it's been dropping.  He's never really been a pass-first guard, but his assist numbers have been on the decline.  At least he's not been a turnover machine.

***********************************
Have you cooled a bit on your incredible projection of where he'll be drafted?

Teague is not a NBA impact player.  Take him in the first round and the rest of the league will laugh.

Some people catch a game or two, or see the highlights and hop on the rising star.  His star is falling, as it should, especially in terms of future NBA success.  Three weeks ago some talking heads were talking about him being the best player in the country.  He's not even the best player on his team.

You haven't actually said it, but it's pretty easy to infer that you think Meeks will be drafted before Teague.  Is that your position?

David Levine -> RE: College Basketball (3/14/2009 1:25:07 AM)

Flynn only played 45 minutes tonight - after 67 last night.

Kid has played 112 out of a possible 115 minutes over the past 2 days. Incredible.

If I had to pick it right now, I think I'd go with

East - #1 Louisville, #2 Duke
South - #1 North Carolina, #2 Pittsburgh
Midwest - #1 Michigan State, #2 Connecticut
West - #1 Memphis, #2 Oklahoma

But there's still a lot of basketball to be played.

The most important story, of course, is North Dakota State going to the NCAA Tournament in their first season of being eligible to go.  [8D]

Steve Lentz -> RE: College Basketball (3/14/2009 2:49:42 PM)

The Memphis senior class now has more wins over a 4 year period than any team in history. One of the absolute best teams that few are talking about.

djskillz -> RE: College Basketball (3/14/2009 2:58:42 PM)

Well, that has a lot to do with schedule, Steve, but overall I do agree.  Memphis has been underrated (especially last year) for 2-3 years now.

TheGonz -> RE: College Basketball (3/14/2009 3:22:57 PM)

So, naturally, after I declare that Michigan State and North Carolina should both be #1 seeds, they go out and lose in the semi-finals of their respective conference tournaments this afternoon.  Michigan State lost to Ohio State 82-70, and the Tarheels were dropped by Florida State 73-70.

So, yeah, I honestly don't know for sure what they're going to do now.

djskillz -> RE: College Basketball (3/14/2009 3:37:23 PM)

I don't think Michigan State is very good.  In fact, the whole Big10 really sucks right now IMO.  Though I think it's moving in the right direction and will be much better in a year or two.

I wouldn't say the conference sucks, but rather they're all almost equally mediocre.

Unfortunately, the conference is going to be well represented in the tournament, but they don't deserve it.  I'd be surprised to see more than one Big 10 team reach the Sweet 16.

I have no idea where they will actually be drafted, every year teams make huge mistakes.  I said earlier in the season that Meeks could be a late first rounder.  I like his strength and defense and that will translate well, IMO.

My point on Teague is that he's just not going to be very good at the next level.  Of course that may not prevent some stupid team (hopefully not the Wolves) from drafting him prematurely.

Personally, there are at least 12 guards (providing some of the underclassmen come out) that I believe will be better in the NBA than Teague.

Also, he really still doesn't have a position in the NBA.

Agreed on all 3 points, Pete, especially the Big10.

The Cuse/Cards game is going to be fun tonight.

I think the Orange finally ran out of steam.  It was a fun tournament to watch.

Your boys have their hands full tomorrow with Toney Douglas.

USC may have knocked Arizona out by beating AZ State, you think?
I don't think anybody is going to be too happy having to play USC in the first round.

I think MS State has a real good chance at winning tomorrow too.  If so, maybe that will eliminate another Big 10 team that doesn't belong.

Guest -> RE: College Basketball (3/14/2009 10:32:05 PM)

Re: the Big 10, normally you figure Izzo to get his guys to overacheive but they simply suck offensively especially from the perimeter.  Wisconsin doesn't belong in the tournament.  Ohio State could possibly make a run, they have good size and Turner can take over at times.  Purdue is probably the most solid of the bunch.  I wouldn't be surprised to see Michigan State get upset in the first round.

Guest -> RE: College Basketball (3/15/2009 2:35:53 AM)

As of tonight, Lunardi doesn't even have Oklahoma in his top eight.  Oklahoma deserves a #2 without question.

Ian Joseph -> RE: College Basketball (3/15/2009 1:08:30 PM)

2009 Bracket Challenge is set up and ready to go.

djskillz -> RE: College Basketball (3/15/2009 5:54:31 PM)

Well, nothing's changed my opinion that Pitt is my pick to win it all this year.

I actually kind of like Washington to beat UConn as well.
