Very funny answers everyone.

I'm not interested in the after-it's-ripped-open paper (although on Christmas that will matter again). Right now, as I'm wrapping, I have bits and pieces that are the cutaways and I have been putting them in recycling. But I don't want to muck up the system if the paper isn't recyclable. I'm conscientious that way. [:D]

Good for you Lynn.

The most marketable recyclables are Alum cans, Tin Cans, OCC(old corrogated cardboard), #8 News(newspapers w/inserts) then what is know as #6 new residential mix. This is where your wrapping paper comes into play. We also add magazines to this category, because the price is the same so there is not incentive to bale them separately. #6 can have no more than 15% contaminents(box board-cereal boxes, cake boxes, beer cases) so with that already a problem, as people think these items are desirable recyclables(they are not), it muddys the mix. Now in the metro, with a larger population base, they might be recycling the boxboard. The wrap though is pretty much a worthless product.[;)]

Hey - I should have asked you in the first place. It's good to have a professional in the business who knows the correct answer.

So basically the answer is that I may as well throw those in the garbage.

I learned something else though. I've always assumed boxes like cereal boxes and six pack cases, etc. were desirable recyclables.

I feel guilty that my family has cut back and we drink almost no pop - so we don't contribute much in the aluminum can recycle bins. [:D]

I was searching sites and saw the question[8D]

We don't drink pop (death in a can) much anymore either.  My daughter never did, my wife rarely and finally my son and I jumped on board. We have pop in the pantry that we bought last summer.

Prices are really bad on all recyclables. When prices are high for #8 news, recyclers start taking the box board with the #6 news because then they will mess with. When #8 news is low, they don't have to mess with box, they can use the better product to make it with. Box board is the last of the line of the paper food chain. The fibers are incredibly short and to recycle it is a muddy process, that most do want to deal with for the maintenance issues it causes with equipment.

Interesting stuff. How about those plastic bags that we get at the grocery store? Our store has a big bin out front and will take those bags (and other plastic bags) for recycling. For a while they stopped doing it because I read that it was no longer profitable to do so, but they reinstated it last year and the bins are back out front. I'm glad because I don't get many of THOSE plastic bags, but we get plastic bags in so many other instances (wrapped around the newspaper, retail stores, etc.) and I feel guilty throwing them away. I keep a large bag in the garage and stuff all of those plastic bags inside until full - then bring my "bag of bags" to the grocery store for recycling.

We can't do anything with them. I know our big chain grocery has had the bag bin of and on. It is not profitable. Plastic is the worst product for recycling, because it is so light you can usually never ever get your transportation paid for.

You can buy permanent plastic bags at places like Whole Foods that are made from recycled plastic bags.  Those are kinda cool. 


Nice one on the udders joke too [&:]

It's also becoming more popular to bring one's own reusable canvas bags to grocery stores. I actually have a couple but haven't gotten quite to the point where I remember to bring them. [:-]

I use my for sorting paperwork at home or as beach bags in the summer.

That's exactly like the ones we bought.  They look like canvas but they are made from 100% recycled plastic bags.  Pretty cool actually.

It isn't that much more expensive out there they it is here. Some areas in buying houses, maybe, but there are very expensive areas here in Minnesota also.

I sold my house out there for $115,000 and bought a Townhouse here for $125,000. About the same size without real property and have to be more considerate of neighbors

Somewhere warm always sounds good this time of year.  Seriously though, we just start a downsizing process that is starting to scare me.  Ugh
