KEEP KIDS PLAYING the game they love. Adam Carlson, twice cut during tryouts in Edina, has just signed with the Washington Capitals organization and is leaving Mercyhurst College after one season. Twice cut from hockey tryouts at Edina High School, goaltender Adam Carlson overcame those setbacks and now is under contract with the NHL's Washington Capitals. Carlson, who just finished his first season of Division I play with Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa., signed a two-year tryout deal Monday with the team and reports immediately to the Capitals' top minor league team, the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. Carlson's two-way agreement means he's paid based on what level he plays while in the Capitals organization. His deal mirrors the one signed earlier this week by Wayzata's Mario Lucia with the Minnesota Wild, which chose the Notre Dame forward in the second round of the 2011 NHL Draft. Carlson posted a 7-7-3 record for Mercyhurst, with a 2.85 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage. Immediately before college, the 6-foot-3 netminder spent two junior hockey seasons with the Coulee Region Chill of the North American Hockey League and a year before that with two teams in lower junior leagues. While with the Chill in the La Crosse, Wis., area, he registered a 38-27-10 record with seven shutouts, a 2.52 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage in 81 games, good enough to catch the attention of the Mercyhurst coaching staff. As a sophomore at Edina, Carlson failed to land a spot on the junior varsity roster. He skipped tryouts as a junior and was cut again as a senior. During his last year in high school, he played on Edina's Junior Gold A youth team, helping the squad win a state title. That roster is primarily for seniors who don't make the varsity team.
